Hi, Go easy as its first time I've used vlans. Just setting up a separate vlan for the iPads to go out to the internet. All setup on the UTM no problem. On the core switch, I can plug in a wifi box, (tag it on the iPad vlan) and the clients get the iPad range of IP addresses. Make it not a member and it doesn't work, which is how it should be. I've tagged the 4 uplink ports from the other switches. My question is, without breaking it, do I also tag the uplink port on the edge switch? When I tried it in testing, it then made it not a member of the default vlan which meant normal computers couldn't uplink from it. They are HP 1920. Do I need to set the port type as hybrid / trunk as well? And, can you just tag every port on every switch on each vlan or is that not good practice? Would save me finding out which port each wifi point is plugged into

Sophos UTM. Either SG or XG. Can also get a cloud based one from certain companies so you just need a small XG at each site and do centralised filtering -
Remind me in the morning I’ll dig out my notes. We have this installed and had to put exceptions in on our Sophos Utm to get it working.

We use Netsupport DNA power management feature to shut down PCs. Does a great job even on computers that are off-site. We are looking at getting our HP8200s to boot on LAN in bios so will use DNA to boot them up as well.

Hi, We are in the process of doing due diligence on a school. At present they are a local authority school and their licenses are "Select licenses and perpectual". The licenses are supplied via the LA. What happens whey they join our trust, does the school retain the licenses? Thanks

Hi, I've made a custom start screen that worked on 1511. Exported etc fine. I updated the PC to 1703 so make sure it works on there. When I tried to export I now get an error. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> export-startlayout -path C:\start\start.xml export-startlayout : Unspecified error Thrown exception in StartTileData.dll At line:1 char:1 + export-startlayout -path C:\start\start.xml + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: ( [Export-StartLayout], COMException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException,Microsoft.Windows.StartLayout.Commands.Expor tStartLayoutCommand

I have been fortunate to get access to 4.5 a day early and it looks amazing. Not had chance to fully test all the features as yet but some cool features on first inspection include: Bookmarks feature on departments you frequently use. Activity monitor (excellent) CPU / Memory performance in explorer view. Logon control (no reason to have userlock anymore) I'll report back after further use over the next few days but I must say it is great work once again from the NetSupport team but have listened to what the customers want. Don't forget to contact NetSupport if you feel there is a feature you would like to see

Netsupport DNA Network Unplugged
karldenton replied to Theldron's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Glad Al sorted you out. Net support DNA is a great piece of kit. I am still learning about things it does and we've had it a fair while. Support is brilliant so anything you are stuck on or unsure of give them a shout and they are more than happy to help, even if it turns out to be a server issue such as TCP/IP pipes disabled they'll help you get it working. -
Everyone full control

Hi We have just moved our files over to another server and I've got a problem with folder redirection. The pupils desktop are all redirected to the same shared desktop. This is just a share on the server. The policy isn't applying. The error in event log is "the security id may not be assigned as the owner of this object". The owner was the domain admin but I've changed it to the pupils group as a test. Pupils group has full control as a test but still got the error. Any ideas please? Thanks

Find a device with IP address x.x.x.x
karldenton replied to timbo343's topic in How do you do....it?
We have a few such as WW07389707.europe.bmw.corp Like Chris says these are refurb machines and BWM might be the original owners -
As above, like Joanne I deploy it via Discovery and Deploy wizard. The only time we have had issues is if we installed netsupport first and then cloned the HDD onto another PC. It then replaces it in the console and you have to do the registry hack mentioned. Do it via Discovery and Deploy and it should work fine

Does it not work if you use GP to delete all printers on logon then add the printers again?
