Fair play Miscbrah's post had me in tears of laughter yesterday when I was reading this thread. I read that post at beginning of thread and it was spot on in fairness, I came off facebook over a year ago now (not long after my son was born and my sister passed away), it was a good decision I think as I wasn't happy with that site at all, it was very spammy and you tire of the fair whack of passive aggressive "look at me" posts. I disliked intently the fact that people in my friends list were posting some stupidly gruesome images that I had no choice up front of seeing, I also got fed up seeing intelligent people posting stupid internet rumours on there all the time, to the point where I was linking snopes mythbusting links on a near daily basis or asking them to link in their facts on the rumours they were spreading. I have spells where I cant tolerate Social Networking it seems, though I am now back on Google+(everything a social network should be, posts of interest and very very minimal spam), Twitter and Linkedin again

from what I have seen a certain MFD manufacturer here its more frustrating seeing them add a notch or slightly altered plate to a toner to stop essentially the same toner working in the newer model. I am glad we don't pay for their toners and have it as part of our contract, as we have about 20 toners/imaging units for a couple of long gone MFDs here now.

The Intel Power Manager feature of spiceworks also does this for us with its schedules off the OU, works well too for us.

ours are all sub 1p per page in terms of costs and similar to the costs shown at the beginning of the threads, we have ours on a mix of LEA and non-LEA KonicaMinolta MFD printers here (We are going over to the LEAs contract as they can get low low prices again to what we have agreed in the past slowly, as not all ours renew at the same time) Check with your LEA if possible, theres a specific framework that a lot of these copier companies should use if dealing with you on education and those costs are quite scandalous. Thats our costs in terms of what we pay to the companies for the leasing, we charge higher internally for our billing, Its 2p per colour 10 per bw A4 here with a 1.5 multiplier for duplex and double for A3 printing

I started looking at Onenote also a while back, it seems to be excellent, even working well with online sharing from what I can see from Onedrive.

I cant see anyone wanting to nick my 10 year old Vectra either, I have used a few of them around the town here, always an excellent job on the car to be fair

Spiceworks here too, good on inventory side of things as well, I log all my jobs on the desk as a means of keeping on top of the workload, recently though its starting to update itself faster and more frequently than Adobe Flash Player, which I didn't think possible

I get tons of the WoW spams all the time, thank the lord for Authenticator Apps and two step auths on anything major in my online life ! I had a chat with a colleague earlier about this and I still cannot believe that in this day and age people fall for some scams though where they give people stuff like pin numbers over the telephone though, email scams are a bit more fraught, because to the average joe nowadays and the use of HTML in emails, everything "looks official" even though its not, sometimes plain text was a lot better I think for spotting scams.

I was doing it via CIFS when I tried, I dont believe the boxes we have come with iSCSI, else I would have had no qualms attaching one to the backup server. I will try it again tomorrow when I am in the office and copy up what Veeam threw up at me when I tried it out initially. I tried their "Backup" tool, but it throws a wobbly a bit and quits out from what I saw on the logs, it doesnt like all the massively long welsh words we have on our filenames I think.

Hello Fellow eduGeeks, i have a situation now where I am using a seperate server on our site to do the bulk of the backup work with our virtualisation cluster, Veeam is running well and doing the automated backup, we have 2 NAS boxes on our site, both of them are Buffalo Linkstation QXL's we have an 8 TB one and a 12 TB one, at the moment, I have the Veeam server backing up our VMs to itself as a repository (I could not do the ideal thing I wanted, which was to specify the NAS boxes as the repositories, when backing up to them, it seemed to throw a wobbly and say that the device was closing the connection when trying to do the mass copy of the Veeam files to the NAS) What I am doing now, is backing up to the backup server and using windows server backup then to get the relevant directories sent to the first NAS box, I cannot select a second destination or create a second backup job to run on this server, but ideally to be safe I would like to get them backing up to both NAS boxes at relevant parts of the site (we want to spread out the second nas on site outside of our server room to not have an "all eggs in one basket" scenario with data recovery). The built in replication seems to be failing too, when I set it up to do that, it basically failed to run using the inbuilt software, so I want to know if anyone has suggestions on how to automate the data replication on these two devices. Indian every time for me, I love the spice, I ask for a "Hot Jalfrezi" or a Chicken Pathia in most places as I like some veg with the meat, rather than just the sauce and chicken affair that is Vindaloo or Madras, also like a Goan Chicken after my mother recommended it.

Kaspersky at work, used to be Symantec when I first started, not a bad product, little bit clunky though I think in places. I use Bitdefender at home too on all machines, excellent bit of software

Thats a bug bear of mine, we only have a small amount on our site and I have been using apple configurator lately getting to grips with it all(waiting to have LEA finish off our wireless installation), their not massively hard to configure from what I have seen, though can be very fiddly, I dislike the fact that you cannot get them "completely" finished using it and it requires 5 minutes of setting a passcode and other tweaks to finish them off after the apps, (unless anyone knows how to completely do that process, we have an imac for their configuration here, not a server) I have only used free apps here so far, VPP was a bit of a nightmare when I was looking at setting it up, but I will probably revisit that shortly when I get a bit of R+D time towards the summer.

My grandad was stopped driving by his insurance company refusing to cover him with his motability car, my family breathed a huge sigh of relief as he was intent on staying on the road and would not listen or entertain giving up driving despite being 77 at the time, with poor reflexes, attention and awareness, he was politely refused a renewal because of minor accidents where he's pranged the car and not damaged anyone else thankfully, being egged on to keep driving by my grandmother unbelievably, it's been hard on them to give up that freedom though since then Something like this would be good for them if it ever took off nationwide, though I do think a comment I read about it on another website, you will have probs in urban areas with people thinking its funny to jump out in front of these vehicles and slow the journey to a crawl essentially.

I had a horrible placement in EDS during college over 10 years ago where I was mismatched with what I was interested in pursuing, I slept with my eyes open for a lot of it, I got sent all around the building largely because the woman supervising me was out for 5 days of the 10 on courses, though it was primarily programming based the placement when I was interested in hardware/systems management, I was primarily based in their "Database Management" section for the duration, which consisted of making edits via tickets to a massive Xerox database on a unix mainframe that their engineers used at the time, screenshot a unix screen, print, edit the database entry that was screenshotted, then screenshot the completed changes and print - some people did that for the entirety of their day remarkably. Getting shown the DVLA stuff they were programming was pretty cool at the time though, no matter how laughable it was internally with them that they were over budget and deadline with everything just over half finished when I was there. I spent a single day out of the fortnight, with their helpdesk team which was quite excellent, the people were all very nice and took time to explain their various roles out and show me everything, but as I wasn't interested in programming/software development at the time, everything else was a bit of a loss for me in that placement, though I did make my lecturers laugh when the placement diary had down on it a "Coffee Count" showing how many coffees I managed to drink each day to get me through the days, probably the longest fortnight in a "job" of my life, was like time stood still in places. That being said, I had a pupil on work experience last year and it was a bit daunting at first because of that past experience and I realise that generally I am a pretty solitary person, which goes well with the world of IT I think at times, I resolved to show him everything possible and get him to see what normal day to day operations were like for my job, I probably overwhelmed him a bit for the first day or two, as I resolved to talk through pretty much everything we did and gave the "grand tour" of our IT systems. I at least want to think he was engaged though and hopefully enjoyed it too, I didnt send him off on the "Bad/Carrying jobs" and I made sure I helped out whenever anything like carrying/cleaning out PCs was involved, he knew his way around a PC having built a couple himself and running a server in his home, so it was good that I was able to let him work with minimal supervision on things like PC repairs in offices or classrooms and it worked out good from our point of view as well I felt, because he did bring up some things which we looked at while on the job and he pointed out a couple of policies that were not working properly which we worked through and remedied, though that probably didn't make him all that popular with his peers when some stuff got tightened up It does depend on the person though, if their interested in the field, I think that makes it infinitely easier on everyone, rather than someone being on a "Generalised" placement who may not have much of an interest in the field.

Intel in work for me, AMD at home though, generally AMD suit people on a tigher budget and their stuff is pretty decent overall, I have never been one to worry about things like FPS beyond it being playable, though some friends live for being "bleeding edge" though to me its too much buying and upgrading constantly. All other fancy junk like water textures, lightshafts and effects gets turned off here anyway
