  1. I'm helping a friend buy a notebook and a few that they like come with Win7 64bit, i'm a bit worried about compatibility issues that they might run into. Opinions from all of you running 64bit Windows 7? While were at it anyone bought a new notebook recently in the £400-£600 range that would care to make a recommendation Thanks.
  2. @ pwds & ricki, are you both using this script? Ok i'm going to keep an eye on it, it seems to be not deleting what it terms 'orphaned directories'. I'm not sure if these are ones where it can't find a corresponding SID or not, i've set it to delete profiles that are more than one day old so we'll see tomorrow. Update: Ok I checked the log again this morning and it is deleting profiles older than the date I set but for some reason it skips what it considers to be an ‘Orphaned Profile Directory’. I’m not sure why that is perhaps the first time it ran it didn’t find a reghive entry for it. The log lists these profiles as being deleted but they never go, I’m not that bothered if from now on it keeps deleting profiles that are older than 2 days.
  3. I'm running it as a startup script so it should run as system. I have another script that just deletes every profile other than admin etc and that works i'm assigning them the same way so i'm sure i've got that set right.
  4. Is anyone using the Shonk Delete Profiles Script v1.9? I've been trying it and every part seems to work well except the delete part (shame that). I've set it to log and it runs through the reghives then selects profiles that can be deleted it then says "Deleting Orphaned Profile Directory: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME" in the log but when I check the folder is still there. I can manually delete the folder so it doesn't seem to be a permissions issue.
  5. Derbyshire haven't been done yet but every council have to go under a review to try to align pay so positions are paid the same nationwide, it's also to give some positions that have been traditionally low paid an increase. I think that's what it's all about anyway. Derbyshire County Council - Single Status Currently they say 'Single Status does not apply to Teachers, schools employed employees and Soulbury and Youth Workers.' but that might change.
  6. Agreed we've been using open source for infrastructure for a while now but we're still finding it hard to move to Open Office etc.
  7. The script sounds handy i was thinking about something like that here for network PC's. The notebooks only have a few apps on so I don't think it's worth it at the moment. WSUS bandwidth is controlled by BITS so the settings are in Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - Network - Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Thanks. EDIT This isn't really usefull to me in this situation but Peer caching looks very handy for sites with slow links between clients and their WSUS servers, seperat blocks over a wireless bridge etc. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc720428(WS.10).aspx
  8. I've setup robocopy to only copy changes from the server at bootup so now all user profiles are local this negated the disappearing icon issue anyway thanks. WSUS seems to be working ok at the moment but I haven't had any monster updates yet, I can always plug them into the LAN once a month if necessary but i've a feeling BITS will cope. We'll see. Thanks.
  9. Interesting, is that post single status review as well?
  10. I'll keep my eyes peeled as we're intereste in Live@edu here but haven't had time to look into it yet.
  11. I think i've just sorted it. The %logonserver% variable doesn't seem to work in a startup script I put a server name in and it runs file now. EDIT Ah i've remembered now. \\domainname\netlogon works and it picks a random DC
  12. I'm having a play with the Shonk script at the moment but I can't get it to run as a startup script, i've got a .bat file in netlogon along with the .vb file. I can run it by pasting the command in to the cmd prompt or by double clicking it. This is the command that i'm running. Should I need to call it from a .bat file or am I barking up the wrong tree? cscript.exe %logonserver%\NETLOGON\DeleteProfiles.vbs /E root, libraryuser /D 2 /R /L C:\delprof.log Thanks. p.s I know i've got the read only switch set
  13. It is that as well.
  14. Does this help? http://www.microsoft.com/liveatedu/single-sign-on.aspx?locale=en-US&country=US http://liveedusso.codeplex.com/
  15. Yes that would be the iceing on the cake for me. Currently user folders are shared through an iSCSI connection that's hosted by a Windows server so we can use quotas effectively. TBH the performance is fine for those needs if they need any fast file space I can setup a CIFS share directly on the SAN. In future though it would be nice to have this feature so home folders could be shared directly from the SAN.
  16. Are you replacing a server? Last time I needed to do something similar I demoted the DC and made it a fileserver I then replaced the DC with a new one. It seemed easier that renaming which can cause massive issues. If you mapped drives with logon scripts it should be very easy to change the paths or you can just select multiple users in AD and change it that way with the %username% variable. Assuming it's their home folder that you're changing.
  17. Is there an option to set delprof to log what it's done?
  18. Ok just thought i'd post an update. So far my netbooks seem to be working well over wireless, i've set GPO to wait for the network which it does then i've used robocopy to move desktops to the C: drive, I did try redirected desktops to the server using folder redirection but any interuption and the icons would go and not return without loging off. Next...anyone know how well WSUS works over wireless?
  19. Yep i've got a whole box of Win98 licences as well shame DOS6 disks don't count
  20. I think i've still got the win95 floppy disk install somewhere at work, all 25 of them Oh the pain of rebuilding a PC and then having to download things like java, flash and adobe reader over a 28/56k modem. Not to mention windows updates
  21. Oh yeh I love opening up the old PC's that we have in the IT museum, cards rising like skyscrapers all over the place Apologies for hijacking your thread theeldergeek
  22. Clamping on a 10Base-T transceiver
  23. Ahh Netbeui I have fond memories, no real configuration and pretty damn fast it really didn't scale very well though, more chatty than Alan Carr As for Token Ring the council still use it. It's getting to be a pain apparently.
  24. There's a couple of hidden ones like 'Network Service' and another I think.
  25. Is there some super new boot screen for 7? On my NC10 I just see what I thought was the 7 boot screen, black with a swirly thing.
