Thanks for all the input guys. I'm not sure the setvol approach is going to work as that appears to affect the headphone socket as well as the speakers. I can't see any option in the Realtek HD Audio Manager to set the headphone socket as default. The stick a dead lead in option sounds like a very good shout though!

We have some all-in-one Dell Studio One 19 machines, on which I'd like to kill the speakers, which would be fairly easy to do by disabling the drivers for the sound card (Realtek, btw). But we need to keep the sound working if headphones are used. There's nothing useful in the BIOS to disable the speakers as far as I can tell. I'm upgrading them to XP Pro from the supplied Vista, in a vanilla AD environment. Does anyone have any pointers?

We've used a number of companies over the years, the label "cowboy" could be easily attached to some of them. Saville are the company we like to use at the moment, the installs are of a high standard and we haven't been messed around or left with half finished jobs in the way we have been with some other companies.

Somebody was flogging an old film SLR on eBay a few weeks ago with a lens which would be compatible with Sony SLRs like mine. The seller was amazed at the level of interest - I don't think they had realised that the majority of bidders were only after the lens, and weren't interested in the camera body. A decent lens isn't a cheap thing to make, and there's a thriving second hand market for them. Photography isn't a cheap hobby!

Looks like the Fuji SLRs are compatible with certain Nikkon fit lenses, so you have quite a lot of options. Should be possibilities on eBay, or places like Second hand cameras, camera part exchange, digital cameras UK, used cameras, photographic shops, England or pixmania

My mum's machine has a VNC server, started from an icon on the desktop rather than as a service, and one of the Dynamic DNS clients on her router so I don't need to get the IP address out of her over the phone.

My understanding is that the video over ethernet devices are really video over UTP cable. It just sends the composite video down one pair and each of the audio legs down its own pair. It doesn't get digitised at any point, so sending it through a switch and on through fibre isn't going to work. Sounds like you need a computer at each end and stream it over the network, using software such as that mentioned above. Windows Media encoder is also worth a look.

If you disable that policy then what is set on the machine should apply.

I don't know if Speedquest has the same limitations as the Multiquest app we use for tests, but you may find you have to get Speedwell to create a decode file for each type of form you want to use, at considerable expense. We went down the route of Kofax Ascent Capture and a scanner with a sheet feeder to do questionnaires, which while it's a pain to set up is a lot more flexible.

The Estate Agent valuation is just a ballpark figure that doesn't really count for much. The main reason the lender requires a "proper" valuation is to satisfy them that the property is worth the amount of the loan you are securing on it. This is to avoid a situation where you agree a purchase price with the seller of say £150k and take out a 90% mortgage of £135k. You then find yourself unable to pay the mortgage and they reposess the property, and discover that it's only worth £120k. They are £15k down (ignoring the market value fluctuations between buying it and reposession). If the valuer comes back with something considerably lower than the price you've agreed (in an non-binding, STC way) with the seller, and the seller isn't prepared to accept the price the valuer says it's worth you may find that the lender isn't prepared to provide a mortgage for the higher price.

A purely hypothetical question *cough* On the website for a small group of people who are, say, doing research into music, you use a stock photo of somebody's hands on a piano keyboard. The stock photo features a black person's hands, but you know that everybody in the research group is white. Is photoshopping the image to lighten the skin colour, so that the image is more representative of the group it is supposed to be representing, acceptable?

I don't think I've ever hit the "targets for the next year" on my appraisal, almost always due to priorities being changed by those above, or a somebody else's project which is a prerequisite to mine happenning going pear shaped. A year is a long time in IT!
