I didn't say throw it away. I actually said the opposite. Please see my response to Boredguy. (at the time of starting to write this you hadn't responded). I am going to draw a line under this as we are going way off the original topic here. I am happy to continue elsewhere is there is a constructive discussion to be had.

This could be likely be the financial decisions made by the MAT. In my last position (2 years ago granted) the MAT ran at a considerable surplus. We had a healthy IT budget, all schools had also been upgraded from RI to good or outstanding. They were some sound financial decisions and revenue from other sources. It probably couldn't work for all but I do believe there is an industry wide issue of poor financial management in education in the UK. Most of the people making the decisions are not from the finance industry nor had any training. But its the IT folk (and others) who suffer.

I have worked in education for a long time including time as a senior leader. I know how it works. It isn't just 1 business. It includes other business and schools. Do not take your work experience as the norm either... Buying outdated technology and expecting a long term service life is a poor procurement decision. Whilst the physical asset might be 5 years old it's using 9 year old technology.

They were short term solutions and an exception. I work in a business and this is the reality. These type of devices also went out of service when I was in schools. Removing a device from service doesn't mean throwing it away with no financial return. In fact in many cases a carefully planned refresh meant that selling 3 year old devices meant a lower cost per month. Plus users had better facilities. Besides - by the time Windows 10 is end of life these devices will have 9 year old processor and should be gone anyway.

It would have been a 3 year old processor. In the real world devices with a 3 year old process would be being removed from service or not far from it.

It sounds like you have ancient hardware that should have been replaced already. You can’t really blame Microsoft that old hardware doesn’t work with modern software.
  7. I didn't know iPlayer had UHD. Are the usual shows in this as well please?
  8. Plus the the quality is still 540p! The BBC iPlayer is 720P. This is acceptable but surely SD (for modern shoes) in 2021 should be a thing of the past?
  9. Surely that cannot be right??
  10. We watched a couple of movies last night. Stand By Me - 1986 Now a classic. Some parts reminded me of my childhood, enjoying the outdoors doing random stuff with the local kids. Nobody - 2021 I enjoyed the movie. Although I thought the first 40 minutes or so seemed weaker than the rest. I seem to like every character than Bob Odenkirk plays
  11. There is quite a good 7 minute YouTube video about the new note.
  12. Why do astronauts use linux? because you can't open windows in space.
  13. All devices regardless of physical location should be secured. Taking them off site should have no baring on how secure the data is. Laptops can't be replaced easy. I have had 400 on order since February and don't expect to see them until August. That would threaten the existence of many organizations.
  14. Consider prevention techniques as well. A friend owns a business of around 30 staff and during Easter the office burnt down. Most of his staff had left their laptops on the premises and they burnt with the building. If they had brought them home they would have had them ready to go and the distribution would be considerably less.
  15. To add to this. I just used a VPN and connected to the UK. Google showed it as being in the UK. BBC iPlayer shows the exact messages as posted in the original message.
  16. If the BBC see lots of traffic form a single IP they have an automated system to ban that IP. This is to combat VPN connections from overseas. I am not sure what the threshold is though.
  17. The problem with wireless solutions is you have batteries to maintain. It can become a pain!
  18. Thanks heaps for posting this. You saved me some time and I'm very short on this at the moment!
  19. I find nails work better, they never blow! Plus a fraction of the cost!!
  20. When I worked in school all children (reception class and higher) used username and passwords. Although the characters in the password was reduced to 8 letter.
  21. The "HEVC Video Extensions from the Device Manufacturer" isn't appearing on the Business Store for some reason. As a result I can't get it into SCCM.
  22. You cannot open HEIC image files that are produced by the camera on IOS devices on Windows 10. Having a look at options online means you either have to pay for an app or have a watermark on the image. I am wondering if anyone knows of a free method to open these files please? Thanks
  23. There is also Wifi on the plane itself. I flew Qantas last night an enjoyed free wifi for the entire trip.
  24. Is anyone else able to throw their hat in the ring please?
