Thanks guys. I'm not sure what the setup will be yet i'll have a new layer 3 core switch soon and some Ruckus kit, I now need to work out how best to use it. That's about where I am.

Another first time poster with 'massive' issues contrary to most of the thread!!!

Can someone tell me if Ruckus can manage it's own VLAN's independent of our switches. I'm trying to plan our new network layout which will be layer 3, I know that Ruckus can handle VLAN's I just don't know if that's in conjunction with your regular LAN switches or if it manages it's own. I essentially want a wireless VLAN that can see our servers and one that can only see our Smoothwall so students can access the internet from their own equipment but not see the rest of the LAN. Can Ruckus do that regardless of the capabilities of our LAN switches. Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

No problem. It's made a big difference to our older clients even bigger than I thought it would, in fact it's made a difference on the core2 boxes as well.

I use a simple VB script that logs to an access Db (currently) it logs user logon and logoff, it works very well and it's free and simple. On Error Resume Next Dim adoCn Dim adoRs Dim network Dim user Dim compname Dim strSQLInsert Dim WshShell ' <--- New Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") ' <--- New Set network = CreateObject("Wscript.Network") user = network.username compname = network.computername Set adoCn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") adoCn.Open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & _ "Data Source=\\server\logs$\students.mdb" 'CHANGE THIS BIT 'Check the connection opened ok If Err.Number <> 0 Then Call ErrHandler End If ' ********************* NEW BIT ******************* 'Citrix specific section if UCase(Left(compname, 4) = "CITR") then compname = UCase(WshShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%CLIENTNAME%")) end if ' ************************************************** strSQLInsert = "INSERT INTO [Log On] ([date], [time], [user], compname) " & _ "VALUES ('" & Date & "', '" & Time & "', '" & user & "', '" & compname & "')" adoCn.Execute strSQLInsert, , 8 'Check the data was inserted OK If Err.Number <> 0 Then Call ErrHandler End If adoCn.Close Set adoCn = Nothing Set network = Nothing Sub ErrHandler() Dim fso, f Const ForReading = 1, ForWriting = 2, ForAppending = 8 Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Set f = fso.OpenTextFile("\\server\logs$\" & LogError & ".txt" , ForAppending, True) f.WriteLine Date & ", " & Time & ", " & user & ", " & compname & ", " & Chr(34) & Err.Description & Chr(34) f.Close Set fso = nothing Err.Clear End Sub I'm not a great coder

Since I set all of the exceptions about three months ago my DC hasn't frozen up at all on V4.0.474.0 You need to set every exclusion that I posted on the last page and follow all of the ESET recommendations as well, limiting scanned extensions turning off email scanning etc. http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2144

The features look ok but I'm not sure that it's anything that can't be achieved for free and in conjunction with a good password policy and staff training i.e training them to take care when entering their password, we also have a good password policy that forces them to change it frequently. I'm sure some schools have that kind of money but I couldn't justify the cost myself, we don't have enough PC's to be restricting them to either staff or students (except for office PC's of course) Thanks.

What if a teacher want's to log on to the machine? Our staff frequently use class PC's.

I read an article a few months ago showing hotmail to be more reliable than gmail (if I find it i'll post it), I think they used netcraft logs or something to prove it. There wasn't alot in it TBH but i've always been satisfied with my hotmail I remeber the 2005 incident and today I really can't remember another incident how much can you expect from a free service?

Same problem I’ve had with similar solutions then, let us know how you get on cheers.

Mine changed a while ago as well but not had an issue since.

What happens if a station crashes and the logoff script doesn't run?
-
We make 'their' logon 'their' responsability in the AUP that they and their parents sign, if they disclose this and there are issues they are directly responsible and punished accordingly. How does limiting multiple sessions prevent a student gaining access to a staff password and logging on as the member of staff? This would only prevent them logging on at the same time as the member of staff which doesn't solve the issue of the student knowing the password. You can use Gencontrol or VNC to log off a remote user both are GPL and free, most schools us a remote control app e.g. NetSupport anyway. We don't allow students to lock their station as they only use shared terminals so this isn't an issue.

I wonder if it will turn out to be a hoax, the road is wet but there's no tyre smoke or sparks from metal.
-
Yep i remember that, it's probably a DNS or routing change that's confused the situation.
-
Is it really such a big problem? We just pick them up as and when it's a problem, we track users using an access Db so we can tell if someone was logged on in more than one location we can then cross reference this on the IP cameras. It's not something that we see as a big issue.

Could be road rage but on the motorway I bet you wouldn't hear it and with the weight and amount of torque of the truck I bet they wouldn't even notice the extra weight of a small car.

Someone sent me an email about 20 mins ago and it's still not arrived yet.

Imagine the drivers shock if someone climbed out of the sunroof and appeared in front of the windscreen but talk about BROWN alert

GPO - Only allow programs in C:\program files to run
cookie_monster replied to Dominic's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
We use a software restriction whitelist for students it's a user GPO so it's quite easy to setup and test on an OU that won't affect all users to start with. Below is a few exclusions that you will need, I can post you our full list when I get change. This kills exes on USB dead -
Ours isn't all that quick but it's backing up 350Gb in 12 hours but that's including the verify. 1Gb link to tape library. Just looked and the verify takes approx 2-3 hours.

No we did exactly the same until recently. As that's the location on the domain default profile any domain computer will pick that up. Delete them at bootup and lockdown with GP (as you are doing) and you'll have no issues.

Server 2008R2 DCs and non-Windows clients
cookie_monster replied to Ric_'s topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
We had to enable that setting when we moved to 2008 DC's "I think" it was to allow XP WDS clients join the domain using NetJoinDomain. It's been set ever since with no issues. It does of course lower the level of required encryption, this shouldn't be a massive issue on a single secure firewalled LAN.
