Hi, I'm trying to map a network drive to our NAS (a QNAP) via net use s: \\qnap\share but get System error 64 has occurred. or System error 58 has occurred. Tried posting on qnap and MS forums but no joy FYI Qnap is joined to our windows server 2008 R2 domain Other identical windows 7 laptops map the drive fine No errors in windows event logs The laptop maps other network drives to other shares on a 2008 R2 server just fine and all other networking appears ok, e.g. internet. Tried with wired / wireless, different user(network admin login), removed and re-joined laptop to domain, updated group policy Still same error every time. At a loss as to how to proceed with troubleshooting this issue. Wireshark to see if samba errors ? Never used Wireshark before so may need a good tutorial! Any advice welcome as it's driving me mad now. Ed

So are we saying MDT can deploy images with several partitions ? I'm assuming it's free? Any tutorials you could point me at ? The only other alternative I've found is FOG which seems a bit hard to set up, e.g. you need a beefy linux box for starters.

Ok, my head hurts a bit, but from what I've read It doesn't seem to be possible to deploy windows 7 with multiple partitions on the harddrive (i.e. C: and D:) via WDS. E.g. the WDS capture image wizard will only capture one partition: the OS (C:) so even though it is possible in theory to create a WDSUnattend.xml which will create multiple partitions when I PXE boot my captured image wim will only have one partition in it ?!!! Has anybody actually managed to do this in practice or do you all have images with only the C:\ partition ? Thanks

Thanks, had a quick look at part 2 of the wds forum sticky: Windows Deployment Services, WAIK & Windows 7 - Part 2 | SharePoint George I can see I will need to install WAIK ans use WSIM It says to load image install.wim from win 7 DVD and use this to create a WDSUnattend.xml However I'm trying to deploy a sysprepped image I've allready captured (step 4 in my first post in this thread) So should I use this image instead or is it to late for that ? i.e. do I need to create my WDSUnattend.xml first from the standard win7 install.wim then go through the whole sysprep, capture etc process again from the beginning ? Hi, So I decided to look into WDS to deploy a windows 7 image using this article Windows Deployment Services Getting Started Guide Quite long winded but I struggled through and basically did 1) set up my machine PC1 which has C:\ and D:\ drives 2) sysprep /oobe /generalize /shutdown 3) create capture image on server from existing boot image 4) PXE boot PC1 and select capture image and add it as an install image to server 5) PXE boot PC2 select boot image and choose to install my previously captured image Now PC2 goes into a "standard" windows setup, e.g. choose UK keyboard, timezone, user etc Also I deleted the old partitions on the drive (necessary to avoid a windows.old folder ?) Eventually I get to login only to find no D:\ drive (think correct term is volume or partition ?) It has created the hidden "100 MB windows 7 system partition" though. Am I missing something here ? Can't believe it is only possible to image PCs with a single C:\ drive ? Thanks

Ok thanks for the info I'll investigate manually for my PC. But what about all the other staff PCs on site, is there any way to automate the investigation and a subsequent fix (like removing authenticated users) ? Also I've got a USB drive plugged in and it is being shared as I$, but I can't set any security permisiions on it. Maybe as it's formatted as FAT32? So anyone can browse it, Ouch !!!

E has permission entries for "Administrators", "Authenticated users", "users" and "SYSTEM" Of course I could tweak these for my PC but how do I fix similar issues system wide in one fell swoop ?

Hi, I was at a teacher PC the other day and needed to get some software off my main PC (running XP SP3) so I broswed to \\MyPcName\E$ and all was good. Later, out of interest, I tried this from a non-admin pupil account and it worked and even allowed me to create/delete files !!! Obviously this is a bit of a security hole but I'm not sure of best technique to plug it. I read that you can disable sharing administrative shares but it will be re-anabled on reboot by windows. Also read I could have a startup/login/scheduled batch file to do e.g. NET SHARE E$ /delete Or is there a group policy fix ? (We are running server 2008 R2 Standard) Or maybe better to change security permissions locally for E: etc ? But what about all the other laptops / PCs used in office and by teachers as they will have the same issue. Don't want to have to manually set permissions on all computers individually ?!! Not sure why these admin shares exist anyway, should I blame Microsoft or the people who originally set up our network ? Thanks for any advice

I struggled for a few hours trying to get italc 2 installed without success, seem to remember I got confused by the authentication, windows or key but its a while ago now. Thanks

Hi, thanks for the replies. Lots to think about. I think I'll need to do some googling to understand all of the answers! I know the head wants new kit as most of the PCs are over 3 years old. probably looking at getting a mixture of new PCs and laptops. Not sure if the old PCs have windows stickers on. Will check I do remember seeing a file on the server with a Volume license key in it. Out of interest how do you all go about putting in new kit? E.g. if you do it all yourself where do you buy your hardware and licenses from, Or do you get an external third party to do some/all of it for you ? Could you recommend anyone I could use, e.g. just to get a few quotes. I'm beginning to think that trying to do this all by myself may be a step too far. Thanks

Hi, I recently started work in a primary school to help with ict. We have xp pro machines on a domain and one 2003 file server. All this was set up by a small local supplier some time ago. A lot of our pcs and server are very old and in need of replacment. Assuming we are allready fully licensed can I just reuse our licenses. E.g. we have an old PC with XP pro, office 2000 and lots of other software and the PC logs on to the domain. Can I just buy a new PC with e.g. windows 7 home premium on, take an image (e.g. ghost) of the old PC and copy it to the new one and then send the old PC off for recycling? Could I save more money by buying a PC with no OS installed and then putting the old PC image straight on ? How about the server. Assuming I can find the server install discs can I buy a new server, install windows server 2003 using our current license details (again assuming I can find them!) then recycycle the old server ? We currently don't have an ICT coordinator and I've not found any paperwork to do with licenses and nobody in school seems to know anything about it. What sort of questions should I be asking our original local supplier to make sure we are legit in terms of licensing ? What sort of paperwork should I or our original supplier be able to produce to prove we are fully licensed, e.g. for an audit. e.g. XP licenses, server licenses, sofware licenses (e.g. we seem to use office 2000 plus lots of apps like 2 simple) ? Are we likely to be audited on this ? Could anybody explain / point me to resources describing the basics of licensing in an educational environment in the united kingdom. Thanks for any advice.
