I was going to try the one from google built into chrome, I think you need to sign in to chrome but apart from that nothing else to install. Is there any reason to prefer 3rd party solutions, or not to use the google one ?

do you mean use Azure AD Connect ? https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/enterprise/deploy-office-365-directory-synchronization-dirsync-in-microsoft-azure also do you have to move to azure in one big bang or can you phase it e.g. just do for a test OU. If it's big bang one way no going back I think I'd want to run it in a test env first. How would you do that, spin up a few vms?

yeah forgot to say We'd be looking at free (as in beer ) as on A1 Plus I guess if we could get rid of the server completely, the cost savings (e.g. hardware) could be used for extra licenses

@snagrat can you say some more ? Our situation is we use office 365 and G Suite for education. We also have a physical server (2012 R2) does the DNS, DHCP etc. I'd love to get rid of the Domain controller and go cloud but I thought "azure" wasn't a direct replacement for a physical on site domain controller ? I've heard people mention hybrid which seems to mean just syncing the local AD user accounts to office 365 (not computer accounts) ? But our office 365 login names are different from the local AD ones so not sure how that would work and what benefits would be anyway ? Be interested to know how you went serverless on site Could you link to any MS docs / roadmap with options / benefits / limitations etc?

Hi, just wondering how people approach this. We use office 365 which enforces strong passwords but we also have separate active directory logins to the domain. Some of these passwords are very weak. I know a fair few of them which can be helpful e.g. if I need to login to a teacher PC. So how do you do it? E.g. do you enforce strong passwords and regular password changes and if so how do you manage logging in as the teacher on their PC in order to troubleshoot etc.

We have some ipads without cases so whatever we use to clean them needs to not damage the ipad as well as remove the virus. Apparently soapy water (warm is better) is good enough to remove / dislodge the virus from a surface. So maybe just a wrung out cloth and quick wipe would be good enough and not damage ipad ? And that would be safe for kids to do, just leave a bucket in classroom ! Maybe not, visions of kids dunking ipads like a sheep dip Mmm, no virus, no ipads, less to support, sounds like a plan, back to chalk and talk! But seriously would a wrung out soapy cloth be ok ?

where do we stand on this ? E.g. if SLT ask us to clean all laptops, tablets, PCs daily ? Could we refuse?

Migration from network shares to SharePoint storage
mrstrong replied to hanmark's topic in Cloud Services
I've been thinking about this, but am a bit out of my depth with sharepoint / teams / groups and azure/office365 so wouldn't feel confident rushing into this and then supporting it on top of all my other jobs. Our file shares are a real mess with huge nesting of folders, duplicate files, inconsistencies in structure naming conventions etc, etc. I call our main share the skip (maybe because it's yellow and people dump anything in there ). Found this article very good as a starting point: https://www.itpromentor.com/understanding-file-server-migrations/ and this https://www.itpromentor.com/sync-server-to-teams/ e.g. -

In the web app that we use e.g. https://outlook.office.com/ if you go down on the left hand side (may need to scroll down) to Groups and expand it and click on the group eg "Staff" then click the 3 dots ... in the next column and click settings to bring up group settings and you can the tick "follow in inbox"

mrstrong replied to mrstrong's topic in Cloud Services

Skype for Business - Meetingsapp.msi - Install for all users
mrstrong replied to timbo343's topic in Windows 10
Hi, we use office 365 for teachers but have been "updated" to Teams (will eventually replace SfB July 2021?) so we can't start SfB meetings but can join them ok. Have tested it ok with teachers joining with the SfB in office 2016 and the web app (i.e. the msi install which we allow) But note for us in both cases the teachers still had to login with their office 365 credentials. -

Glad to see they've got neighbours back on track https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-52355045 Get your priorities right -
Never heard of NHSX are they part of NHS Digital? All sounds a bit shadowy like the X files. Just waiting for some conspiracy theorist to say corona virus was cooked up in a lab to get us all to install this app! 1984 etc To be fair I'll probably install it, from what I've heard it won't be collecting too much data so not to worried and it may work!

As the sun is shining thought I'd try working outside but it is very hard to see my chromebook screen. Is it possible to find laptops / chromebooks that can be used well outside in bright sunlight ?

Got a Chromebook which when you check for updates says its up to date (on version 74 (been on the shelf for a while!)) Another one exact same model on version 80 so I know it will take later versions but how to force it to update ? Also in school chromebooks auto connect to school wifi on boot / wake from sleep but they don't seem to do this on home wifi: you have to manually go in and connect it again which is a royal pain in the #!r5e Is there a setting some where to fix this ?

I've used https://www.httrack.com/ before to grab a site, looks like not been updated in a while so may struggle with modern sites but worth a try to get the content then I'd start again with whatever web dev tools / env you prefer/know Also find these links with a quick google search https://www.lifewire.com/top-website-copying-programs-2655052 https://www.scrapehero.com/open-source-web-scraping-frameworks-and-tools/

We've been doing the joe wicks pe some days, my back ache is pretty bad at the moment, I'd put it down to poor chair at home but maybe it's the wicks workout ? Also he always does a 5min warm up but very little cool down, is this right, I thought the cool down / stretches after was more inportant than the warm up? Might have a look at FitnessBlender and try some yoga / pilates, can you reccomend any good resources?

Newbie setting up Microsoft Teams for a college - Teams or Channels?
mrstrong replied to BJG's topic in How do you do....it?
I find this very frustrating that a huge organisation like MS can't provide better guidance on best practice (in general and not just teams / office 365). About the best I could find was https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/get-started-with-teams-create-your-first-teams-and-channels and also https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/best-practices-for-school-leaders-creating-teams-and-channels-in-microsoft-teams-for-education-f3663ad9-a835-4971-9acb-6725a543c003 What I'd like to have is a set of detailed tutorials e.g. for a typical primary school a typical secondary school that covers every step, right down to names of teams and channels to create etc. -
Hi, we are using Office 365 and I've had reports from a user trying to send emails all week to an external email address but they are not receiving them. Strange thing is they able to email our user and apparently yesterday our user's reply worked but today it didn't. Any ideas/tips how to troubleshoot this? E.g anywhere I can look in admin centres to check if email got sent or turn on "verbose logging" for this user to trace stuff ? Not sure if this is even possible with email?

mrstrong replied to mrstrong's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Just checked and it is now fine for me too. Wonder what caused problem ? Funnily enough just doing some reading about certificates (for vpns). Any reason why the edugeek ie EduGeek.net - The I.T. Professionals' life line says Not secure ? -
Staff trying to access https://www.elearning.prevent.homeoffice.gov.uk/edu/screen1.html get the "Your connection is not private", whats going on here ? actually just noticed I've also got the "Not secure" next to the URL for this forum ?!
