Hi, experimenting with WDS: would anyone be able to post a working unattend file for deploying LTSC 2019 ? Also a bit confused as to if I need two unattend files? e.g. you can specify an unattend in the server properties (client tab) but also you can specify an unattend file for each image (right click on image, select properties)?!

Hi, got a brand new laptop with ssd. I let it boot up and made a note of drivers. I did this manually e.g. a few screenshots of device manager: is there a better way to do this e.g. list hardware and installed drivers in a format that can be easily compared (e.g. if a .txt file via linux diff command)? Then I tried my MDT install. Worked ok, few unknown devices, after windows update these were fixed apart from one I had to manually search for. Then checked all drivers again vs my screenshots. All ok apart from IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, my MDT image had a standard Microsoft version whereas originally it was a specific, later intel one. Is this worth fixing? Presumably I’d need to find the chipset drivers and add to MDT. Would you add them to boot image? Or maybe just add a new step to task sequence to install them?

Mmm, might look into vlans. Beginning to wonder if I should have just said can't do / not possible. Still bit late now: easy to give, not so easy to take away

Like I said: I have added a new user on MFDs for audit/billing purposes. I was more interested in how you allow visitors / external agencies to print from a technical perspective, especially with regards to security. Any thoughts ?
-
Hi, we have our main network and also a guest wifi (separate subnet / vlan) We let guests use the guest wifi but they can't print. The MFDs are on the main network, nothing fancy like papercut but there is some software on the print server which allows staff to release their jobs from any MFD (I think they call it follow me printing) I've now got an external agency on site a lot that need to print. Their laptops are locked down, not on domain, and they use google docs for pretty much everything. To get them printing asap I joined them to the main network wifi and connected to print server as a generic domain user (saving credentials) and manually added printer. On MFDs set up new user for audit/billing purposes should it be needed. Thinking now the generic domain user I used probably has too many privileges, maybe I should create another more restricted account? Like I said, bit of a rush job so be interesting to know any thoughts on best practice with this sort of thing? How would you do it ?

We also do via User Configuration > Preferences > Control Panel Settings > Printers and we have the action as update. Think at one point it was replace but that caused slow logins.

Hi, been asked about this. Has anyone done this e.g. with a physical screen overlay or maybe some software (it will probably be needed on a chromebook rather than windows laptop) Ta

Whats an "active" pdf ? I've used pdfsam for splitting / merging. Also sumatra as a lightweight reader and google docs can export as pdf.

Hi, I've got an old mac mini server (late 2012) running OSX 10.11.16 I use it to manage ipads via Apple configurator 2 and also use Server version 5.2 to use the caching service so it's pretty critical to our infrastructure. It has a usb plugged in for time machine backups I've been thinking about updating it to get access to the latest version of Apple configurator (needed for DEP) but have very little knowledge re macs so I'm not sure what is the safest approach to take. E..g how to go about updating and to which version and any associated risks (esp. how to recover from a time machine backup if things go wrong). Any advice appreciated

switch doesn't have to have an ip to work, e.g. like the cheap unmanaged ones you can buy. most switches will forward Ethernet frames without any configuration. This means that you can buy a switch, plug in the right cables to connect various devices to the switch, power it on, and the switch will work properly. However, to perform switch management over the network the switch will need to have an IP address.

Hi, teacher has requested to use "talk to type" on her new laptop Its windows 10 Ed 1903 with word 2016. The inbuilt mic seems ok but when i turn on speech recognition and go through the setup it asks me what type of mic I am using: headset, desktop or other. Whichever one I choose on the next wizard page where you have to read out some text it doesn't hear anything so I have to cancel out. However if I hit "windows key"+H it sometimes starts listening (sometimes it says "something went wrong"!) but I have got it to recognize text in the outlook web app (office 365 email) running in google chrome. Also if I try windows-H in Word 2016 (this is where she really wants to use it most) it says "dictation isn't fully supported" and doesn't recognize anything. Any ideas? I wonder if there is some GPO setting (e.g. for coratanna?) that is to blame ?

Mmm looks like you still need a mac with apple configurator to add devices to apple school manager ? I think i'm going to have to go with the KISS principle as I only have an afternoon to get all this sorted.

cheers, those mdms look interesting but from a quick read appears you really should supervise but without a Mac thats not possible unless I misunderstood ?

Hi, I've had a call about setting up some old ipads that are in a "bit of a mess". Sounds like they are ipad 2's. There's only 6 and I don't think they have a mac in the school. What are my options regards setting them up? I was thinking maybe just factory reset them and sign in with a single apple id on all 6? Or can itunes on a PC be used to help me manage them in some way? E.g. if they want some restrictions on the devices ? (PS I'm doing this as a "favour" so I want a solution that I can just hand over to them to manage going forward)

For now I've gone back to the ios Mail app. Although initially I couldn't find it (didn't know you can uninstall system apps!) so after much head scratching realised I had to re-download/install it from app store. Also set her groups in office 365 to "follow in inbox" As regards old equipment this teacher is "lucky" as we still have several ipad 2 on ios 9 ! And don't get me started on PCs/laptops: we recently did an audit of windows 7 PCs/laptops (as it is going end of support). We currently have 80, 40 of which will be more than 9 years old in Jan 2020! I will try to update as many as poss but now my WDS server has just died on me and with all the day to day support etc its going to be a struggle (on my own here (primary 600 kids, >100pc/laptop, >100ipad, >200 chromebook) working 3 days a week term time only "network manager" +1 day teaching computing!)

Thanks for the ingenious suggestions, as luck would have it the vendor got back to me: its the "blue" button to freeze ! Guess it makes sense, blue, cold, freeze ? Anyway how embarrassing, I swear I sat there for 10 minutes while I pressed every button on the remote several times

Hi, Teacher can't get emails on her ipad using outlook app since september. On investigation it's an ipad 4 so stuck on ios 10.3.3 Tried to update and get message iOS Version too old: basically "...from sep 3rd iOS 10 not supported" Thanks MS! I suppose I could try built in ipad mail app but last time I tried that it didn't support groups. Any suggestions ?

thanks for advise, will give it a try when next in

thanks will try contact the vendor. mavhc: take it your "snipping" solution needs the 2nd monitor? Never had a 2 monitor setup, just looking at pc, it has one VGA and one DVI out. Is it just a matter of connecting 2nd monitor to DVI ? All our old monitors are VGA so maybe I can use a DVI to VGA adapter.
