The MS Surface is a quality device, I had a play with a staff members RT tablet the other day, it feels decent enough and polished using it, though the lack of outlook and domain connectivity is a killer for that particular one, not a fan of the touch cover either. I always thought that a MS Surface pro in work would make for an excellent mobile admin station when we go full wireless, but price is a massive factor its just too high comparative to Apple/Android based stuff, though it definitely is a high end product I think.

Ideally yeah I would play games in 1920x1080, high levels of detail isnt a massive thing for me, seeing as I have always turned off junk like sunshafts/shadows and water textures in WoW, just isnt worth the FPS drop. Samsung 840 looks like a winner straight off the bat too think ill be ordering me one at the end of month all going well.

At the moment I have a fairly old Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2 board that came bundled with 4gb of ram and an AMD Phenom 6 core CPU when I was skint and unemployed, my previous motherboard having actually caught on fire (I wondered why my monitor went black and the case started glowing orange on the ASUS board I had before it to look in the window and find that a capacitor actually had a flame on top of it ) As soon as I started work I upped that to 8gb of RAM, 1TB hard disk drive and a decent 500W psu (that heats the room ), I want ideally to eek out another couple of years before upgrading the CPU/Mobo on the device, the wife wont go barmy if I do any upgrades in pieces, I bought a nice Benq 24" HDMI monitor last year as a present from me to me I basically use it for work i.e. RDPing in and office and a bit of Gaming (Generally its WoW I play the most, I have noticed that the GTS450 seems to be struggling a bit now, I am getting a lot of white spotting on it when in game, with quite low settings)

noise might be an issue there then I should add, PC is in bedroom at the moment and was unbearable when I had the stock cooler on my CPU, I think I might fancy going AMD for the cards now as this nvidia hasnt been all that impressive

Hello all, I am thinking of a rebuild here for my home PC, have 2x1tb drives mirroring at the moment but want to improve the OS speed to eek a few more years out of it, ideally I want to be able to stick the OS and possibly wow on it, so I am looking for at least an 80gb drive to be comfortable as a minimum I think. I havent bothered with SSD drives at all to date, so havent got a clue what makes for a decent drive other than looking at "Fast" read and write speeds. Also I am looking to replace my Geforce GTS450 in the next few months as its starting to "White spot" a bit now in game, ideally I want a card around the £120-150 range, what would be decent now? (Used to avidly read custompc, but give it up as it was like paying for advertising) Thanks, Rich

I was pointed to the DSE online training that is offered by our county, Its worth doing I think, I am in compliance for a lot of it already, though I was glad to know about the height of the monitors in relation to eyes and neck straing and the free eye test offer is also something worthwhile I discovered. Though I think at some point in the future I will be pursuing a decent gel wrist rest set (I have 2 gel kensington ones I use at home, being very weary of RSI as a friend has a major issue with that who's only a few years older than me) and I have also looked for proper dual monitor stands as well, but balked at the ridiculous prices places have been charging (I have a shelf at the moment above a corner facing desk, personally for me I would rather be straight on to the work station and square to the wall with it all as the two monitors are a bit far away compared to what I would like it to be like, though that is personal opinion more than anything there).

I'll dig out what I used and send it over, it's very simple :-)

Surely that stuff could just be turned off ? Understand the virus bit though, thats a worry ill wager and I cant see it being trusted to "Ze Cloud"

Hello everyone, I had an old version of this which I cannot find now to reinstall, I have tried its new upgrade NTM and finding that this just does not cut the mustard the way that LanSurveyor used too. Can someone recommend me an alternative program ? I basically want to see whats plugged in what switch and where here prior to VLanning everything off and want to clearly identify what plugs in where on our masses of cables so its all mapped going forward. The free one included with spiceworks doesnt do much either that I can see. Thanks, Richard

well from what I gather, we have a load of archaic Acer TravelMate laptops in a caddy here, (windows ME based stuff) which were supposed to be on bromcom, the previous tech had one of those old grey touchscreen/slate PCs running XP, wasnt a light device though at all.

Is there anyone out there able to help with this, we basically are looking at going to Outlook Client for majority of our staff with Mandatory Profiles and are looking at Signatures and their redirection I want to script the following command :- mklink /d C:\users\{username}\appdata\roaming\microsoft\signatures U:\My Settings\Signatures Can it be done ? I am not sure of the Username variable, also whats best i.e. VBS/Powershell or a straight .cmd file ? Any help is appreciated here, thanks, Rich

I have an iPhone 4S here that I never insured and I think that made me be a bit more careful with it, though it is quite a robust telephone as well to be fair. Wife has a 5S uninsured and its giving me nightmares as our son has a new toy now in his eyes. Though when she renewed to it with EE recently, the sales woman openly said their insurance was not worth paying, they wanted something daft like £15 a month to insure the phone.

I think Big Bang Theory is starting to struggle a bit at the moment, this seasons been a bit poor, 2 and a half men isnt bad with Ashton, they just about pulled it off I think there with him, there wasnt a Vacuum with Sheen and Cryer is good having stepped up more. I am a family guy/american dad/South Park fan, that stuff has gotten funnier as its gone on I think, its similar to the simpsons, the early stuff looks and is quite poor compared to the modern day stuff, though they can all still have bad episodes. Hannibal has been awesome as well, bit grim in places, but quality writing throughout there and Mads Mikkelsen is a superb choice for hannibal. I know its not going to get binned, but Game of Thrones has been poor so far and feels a bit rushed compared to the books I think at the moment.

started collecting sets already of this stuff for my boy, (hes only 1 atm) as the price just seems to be getting higher and higher for the little plastic lumps ! I can remember my sister having a bucket full of this stuff as a child, which cost my parents £16 then, nowadays that would be about £70 for the amount she had.

Our LEA provide it to us here, we shifted from Symantec when I first started to Kaspersky 6 then, recently upgrading to V10 of Kaspersky, was going ok until the upgrade, seem to be minor issues with nag tabs now and such which we cannot turn off and are dealing with, its not a bad product, infinitely better than Symantec and I like things like USB scanning now working properly.

I am surprised it got to 2 series after watching the first one. Much better stuff have been cancelled than that ! Brimstone was one I remember a good few years back that had one series !

Hello all, I am currently looking at our iPads and wondering if I can fully automate everything or do I have to fiddle about with each ipad a bit, Our setup here, is that we have an iMac for it and 10 ipads with a griffin multidock, Everything has connected and configured fine as far as I can see so far and i've been through a few , I have been using Apple Configurator and have the devices setup to be supervised and I have set a profile up to lock them down having worked through the ipads, the Syncing and adding of apps the machines has been done with a central account that we have, we are only using free apps at the moment and everything seems to have gone out to the ipads fine, even adding in apps and syncing everything through configurator has gone fine, but I have noticed that it leaves things "Half Configured". When I have pushed everything through to them doing this, I notice that I manually have to setup a lot of other stuff, there are no restrictions in place and I have to manually do the remainder of configuration for things not in the configurator app, is this right or am I missing a trick ? I own a chromebook nowadays, ironically as well, after asking advice on here and other forums and having major misgivings about HP in the past, I plumped for a white HP one! Shock Horror ! From my experience of it, I think their not bad, I would even say its "Good" here but there are a few "Buts" as already pointed out, RAM is a massive issue, 2gb isnt great at all, every bit of research I did reported back that they slowed down on 2gb so I wanted to avoid that, 4gb is generally the acceptable minimum amount of RAM these days, thats what drove me to HP as it is the only 4gb model in the UK , UK lines and availability are very poor too compared to US in Retail, they dont offer the 4gb variants with the models that you get in the US. Have to agree with @localzuk too, resolution is an issue too, I had a 9 year old Sony Vaio laptop in work until it died a few months back, I mourned it as, this thing was made in 2005 was top of the line and had a 1920x1200 resolution, you think that manufacturers would have cottoned on and caught up with that at least now as a standard, 1366x768 isnt good and I spend a good whack of my time pushing tabs to the Lounge TV here to get a decent size with the chromecast, the alternative resolution available on mine which is higher, looks horrible with the screen as well which doesnt help. I have a Celeron based unit and thats strangely not offputting on this model, as it doesnt behave like previous celerons i.e. awful, I wouldnt know about ARM based ones though here, thats something I would avoid on a personal choice basis
