  1. Hiya, Can you not use the public folder and create a calendar item and give normal users read access and other users author or publishing author access so they can edit/remove items as needed. This can be done using outlook. Ash.
  2. The directed broadcast can be controlled so it only allows by one host or set of hosts. Again this can be made into an ACL to control which device can send the directed broadcast. I think most vendors now offer the tools to manage a L3 network and as DMccoy mentioned the ACLs on switches are at least used for control of the traffic flow in an inter-vlan infrastructure. Ash.
  3. Believe me i would love it if the RBCs just acted like ISP and schools control their own IP addressing scheme but this is not the case with some RBCs. We at our school are using our own IP addressing scheme for the various subnets as we are not with an RBC and i would recommend that schools should look into moving to layer 3 design of their network infrastruture. I agree the internal routing ACLs should be able to cater for all the needs and so don't quite get what Piqueaboo is trying to say. Ash.
  4. Hi I think this should be possible by creating another calendar on a mailbox and sharing that. In Exchange 2007 a user can have as many calendars as she/he wants i.e. some people use the main calendar for work and another or personal i.e. holidays, appointments (personal) etc. It should be possible on both outlook 2003 and 2007. Ash.
  5. Hiya, If you have the symantec antivirus coprorate editon then you need to have v10.2.3.3000 or above to make auto protect work correctly. If you have the endpoint protection then you need Endpoint 11 MP4, MR2 or above for it to correctly work with server 2008. The above assumes you have symantec installed. If this is happening with any other vendors then you need to contact them. Ash.
  6. Hi all, We have a 2008 SP1 32bit edition as a member server on a 2003 network. We ave recently seen that at random times the shares (that are shared on the 2008 box) would be lost and clients (windows xp) would freeze up. I have done some research and it looks like an issue with symantec antivirus and some other AV vendors as well. The problem will be cured temoporarely by rebooting the server but will crop up again. We have Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate edition v10.2 and after removing this the situation is stable again. Just wondering if others have had this issue. Looking on the net there seems to be fair amount of people who are having the issue even on SP2 and 64bit versions of server 2008. Release notes for Symantec AntiVirus 10.2 Client for Vista and Windows Server 2008 Server 2008 Share Keeps Going Offline Looks like there is an update to the AV software to fix the issue, but i would like to know if this is happening to anyone else. Thanks, Ash.
  7. Hiya, You don't have by any chance symantec antivirus corp edition installed on the server? If so then this is one of the causes of shares located on a server 2008 being disconnected and not available. I'm not sure that it applies to printers biut we had a few problems with the shares being completely inaccissible and locking upi PCs. Ash.
  8. There are ways around this where it can broadcast for the whole subnet. I know this becuase we had to tweak our ACLs to get WOL working on another subnet/vlan. I would say that you need to plan plan and plan more before implementing vlans as it can cause issuses which are not easier to spot. DHCP relay agent should not be needed if you switches support ip helper type of command where it the switch recieves a broadcast packet and forwards that as an unicast packet to the dhcp server. This is certainly possible with cisco and hp siwtches but can't say for other vendors. IP subnet and address space should be carefully thought out especially (i'm not a fan of this at all) if you IPs are allocated by your RBC. The core switch acts as a layer 3 switch which handles the routing between the vlans and it is also the switch that should have all the different vlans defined so it makes it possible to create ACLs to control traffic. Ash.
  9. Fair point about the router, support etc, but other vendors have this as well so that nothing new. I was surpised that you guys needed a true 100mb connection. I thought it would be better to have say 40 or 60Mb connection and cut the cost to say £15-18K, would save the school some money per year. Whats your current average i.e. how much is used when the school is busy. Have you done any monitoring to see how much you guys are using. We have over 1700 users inc staff and 8mb Leased line is fine. Even in the busy times its rearely more than 4Mb. Ash.
  10. Hiya, You probably need to need to a) create a security or distribution list with all the students and 2) use this distribution/security list in each of the parent's contact so any member of the security or distribution list cannot send email to a particular contact. Effectivelt this will not allow students to send emails to parent's emails. You will have to use ADmodify to set this for bulk but should be fairly easy. The tricky part is finding out what the custom exchange atrribute is called for restricting the users who can set (i.e. reject messages from recipients) option. As for your your second question. There is a setting for security of the address, you have to use ADSI edit for this but once you set this all the parents address list will not be available to students although they can see the list but cannot view the content of it i.e. the parents contacts. Have a look at the following video tutorials for managing address list: Address Lists in Exchange 2007 (Part 1) Address Lists in Exchange 2007 (Part 2) HTH, Let me know if you want more info. Ash.
  11. £30K! that seems a hell of lot of dosh. Is this 100mb true bandwidth (i.e. no contention ratio) or shared on a ration of 1:n i.e. 4, 8, 16 businesses sharing the pipe? I do find that Zen seems to be expensive, yes given the reliabiliy and support is good but still the cost does need to be understood by Zen as well as the customer i.e. discounts for education and selling under the catalyst (OCS buying solutions). Ash.
  12. Hiya, Don't remove the device but rather change the driver by right-clicking the autoloader and then update driver. Go through the wizard and select the unknown medium changer. This installs the microsoft driver rather than the manufacturer. This was also the case with 11d, i thiought the may have fixed it in v12.5 but looks like they haven't. Ash.
  13. Hi, If you are having speed issues then in device manager, make sure that the driver for the autoloader is set to unknown medium changer and not the manufacturer driver. The driver for the tape drive itself should ideally be the symantec one for better compatibility with symantec BE product. Ash.
  14. Hiya, You probably have gone through it but have a look at the videos at the following links: VIDEO: Creating managed folders - Part 1 http://www.msexchange.org/articles_tutorials/videos/exchange-server-2007/management-administration/video-creating-managed-folders-part-2.html Ash.
  15. Sorry not having a go or critising but why have you got two domains, any particular reason. I find it it easier to stick with one domain and setup the security and model the heirachy to the organisation's needs. It obviosuly creates less hassle and in my opinion makes administration easier. Ash.
  16. dear me, £40m sterling seems a hell of lot money to the British Telecom!!!, can't understand it. They are are not that great when it comes to infrastructure, really they are not. Ash.
  17. Yes the Admodify utility should be able to do this, its brilliant. Ash.
  18. Have you turned off the forms based authentication on the exchange server? If you are publishing owa through isa server then you need to turn off FBA on the exchange server otherwise you get this type of errors and double prompt for username and password. Worth a try. Ash.
  19. I think for people who already have any types of wireless system either managed or unmanaged, ruckus needs to do some incentive to buy back or trade in the existing wireless systems. This may provide a v. good reason ro make for people migrate to Ruckus or other wireless network vendor. The problem is that what does the customer do when they have the existing wireless equipment, just chuck it away? That would not go down well with management as you would have not got a lot out of the money you spent on where as if ruckus, HP and other wireless vendors did some scheme where they provide some rebate for trading on your existing kit it make make it customers worthwhile to move over. Also this should be open to all major wireless vendor's equipment and not just selected few. Ash.
  20. Yeah this is the problem, why are they taking it away, they should have engineer arrive with the parts and swap it out onsite so no need for courier getting it back etc. We have Dell as others have menioned and use dell for server, laptops, and desktops and never had any problems. We have got some Fujitsu-siemens as part of LFT and they wree awful, had to call them and they collected the laptop and we never say it again for good 6 weeks!!. Ash.
  21. Its for our film/media studies students who need individual areas to store the captured videos and also any manipulation they do. Their main my docs are all on the servers that do connect to a SAN using iSCSI. I didn't want that amount of data on the main server so we are looking at the snap server just for film and media studies as i mentioned earlier. Looking at the guardian OS v5 it may be possible to do NTFS permission as looking at the spec it does mention AD support and therefore support for AD users and groups. Ash.
  22. Hiya, Did you use the NAS part of it to connect to the domain and set NTFS permissions? We're looking at the 3TB model for snapserver 410 and were just wondering if its possible to share out a drive to this NAS unit and setup ACLs (NTFS) based on AD groups? Anyone done this etc? TIA, Ash.
  23. Doesn' Backupexec display this in MB/min (i.e. megabytes per minute)? Ash.
  24. That's because they used to be an IBM devision which was crap. I never liked the prices or units when they were IBM, thinkpas thickpad thickoes!! IBM has been arrogant in a lot of things so it no wonder that lenovo is the same. I agree with the prices if they priced it more competative then they may get more sales in public sector. We have beenusing Dell equipment for ages and their warranty and support have been excellent, can't fault them really. Not had much dealing with HP but one of my guys tell me that installing the power supply unit they sent on one of the PC was an absolute nightmare. Thank fully we are now replacing those units (and nearly all of the legacy HP boxes) with Dell PCs. Ash.
  25. We have deployed the firewall client since day one and never had any problems with it. I would not advise installing FWC on any servers though as you want to keep them as SecureNAT clients. Ash.
