Agree that it will be a name resolution thing. I can't remember the details as it's about 6 years since I last played with the Novell client - but there's something about the search order between Novell's name service, DNS, netbios and something else.

Hello, I'm currently studying for an MSc in technology management with the OU, and (thankfully) I'm approaching the end with the final dissertation. The title of the project is "Bring Your Own Device policy: What to include from a Technology Management perspective." As I'm sure you all know, BYOD is a growing trend (especially in the last 3-4 years) in ICT provision in businesses and educational establishments across the world. With BYOD, organisations are recognising that personal/consumer devices are increasingly prevalent and sophisticated. Some management of this is necessary to control risks to the organisation, and this is often done with a 'BYOD policy'. I'm currently preparing a survey to collect opinions from both IT professionals and end-users about what should be contained in a BYOD policy. Would it be OK to post a link here when I'm ready? I'd really value the opinions of Edugeek peeps. If anyone's interested in the topic, or has some wisdom they'd like to share outside the survey, that's fine with me! Thanks

Hello, I've just been asked my opinion of some software our lab technicians were thinking of getting. I won't post a link because I think it's rubbish (MS access based with dodgy looking support). Does anyone know what software is generally in use to inventory science equipment and chemicals? I suspect most people use spreadsheets... Thanks, Ian

Since getting iPads (and before them iPod touches) our digital cameras haven't been touched. They are literally gathering dust. If there's any possibility of a tablet project in your organisation then you might want to hold off until that is sorted.

That's the path I've followed today. It is possible to keep iOS6 but configurator will keep trying to upgrade it. There is no way to go back to iOS6 once iOS7 has been installed on a device. Not even a restore from backup.

I got something similar this morning after an OS X update. It looks like we're going to have to update Configurator at least, if not iOS.

Thankfully not installing automatically, just downloading hundreds of Mb and then prompting for the install. We'll tell people to not install just yet, but there doesn't seem to be anyway of stopping the download. It apparently happens if the wifi is switched on and it is left on charge,

So all our 80 of our iPads decided to download the iOS7 image completely unprompted, hammering the network connection in the process. Any ideas how we could turn this 'feature' off? I'm sure previous versions asked before download, and again before install.

Sorry. I'm very tired today and that was a snarky reply. I think what I meant was that it's good to deal with suppliers who treat you with a bit of respect, value your time and you can trust to get the detail of technical orders correct.

I prefer to deal with suppliers who know how to use capital letters.

It's your network - do what you like. We also do dynamic VLAN stuff, but each of our iPads has it's own AD account, allowing us to trace abuse/oddness quite quickly. We've chosen to push all iPads onto the same VLAN and subnet (/24 I think) as it makes multicast stuff like Bonjour for printing and Airplay to Apple TV much simpler. It rather depends on what sort of numbers you need. At the moment we have less than 100 iPads so it's not a problem.

No decision yet. Funny how many cold calls I've had since this thread started though...

Thanks for the feedback folks. Looks like a mixed bag, but at least with MPS it's not really my problem! I'm still waiting for other vendors to get back to me, so I haven't fully decided. I've always dealt with HP before (with equally mixed experiences).
