eventually timed out with enrollment error so tried a wipe this time it auto enrolled but office editing ppt still not working ok bring out the big guns: tried recover from usb (on both chromebooks, 79 and 84) now both on 84 (so that looks like a way to force update to latest available) now both not working, e.g. can't download and edit a ppt from twinkl, just get blank tab
-
just tried a powerwash, it booted up and I had to connect to wifi then it went to the enterprise enrollment screen so I put in our usual "enrollment user" credentials and now it appears stuck at "enrolling device" maybe should have gone straight for a complete wipe https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/1360642?hl=en

thanks, looks like updates stopped in Jun 2020. I think the one still on 79 has been in a teachers cupboard for some time hence never got updates! Maybe now june has gone it is destined to stay stuck on 79 for ever unless I can force it to update somehow? Also looks like the extension is built into chrome os so I shouldn't need to manually add? e.g. it doesn't show under "more tools - extensions" but when you open a ppt it appears in address bar: "Office editing for Docs, sheets & sildes chrome-extension://bpm... The more i use this chromebook (84) I think it is foobar as even the 9 dots app chooser doesn't work. More weirdness now saying no space left in google drive on the other one even though only 3GB used (maybe related to google's quota issue earlier in week ?) Think I'm going to try a powerwash

So, two identical chromebooks (hardware), one on chrome os version 79 saying "this is last automatic software and security update for this chromebook" one on chrome os version 84 saying "this is last automatic software and security update for this chromebook" go figure anyway on 79 powerpoints from twinkl open ok in "office compatibility mode" and I can open a ppt downloaded, it opens in the "extension" (built in?): "office editing for docs, sheets & slides" but on 84 I just get a blank page/screen. I've had a look at the release notes https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/7679408 from ver 79 to 84 (what happened to 82?! ) but can find anything to do with office editing changes. Can anybody shed some light ? Maybe I've just got a corrupt chrome os/extension on this chrombook, is there a way to "reset / reinstall"?

oh you're not switching image are you from 64 to 32 bit ? would need to change unattend file e.g. replace amd64 with x86 or vice versa

I had an odd mdt failure a while back, I think a task sequence had bombed out and when I fixed it and ran it again mdt got confused and wouldn't complete. I managed to fix by completely wiping the disk so mdt had a clean slate to start work on. re copying a task sequence I've used this before from Johan Arwidmark (one of the mdt "gurus") https://deploymentresearch.com/duplicating-task-sequences-in-mdt-2013-lite-touch/

Yay, I used to use clonezilla Was also going to suggest trying legacy boot in bios Had one recently that wouldn't pxe boot without this, anyway glad you got it working.

not heard of discover images, looks interesting. Also another option may be if you create bootable usb with the windows iso e.g. use rufus https://rufus.ie/ then just copy over your custom wim to sources\install.wim e.g. see step 3: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/deploy-a-custom-image

just got back to this, thanks, click cog like you said in drive, choose settings and tick "convert uploaded files to google docs editor format" not sure if there is a system wide setting but probably best to let users choose anyway. Like I said on PC you seem to be able to edit the docx in place with "Office Editing" it highlights "docx" in filename to remind you. On a chromebook I think you may need to install the extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/office-editing-for-docs-s/gbkeegbaiigmenfmjfclcdgdpimamgkj?hl=en more info here: https://support.google.com/docs/answer/6055139#convertcomputer

what is easiest/best way to do this? e.g. is it possible to do via a script? background: teacher has work sheets in word, prints and gives to kids to write in answers some kids struggle with writing but are ok typing, so I need to get the word doc, (editable) onto a chromebook. Looks like on a PC you can open a word doc in google docs, it doesn't convert it but lets you edit (with some limitations) i.e. keeps in docx format. Tried in Google Classroom, via assignment, attach file, word docx, make a copy for each student but students get a read only view, they get option to convert but the converted google doc is private to them, i.e. they can't just turn it in like with regular assignments they'd need to share it back to the teacher I think(?) Only way I've found is if teacher uploads word doc to drive, opens in google docs (as docx) then does a save as google doc and assigns that, but then you have two copies of the doc in drive and it's a faff / too long winded. Any suggestions to simplify this?

... also went with a gen 1 VM (i.e. legacy/bios). Am I right in thinking that if I do a capture in WDS I will get a wim image file that is independent from the boot type of the guest VM? e.g. so that I can use it with uefi booting laptops as well?
-
thanks, this was the quick fix. Hyper-v had set up a "Default Switch" of type "internal" that my VM was using. MS docs say "default switch gives VMs access to network using NAT". but maybe the PXE boot / DHCP process won't work in this default NAT scenario Anyway, I created a new External Switch (with allow management OS to share) and changed VM to use this.
-
I'm trying to pxe boot a hyper-v machine from my wds server (hoping to install windows 10 via wds) but get no response Tried gen 1 and gen 2 vm's I'm running hyper-v on a PC with only one network card, any ideas? a real physical PC pxe boots fine.

oh maybe it is this https://support.google.com/a/answer/60218?hl=en should have googled first

Is there a setting somewhere in admin console for this ? e.g. when teachers wants to invite another teacher to a class in google classroom currently they have to type the whole email address manually (which seems to cause them issues (fat fingers?) ) Surely autocomplete should be the default e.g. after you've typed first few chars of email?

Moving Shared Drives to SharePoint - any pointers!
mrstrong replied to mdrabble's topic in Cloud Services
@mdrabble did you create Teams first? Just been looking into this myself. Not really used teams/sharepoint before but want to start moving stuff to cloud so did a little experiment (all in chrome browser): I created a test team and a few channels, then in the channel's files tab, open in sharepoint then click Documents on lhs to see channels as folders then click sync which opens onedrive to sync all folders to windows explorer (local on pc) I created a new local folder in windows explorer under the synced documents this synced up to sharepoint but did not create a channel in teams I also added a Document Library in sharepoint and again this is not visible in teams. Not sure if I'm using it as intended but I think I could see this working for staff to upload stuff they want from shared network drives to the cloud. I don't like the two views/interfaces of teams and sharepoint to the cloud files but I guess you get used to it and staff will adapt their workflow over time. -
This loom looks pretty cool! How are you using it, e.g. for teachers to record lessons ? I guess you could do that with ms teams ?

Never used "modelling", I thought policy results gave you the actual settings currently applied on a client ?

Well this is embarrassing for PHE https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-54423988 Absolutely gobsmacked to be honest. Maybe the developers haven't heard of stack overflow ? https://stackoverflow.com/questions/17684610/python-convert-csv-to-xlsx

G Suite: add a wifi network for users in an OU
mrstrong replied to mrstrong's topic in Cloud Services
Thanks for the "chrome://policy and click Reload policies" didn't know about that. Is there a way to push this out centrally, like in Active Directory GPMC you can right click an OU and choose "group policy update" ? Anyway back to the original question: in my tests I had to have "apply by user" for it to pick up new wifi for users in OU. I also have an existing wifi applied by device at "top level" set to auto connect. So when chromebook boots at login screen it connects to this one. Then when you log in as user in OU it connects to new wifi (if auto connect on), or if auto connect off it stays on existing but allows user to manually switch. Edit if you leave auto connect off for the new wifi then when chromebook comes back from "sleep" e.g. after lid closed it reconnects to existing wifi Seems like no way to prefer the new network In fact that setting (Prefer this Network) is locked off on the chrombook but can't see where configured in admin console. -
G Suite: add a wifi network for users in an OU
mrstrong replied to mrstrong's topic in Cloud Services
Thanks, but I want this wifi to only be available for users in an OU so I guess I will have to use "apply by user" ? -
yep, like this visual https://downdetector.com/status/office-365/map/

Hi, I'm trying to add a new wifi network just for users in an OU following this https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/4601289?hl=en It doesn't seem to have worked, how long would you expect to have to wait before changes get pushed out to chromebooks ? Is there a way in gsuite to force out changes (like a gpupdate ?) Also it says in the tips: "Apply Wi-Fi networks by device instead of by user. This ensures that devices can access your Wi-Fi network at the sign-in screen." but the OU where I've added the wifi network only has users in it, the chromebook devices are in another OU, so perhaps I need to apply by user, a bit like in "Microsoft land" where if you apply a GPO with computer settings to an OU with just users it won't work?! But then will I have issues "at the sign-in screen." ?

Can't get on email, looks like a major issue
