  1. Yup - EU being involved in things they shouldn't yet again!
  2. I'm with Russ on the "white label" theory. IT is going cloud computing, that is certain, the tremors felt when Google announced ChromeOS is proof of that, even if they never release a thing! Windows as a client OS will take a hit, it already has with netbooks running Linux, and it will continue as more and more of what we do is based on the web. We have been going this way for a while now though, OWA for Exchange improves each iteration, VLEs are growing & doing more, and with home access ala Adito, EasyLink etc., we've had crude online storage. The missing link has always been the apps, not everyone having Office at home for example, (something possibly helped with Office Web Apps coming?), and although there is OpenOffice for that, the same doesn't help for same DT or Music apps. As with a lot of things, it'll be a gradual change. As has already been said, we need more ubiquitous Internet before the boundaries will get really pushed. My one issue with where most of the mainstream media have gone with Cloud Computing is this idea that companies like Google will provide all the services, and business in-house IT will die (screams of outsourcing and BSF anyone?). Google may well clean up, if they haven't already, in the consumer space, but I don't see Cloud Computing pushing businesses to outsource any more than they already do, companies will by-and-large still run their own IT shops. We're back to the "white label" idea - although some businesses may want to outsource, a large majority will want to keep it in-house, retain control. Again, what happens if the Internet connection drops? By having it in-house, you're not reliant on the Internet, you can run it over your LAN, where the real bonus comes, is that when you're travelling, or at home, the interface, the features, the access, you have, are entirely the same. What will happen is business will need faster data pipes, and more back-room infrastructure to handle the work, it's all very UNIX dumb-terminal. We use lots of netbooks in lessons - for the VLE and OWA only really - basically cloud computing. Though definitely a big deal, Cloud Computing will be an evolution, not a revolution.
  3. Happy birthday Have a good one!
  4. Same as with most TechNet licenses, it's an unlimited evaluation version with 10 activations. It's not like a "freebie" though, it's not allowed to be used for production usage and is for evaluation and testing purposes only, e.g. test it's integration on your network, application compatibility etc.
  5. Think that's changed now that the 'E' editions have been cut, so presume Upgrade editions will be available in the UK. All part of this "pick your browser" feature MS are incorporating. ...until Opera say the only "fair" way is to force everyone to have to use their browser that it!!
  6. On holiday so can't remember exactly how we ended up doing this... but from what I remember the major thing we forgot at first was the difference between the share itself, and the DFS permissions. At the root DFS level we set staff to have RO access to 'This Folder Only', then used dfsutil to grant RO rights to the relevant DFS links below it, otherwise ABE would show all folders regardless of their source NTFS permissions. On the share permissions, set the staff group to have FC, let the NTFS permissions do the work. On the NTFS permissions, make the Staff RO in that folder only, then add the permissions necessary on the folders below, SLT, English, etc.
  7. Been on the cards for a while, with Android & now ChromeOS, it was always going to mean he'd have to step down sooner rather than later because of the resulting conflict of interest.
  8. Not bad... "This one-size-fits-all approach to ICT is potentially harmful for education, driving out innovation. Some schools have been developing their own ICT systems and programmes, experimenting with innovations such as mobile technology. In such cases ICT is a critical part of changing the way they teach, and schools should be free to explore what works for their pupils. Some headteachers who have tried to opt out of the managed service but have been blocked by PfS are considering taking this to judicial review." ...it's good to see this sort of thing starting to come more often.
  9. The time has come for EG to step into the limelight once & for all! Great news! Who'd have envisioned this a few years ago? The best of luck Chris - no doubt you'll continue making EG go from strength to strength!
  10. Not sure if this is the same thing just rebadged? AL51
  11. Ouch! Get well soon mate
  12. Well, it's true in the sense that our establishments ARE supposed to be a "pillar of learning and intelligent decisions", the truth of course is that in the majority of cases, they're not. A good article, and some valid points. The trap he does fall into though is the same as many Open Source evangelists - Thinking that the decision is a total no-brainer because the software is free. If that were the only consideration, I'm sure everyone would be using it! The truth is, just as with the PC vs. Mac debate, that software choice is a gray area. The old question of support costs comes into play, Windows IT pros come cheaper than Linux IT pros, a balance needs to be done on the cost differentials there. Yes, there is some great educational Open Source software, is there a comparable OSS software package for everything the school does? Are the teaching materials for Open Source available? etc. etc. I standby my belief that, as with most things in life, a middle approach is needed. Students here are subjected to Windows and Mac (granted not Linux directly, but some backroom services run on it), Office and OpenOffice, and some other OSS for good measure as well. It doesn't have to be, neither should it be, one of the other.

    Keys Ahoy!

MSDN & TechNet get it August 6th I believe
  14. Lets hope the CPS use their brains for once, or the judge throws it right out. Would be a travesty of justice otherwise. Yet another case of the liberal left giving more rights to the criminal, and sod all to the decent people in this society.
  15. This whole thing angers me so much! Since when did a "monopoly" equal "the most successful". The EU, and the US for that matter, basically say "if you're the most successful, you must help those that aren't to catch up with you"... sorry, this isn't a charity, it's a business, designed to make money for shareholders. If Opera was the most amazing web browser in history, then install with Windows or not, people would use it. Waving it right in peoples face isn't going to help it become a better browser, all that'll happen is someone with no knowledge of browsers will probably end up installing it, then wonder why it's not "working properly". Have MS made some questionable decision in the past and stifled innovation, undoubtedly - Is not bundling other people's browsers with your OS anti-competitive? No, not really. If you DO want to make such a move, then that's fine, but make it across the industry, allowing Apple to bundle iTunes, Safari, and heck knows how many other apps should be stopped to, not because they're necessarily anti-competitive, but if a level playing field is what you want, then you can't have one rule for one, and one rule for another. Consumer choice is great, when it really is that, not when it's "beat on the successful company under a veil of legitimacy". What if I want to but a Mac have be able to choose Firefox as my browser?! It should be just as easy as Microsoft may well have to do. This whole - Beat MS as the big evil, love Apple, they can do no wrong, and it's DIFFERENT - arguments is moronic.
  16. Hero all the way - HTC make blinding handsets, & Android is a decent OS. You'll pay through the nose for an iPhone which isn't as blinding as people make out.
  17. 40GB for Primary Partition C - OS files only (Srv 2008) A varied size, usually about 1/3 of remaining space depending on server role, D drive - Software as required. Rest of space E drive - Shared files. RAID5
  18. What's hers is hers, what's yours, is hers.
  19. Just setup your .sch.uk website to redirect to an external domain name.
  20. Congrats to you both!
  21. Happy birthday wITch Another year young! Smile... EduGeek loves you!
  22. Not beyond QualphaSmart Sync
  23. IT Teachers should NEVER be administrators (apart from in a very small school where the Network Manager and IT Teacher are the same person, very rare these days). If there are not two IT professionals in the school, have a second administrator account given to the Head in a sealed envelope for use in an emergency. He can scream to his Union/Govs if he wants, but he'll get short shrift, and that's before you even get started on the Data Protection aspects of a classroom teacher having unbridled access to everything!
  24. I've got the TouchHD - absolutely LOVE it!! Have played with the Pro2... but too bulky, and love the screen on the HD. There are rumours about HTC Firestone (HD successor), but nothing official, so wouldn't bother. Can't comment on how Orange lock it down though as got mine via CPW.
  25. Yes, Apple does a "Microsoft" worse than Microsoft ever did, but Apple aren't as successful as Microsoft, so nothing will happen. Plus they're the media darlings. If you become successful then you shall be attacked for doing whatever made you successful in the first place... apparently you should play fair and help your competitors catch up to you. This is usually when the Apple/Opera fan boys will come out shouting about how what Apple do with bundling, and hardware tie-in don't forget, is an entirely different thing. Getting to the point - You'll need to check with your licensing expert... we all will!... but I think SA works on upgrading the LICENSE you have, not a SOFTWARE upgrade as you see it from the consumer PoV, so we should be OK.
