[ms office - 2003] Office 2003 file association messed up
cookie_monster replied to cookie_monster's topic in Office Software
A full reinstall of Office fixed it in the end. Just selecting reinstall in group policy wasn't enough I had to unassigne and then reassign it, what a pain. -
We had a similar issue with restarting AP's, we updated to Version 8.2.0.1 build 8 and they've been fine since.

There's anumber of reasons really. On a DC I tend to go for just a straight C: drive but on file servers or boxes with many roles 'if' there's only one disk (rare these days I know) then it can make sence to partition it. Imagine having a large disk with loads of data on C: and the OS goes wrong, you could end up formatting and then restoring hundreds of Gbs of data rather than just a quick 10-20Gb restore of the OS.

I've setup a WAP to allow students to use the internet, I'm using DHCP option 252 WPAD to point to a proxy.pac file and this works ok for Windows clients but Macs won't pick up the file even though I've selected to auto detect the file. If I manually specify the location of the .pac file they work so they can clearly read and understand the file. Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong, I don't know allot about OSX am I missing a setting somewhere? Any pointers appreciated. Thanks. EDIT Ah I might of found an answer! Unfortunatly I don't have an available DNS server in this WLAN which is why I used DHCP any suggestions? http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090711031033128 This might be of some use. http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2309560&tstart=0

I'm having a problem that's driving me mad. For some reason the Office file associations have become mixed up and whenever a user tries to open a .docx, pptx or xlsx file it is set to open with the MS Office 2007 Open xml convertor instead of the correct office program. If I associate the extension with e.g. Word 2003 it opens, launches the convertor and opens it in Word rather than just converting and saving. The problem is that I can't change the association for all users, usually if I want to change an association I change it in the network user profile and it's fixed for everyone this isn't working in this situation it seems to be reset at each logon. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've not had anything to do with Windows Fundamentals can it use wireless networks WPA/2 etc? I wonder how well it would run on atom netbooks. -
Red Dwarf Series 1-8 for £16.97 delivered @ Tesco Entertainment
cookie_monster replied to tech_guy's topic in General Chat
I think series 1 & 2 became cult very quickly I remember it being massive when I was at school I can't comment on the age range appeal then as I was only 10. I don't agree with the "Comedy is not original now" statement completely. I think allot of mainstream comedy is exactly as you said but there's still great new comedy out there it just takes a while for the general population to 'get' it in my opinion. Shows like Nathan Barley or Brass Eye are an example I think you only see genuine new comedy approaches come along once a generation and this is due to a general change in taste and tolerance. Not to mention how hard it is to come up with original ideas in such a media saturated market I wonder how many 'great' ideas are swamped and never make it. Or maybe it's just that most of the writers are taking less recreational LSD these days. -
Red Dwarf Series 1-8 for £16.97 delivered @ Tesco Entertainment
cookie_monster replied to tech_guy's topic in General Chat
Personally I think series 1 & 2 were superb situation comedy that happened to be set in space from 3 onwards it became a Sci-Fi comedy and went downhill, there was still some great episodes but the scripts didn't live upto the quality of series 1 & 2. -
Have you moved the pagefile to another partition? That might help for now but in the long term you need to promote a new DC and then rebuild this one. I wouldn't recommend partition magic on a DC.

[ms office - 2003] Anyone having problems after KB978380?
cookie_monster replied to cookie_monster's topic in Office Software
Well I haven't really got to the bottom of this it seems to of started in the last couple of days and is affecting quite a few clients the only change during that time is this months security updates. The only thing that has solved it is uninstalling and reinstalling the convertor. I did uninstall it and then apply all security updates one at a time rebooting between each one and testing but I was unable to replicate the issue. EDIT On further inspection I noticed that .docx is associated with the Open XML Convertor rather than Word 2003, this means that the convertor tries to convert and save the file rather than open it in Word and for some reason fails. I changed the association and it now converts and opens in Word 2003 . I now need to try and find out why this happened. -
Photos from Bebo to Facebook?
cookie_monster replied to tanya's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
These sites are designed to share pics but you really need to keep the originals I'm pretty sure when you upload them the quality is reduced. They're not there to offer a backup for your pics so they don't offer an easy way to bring them back down expecially if you're trying to move them to a rival site. -
I seem to be all setup now. I'm hosting two WLANs on seperate SSIDs these are seperated by VLAN and the Ruckus will not allow any communication with any other clients or services on our network with the exception of the smoothwall and DHCP. My experience was similar to yours Ruckus was the most straight forward part. Thanks all.

Hi all, our users seem to be having issues opening some .docx files and it seems to be happening since KB978380 but I can't be sure that's the issue. It's not affecting all files so I'm still trying to narrow the issue down. We use Office 2003 SP3 with the Office 2007 convertor. Anyone else having issues? Thanks. EDIT I'll update this. If I double click a .docx file I get an error saying that the file cannot be found but the error points to the correct location, if I right click the file and select open with Word it converts and opens.

Thanks for that Synack, AutoCollage looks interesting I might have a play

Does anyone have any information on how Ruckus security works? I'd basically like to read up on how it separates traffic between VLANs and WLANs. Currently I have a public and private VLAN setup, devices on the public VLAN and private VLAN receive IP addresses in a different range but the core switch will allow routing between the two subnets. I have a Zonedirector and a few Ruckus AP's and have a couple of WLANs set up, the AP's share the same physical cabling to the rest of the network and I've used rules on the Zonedirector and client isolation to seperate traffic. I'm wondering exactly how it separates the traffic does the Zonedirector tell each AP what IP's are available to devices and then it refuses to allow clients to forward traffic to that range of IP's. At the moment the only IP that clients in the public WLAN can see is the smoothwall (proxy not firewall) and the core switch will forward DHCP requests across to the other subnet. I'm basically wondering how robust this method of traffic separation is does it just use VLANs to separate or do the zonedirector and APs act more like a firewall by banning certain routes IPs and ports? Thanks for any info.

Right well I've setup some rules on the guest VLAN that doesn't allow anything to connect to my private LAN except for the smoothwall, the important part is to get the rules in the right order so the allowed IP comes first in the list and then straight after that the banned subnets (I'm pretty sure that's right, shout up if anyone knows better) I set No authentication on the guest WLAN and they can't connect to anything or ping anything until they agree to the AUP after that they can ping the smoothwall and pick up proxy settings, I can't ping any other wireless clients on the same subnet or any address' in any other subnet. I think I'm in bussiness

Yes I was looking at that, I wonder if you can then enable a couple of IP's? I need to sit down with the manual I think

Hi all, we’ve just installed a few Ruckus AP’s and a ZD 1000 and I’m looking at options, it’s currently in use with some wireless netbooks so I can’t do too much experimenting. I have 2 WLANs setup one is on our private LAN and one is going to be open, I’d like the open one to be banned from seeing any IP’s on my private LAN. At the moment the private and public LAN are on two separate VLAN’s and each have a separate IP range, as I need to allow DHCP forwarding and access to the smoothwall and a web server on the private LAN the two VLANs are routable through the core switch. How can I use the Ruckus ZD to block access to the private LAN IP range except for a couple of IPs. Alternatively does anyone else have a better way to manage this type of setup with Ruckus? Wireless client isolation maybe? Thanks.

Of course if you use BT already you could offer the FON service to people other providers also offer this and it's what it's designed for. BT | FON

Print Credits, how mean are you.
cookie_monster replied to K.C.Leblanc's topic in How do you do....it?
We do the same here but I still think it works as if a student is printing loads then it comes to our attention and we can actually charge them for more if they're shown to be wasteful on multiple occasions. It also prevents anyone printing hundreds of pages maliciously or as a 'joke' on someone else’s account when they aren't looking etc We also prevent staff printing more than 5 copies of a document to stop them using our printers instead of the photo copier when preparing resources. -
You could bridge 2 AP's the one at the holiday let end can act as an AP as well as part of the bridge this might cost less than installing a new line. I think you can have multiple SSIDs so your guests will use different encryption to the house. Mcafee Kill Windows XP...
cookie_monster replied to Gatt's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
BBC News - Security update hits Window PCs Cunninghams eh, one of their engineers bought conficker in on a USB drive (late last year not during the initial outbreak) fortunatly we were patched but a new machine that he was working on with admin rights was infected and a couple of unpatched test machines got it as well. I only noticed when one of the DC's started running slow and I investigated that. -

No Clients connecting to WSUS
cookie_monster replied to Tricky_Dicky's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Hahaha I've had a similar problem. I have 500 clients on my WSUS server but 3-4 will not appear no matter what I try I've deleted the account and ran a selection of scripts and fixes I've even rebuilt them (not imaged). They appear but show as not yet reported and that's it, they even did the same after I introduced a new WSUS server to replace the old one. The odd thing is that they download their updates from WSUS every month but they never report in...wierd -
