    Ok thanks - I will ask them what they are worried about me seeing, they may be worried unduly. Although I do suspect the main reason is that their sims knowledge is minimal and they don't know how to grant me the perms in the first place. Charlotte

    Thanks for your reply vikpaw, I do understand the problem they have in some respects, and as suggested I did ask for my role to be looked at and for me to have responsibility for the permissions of individuals, for the reason that IT already give staff way too many permissions which may compromise my assessment data. I am as you stated - a data manager who heads up the assessment team, not an IT person really. Would it be possible for you write down exactly what my IT people need to do to give me access to edit/view permissions but exclude me from other stuff I don't need. Granted I could use the permissions to add myself in to the group, but then that would be professional misconduct and surely they cannot assume I am going to do that! Charlotte

    I work for a Federation (2 large sec moderns and a sixth form) where started two years ago as the assesment co-ordinator and have since had a promotion of sorts to data manager (that is my actual job title). I now manage a team of 4 admin staff who do all the data and assessment. You would think i most places this would be enough seniority to warrant having these permissions. I feel I am the only person really who can say what access people need, as I have the background knowledge as well as knowing people's job roles plus I work closely with so many senior staff across both sites that it's no longer viable to put a request in to the helpdesk everytime (paper form which needs to be hand delivered to IT office!!). IT staff then scowl across the desk at me and tell me it will be done when they can get round to it. The badly designed form doesn't even have a space for stating what perms the user should have. It simply lists which modules they need access to. The whole thing is a mess basically but they have such a tight reign on things it's impossible to improve/change anything. I'm totally frustrated by it all, they think I'm going to mess the system up or something. It really shows the state of the situation where I am telling them what access I need and how to adminitser it to me, because they have no clue how to.

    Also am I missing the point of the thread - that it's possible for staff to have permissions they NEED in SM7 without having access to things they don't?

    Thanks for all the re-assuring repsonses. As you can imagine this is just one of the issues I'm having with IT. It's fair to say that I'm not an IT expert, but I am however getting towards that level operationally in SIMS and have a very decent general knowledge of technology. I'm unsure about which way I can approach it anymore. Being one of the youngest staff here, and this only being my third academic year has put quite a few backs up but really all I'm interested in is doing my job properly and therfore having an impact on the pupils themselves.

    Hi All, I am a data manager in a large sec. modern. My IT department will not allow me to have Permissions to manage groups - as they feel it will be opening up the system too much!! Anyway, I wanted to confirm my suspicion that it is possible to be added in to the SM7 group, then have my perms defined so that I could view and manage groups with much else. Charlotte

    Hi All, We are a large sec. modern who use AM effectively through a system of templates to monitor progress. One area I am struggling with is how to calcuate whole levels of progress. We ask the staff to enter termly assessments in a sub-level, targets are also in sublevels. I then take one away from the other and divide by two to get number of sublevels progress from target. I am unsure how I can calculate whole levels when our grade set is in sublevels. It's not as simple as saying if you make three sublevels then it's a whole level because 3a to 4c is only one but is infact a whole level for reporting purposes. I thought of making a copy of every aspect to hold a whole level but am struggling on how to convert it. I wondered how other people do it? Thanks

    Hi All, I've downloaded a trial version of Crystal Reports, and want to use data in an excel spreadsheet as my source - I don't have the Excel add-in..is this required? I can't figure out how to get crystal to look at excel. Thanks

    No offence intended here David - I didn't like the product but that doesn't mean to say others wouldn't. I'm looking for an alternative method I can use without having to pay a third party to do the work. Thanks to everyone for your input on this.

    Thanks for your example - looks very nice and I can see that it would be very useful if people were using it themsleves. I would be prepared to spend the time and effort coming up with something that would be a long term solution, it's just very daunting as I've hardly used VB let alone anything else. Charlotte

    Yes that sounds like the sort of thing I want to achieve, then it would be set up in advance of the report being needed. I thought maybe a conditional vlookup would do it but then I'm not sure it's worth the risk because I find them to be temperamental.

    I have looked at 4Matrix and hated it. Looked at SISRA and loved it but couldn't get financial backing, hence I have tried to become an Excel expert which I am finding is starting to limit me. Discover may well be the key but I've been told that won't be until Summer Holidays so nothing I can do for the rest of the term other than work longer hours. Just wanted to bounce around some ideas about how other people produce a report for their SMT etc. Charlotte

    Thanks for your replies. NorthernSands - yes you would be correct to say that the groups are dynamic and that after every data collection the pupils change. I've been trying to get Discover sorted but ICT are dragging their heels saying they need another install before we can have it. I do think this may be the answer and I would be more than happy to do the set up if it helped during the year. Vikpaw - can you eleborate on - So you filter, move to conditional sheet and print that. I've lost two admin assistants in the last few weeks and am drowning as you can imagine - everyone wants every type of anaylsis and I simply can't provide using this method. Charlotte

    Hi All, Think this is a long shot but thought I would post anyway. I run assessment at a large sec. modern and currently produce a report (ring bound booklet) containing lists of specific pupils (pupils on target 5A*-C, pupils with <85% attendance, pupils arriving with KS2 L4 etc) along with headlines and various bits of analysis. I have an excel spreadsheet set up which has a tab for the raw data (targets and attainment) and these feed in to the analyses to give me the headlines etc. The arduous part comes in when printing the report. There are 20 focus groups in all, which we have to filter from the raw data to start with on whatever the criteria is, then hide out the columns we dont need, then rename the header to say the name of the group then print page by page. For 20 focus groups this takes about a day or so to produce the whole thing. This is far too long and I can't help thinking there must be a quicker way. Any feedback or input would be gratefully recieved. I've spent so long staring at it I've lost any sense of objectivity or idea!!! Charlotte

    Hi All, We are using Profiles for End of Year Reports, I asssumed that after each full stop in the comment bank, it would insert a space before starting the next sentence. I am finding that this is not the case and that the reports are coming out without the space. Am I really going to have to go and put a space after each full stop for every comment bank and year group?? Charlotte

    Hi All, I am planning on setting up templates to calculate residuals when the results come out in August, I'm using last year's data to have a play. I've done RESULT - APS in one review column then another to divide by 6 to get the residual. However, when the result of the review column is negative, dividing it by 6 then puts it back to positive which is obviously a problem. Same thing occurs for Value Added. Is there a way round this? I don't want to go back to Excel as we have done in previous years. Ideas/suggestions welcome!! Charlotte

    We are a large Sec. Modern using Profiles for our end of year reporting to parents. All our science groups are shared between two teachers. I have set up the session sucessfully but the classes for science data entry are appearing in both teacher's view. If they both write a report will both show when generated? I have told them only one of them needs to write a report for each group but I dont trust them not to fill it in anyway. Anyone know what will happen? Charlotte

    Hi All, Havent had much luck getting any information from SIMS so far (shocked face) We are a large school and would like to audit the permissions staff have in SIMS. Is there a way to run off a list/report of staff names and the groups they belong to? Also my manager wants to know if there is a report which can be run once a day for example to show what changes have been made to pupil records and who by. Any help appreciated. Charlotte
