  1. Not so - MS have said they'll take IE8 out of W7 for the EU - Opera are still up in arms (hence the brilliant Boycott Opera campaign being run!) as they realise that people STILL won't use their browser, and that the only way anyone ever will, is to get MS to bundle Opera with Windows in some way... Pot? Kettle? Black? Also don't see Apple being gone after for all the bundling they do, but, O wait, Apple are the darling of the media and the masses, so that's OK. Now people whine that MS don't bundle Windows with anti-virus/malware?! Cake & eat it.
  2. BBC NEWS | Technology | Microsoft offers free anti-virus Love the 3rd paragraph - "The software giant has been criticised in the past for failing to include free security software with Windows." Umm... think they get critisied for including necessary software in their OS actually... like browsers! Can't have it both ways!
  3. We had the same thing - Apparently it a "courier issue" with them being backside-retentive... a call to the helpline and they get them out again the next day to collect the remaining bags.
  4. Scary... each to their own I suppose! We have a similar problem here, leaves nothing to the imagination.
  5. They seem to go through their NMs rather quickly there... shame as it is quite a nice school.
  6. Well I'm a hard man to please with gadgets and I'm impressed. Sounds like she's not putting the keypad lock on, though to be fair, did take me a bit to work out how to engage it! Not sure on formats off the top of my head, but haven't had to convert anything... yet!
  7. @ Mac - Worth looking at The Missing Sync for Mobile Smartphones to Mac OS X and Windows
  8. iTunes will only work with Apple products (or the Palm Pre until Apple fix that loophole!), WMP will sync the HTC Touch HD though. Fairly easy switching, took me all of 20 minutes to rip all my music off my iPod, get it organised properly, and uploaded to the TouchHD.
  9. Mandatory roaming profiles for students is a good idea, yes. Most certainly not normal roaming profiles though - would create a few issues!
  10. Exchange, Software VPN, MIS, Moodle(pending). We publish instructions for people on how to install our own CA cert into their browsers.
  11. Orange (PAC'd number over from O2 as O2 refuse to stock phones better than the iPhone so as not to upset Apple). Seems Orange have gotten rid of it from their website though, can still get it from CPW ( HTC Touch HD on Dolphin, £35, 600 minutes, unlimited txt, 18 months - The Carphone Warehouse ), though they're charging about £98 for the phone now, should think you can haggle them down though. Still cheaper than an iPhone!
  12. We're in the process of the ICT Mark here - nothing about needing roaming profiles. ICT Mark is about how ICT is used to enhanced teaching & learning. The resources merely need to provide the means to deliver those enhancements. Personalised desktops most certainly do not come into it!
  13. iPhone Killers - Chapter 5: iPhone vs. HTC Touch HD | Mobile Phone News
  14. Got it free on £35. Comes with 8GB MicroSD, will take a 16GB card. Gives more freedom than built in, non expandable, storage.
  15. There is only one answer - HTC Touch HD. 'tis the phone of the Gods. You just have to look at the iPhone specs to see it's just designed to keep fanboys happy. Touch HD has glorious screen (bigger than iPhone), Google Maps, Push e-mail, 5MP camera, basically everything you could want in a phone. http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchhd/overview.html Another site gives a good review between the two, just can't find it at the moment.
  16. iPhone is wayyyyyy overrated, save your money. Go for a HTC - I love my TouchHD personally, but quite expensive without a contract. Go for the Touch Pro2 or Diamond2. Samsung Omnia HD is good to.
  17. You need to replace the default.html (or index.html) with a one to redirect the site.
  18. Pretty sure the answer to 2 is a Yes, they do. You will definately need to check this with a licensing expert though.
  19. Pretty sure you can't, and Capita won't support it even if you can. SIMS, Sharepoint, ADP, SQL DBs for SIMS, Sharepoint, ADP, all on one box?! You shouldn't even really have both the SharePoint DB and website on the same server, let alone all on one with SIMS! If the SLT want to go down the SIMS route, then they need to provide the funding for the necessary hardware.
  20. My condolences I'll miss stories of him on here, always did brighten up an otherwise dull day. Requiescat In Pace
  21. Doesn't help - but HTC Touch HD syncs fine with Outlook 2007/WMDC/Windows 7 RC
  22. Doesn't look like it's turned up on YT yet... but sure it will! There was no official WWDC stream, never is, but one guy managed to get away with doing a secret uStream of it for the whole 2 hours, same stream was also rebroadcast on TWiT Live.
  23. 256 RAM, doubled from 3G. No clue on graphics front, but it's pretty darn impressive (and I'm the anti-Apple-fan-boy) - Apple - iPhone - Technical Specifications for general specs. Problem is - Apple could release the iBrick, and people would buy it in droves. Does the iPhone do some things brilliantly? Yes. But come on, UPGRADED to 3mp camera? Touch HD has 5, some are up to 8, the TouchHD has a bigger screen AND looks better. Watched the WWDC stream, and it's all OOO and ARR, and granted some of their stuff is pretty impressive, and has some really nice possibilities with the Touch's for education, but still. Touch HD still gets my vote - I was hoping Apple would pull a surprise out, stick a 5mp camera into it, expand the screen, but they don't have to, throw a few placebos out, and they can be guaranteed queues and nice profits... because they've finally added the ability to capture video to the iPhone... not like other phones have been doing that for YEARS or anything.
  24. Happy Birthday EduGeek! Going from stength to strength! A big thank you to DB & the other admins for all the hard work that goes into the forums, conferences, BETT, etc., to the rest of the staff for keeping us ticking over, and ultimately to the members, without you all, EG wouldn't be what it is today. :D:D:D:D:D:D
  25. Two main reasons: 1) An ongoing history of very poor upgrades. They tend to come out right before a Census and are a necessary upgrade, so you have to upgrade as soon as they're released. However, they haven't been tested properly and cause huge issues, so staff completely loose confidence. Serco are aware, and say they are putting measure into place to ensure it doesn't occur, unfortunately it's been a running theme for in recent years. 2) Lack of a true "Markbook" feature. e.g. each department being able to have their own reporting structure. When we brought in CMIS, it was light years ahead of what SIMS could do (this was pre-SLG), lately though Serco seem to have rather dropped the ball. I believe they're in the process of re-writing the software from the ground up, (which is very good if you've ever looked at the database structure!), however, it's to little, to late, for us. That's not saying SIMS will be any better of course, but the inclusion of Markbook, slightly less nightmare-ish upgrade, and a change hopefully restoring some staff confidence, it was a necessity.
