Any chance of changing this to a configurable AD Group? It can even be one you hardcode in if easier - just so that its not Domain Admins (I would like some of the office staff to be able to do it too)... something like Booking Admins - and we would need to create that group... Ta

A bit of a dense question.... with the Room Bookings system, everything was fine until I set about removing me and my team from Domain Admins. Now - we arent Admins of it, and cant book for others/remove bookings. Where was that controlled from again? Ta muchly

What issues are you finding with WMM... not got any problem with it for us and we have it on Win 7 with mapped home and shared drives; and redirected app data.

AFAIK, Office Web Apps come under your Sharepoint Licencing, and I think you need to be Enterprise to have the full functionality. Speak to your reseller who will definately be able to confirm.

I did wonder when they would ge that out the door. The old version was starting to look at bit dated and was a absolute pita to install.

Ive had this before. See my blog for the reg fixes you need. There is a Windows Update out there (or a combo) which breaks folder redirection and it is a pig! Apply this reg fix to your machines (i use gpo to do this, as well as including the fix in my build too)...

Ive tried dropping a machine all the way out back to the computers OU so all it gets is essentially the Default Domain Policy - which is unchanged. Im suspecting a dodgy update somewhere - much like the one which broke folder redirection a while back. All Windows 7 systems are affected by the issue. XP is unaffected. The shutdown scripts are the same across OS - and dont do anything significant which is why I tried disabling to see if there was a change in behaviour. Driving me nuts, and not doing my Windows 7 push many favours Comforting to know Im not alone on this issue tho... MSFT bods, where are you!

Odd, Ive had this happen a few times today too - and not got anywhere with finding out the cause. Something fishy is going on....

Yep, have both shutdown and logoff scripts. Will post up the details later on (well tomorrow as cant do it right now from home)... The issue exists on all the Win 7 machines on site. Mixture of hardware - so i think i can rule out drivers which was my other thought. Will also post up the verbose log tomorrow. Ta

A bizzare one which I cant seem to find anything useful about. I know there are a fair few of you using Windows 7 out there now and I was wondering if any of you have seen the following problem... which has only recently appeared. On shutdown, the machine appears to hang taking a very long time. So, we enabled Verbose mode to try and see what on earth was going on. It is hanging on "Shutting down Group Policy Client service". Any ideas? Startup seems normal, although we do get the occasional slow startup too - but the shutdown is constant. DNS seems normal, Startup/Shutdown scripts seem normal - I cant figure it out! Help..!

As Ric says really. We use a local folder C:\Environment which contains the Start Menu and Desktop icons we want to use. Redirection is used to force these locations to be used for users, and periodically we can push updates to the folders for new installs etc.

I use some scripting to see if the machine is already known to SCCM. If its not, then a prompt for name is shown. If it is know, then SCCM manages the domain add and the ad account which is already there is reused. SCCM uses a secondary database to monitor machine names - which is distinct from AD. really a bit of a "ditto" to the above. Running Exchange 2007/2010 on Server 2008 / R2 domains or upgrading the functional level of the domain should have no impact. However, I did find that some of the search and powershell cmdlets didnt work after, so just to be sure, run a /preparead from your Exchange media. Makes sure the Schema extensions are still there. secondly, i dont recommend doing an in-place upgrade to the os on which Exchange is installed. Prepare a new server with the desired os, install exchange, move mailboxes etc and rebuild/upgrade server (note - make sure you uninstall exchange first!).

Microsoft Recently released a Service Pack for Windows 7 and it has worked fine until it has been made available via WSUS/Windows Updates for Automatic Install. It has been known to cause a few problems where the system has halted upon startup with a Fatal Error as shown below: Fatal Error C0000034 applying update operation (Update 282 of 103814) Many people have turned to re-building the system but there is a fix to getting the system back up and running and it is as follows: 1) When your computer starts up, choose the option "Launch Startup Repair" 2) When the Startup repair starts, click cancel. 3) After you click cancel it will show a box. Click "Don't Send" 4) Click the link "View advanced options for recovery and support 5) You may be asked to authenticate as the local administrator 6) In the new window click Command Prompt at the bottom. 7) In Command Prompt type this and press enter: %windir%\system32\notepad.exe Notepad will open. In notepad go to File-->Open. 9) Change the type of files notepad views from .txt to All Files 10) Now in Notepad, go to C:\Windows\winsxs\ (or whichever drive Windows is installed on) 11) In that folder, find pending.xml and make a copy of it 12) Now open the original pending.xml (It may take a short time to open as the file is fairly big, also editing you may find the process a bit slow but be patient) 13) Press CNTRL+F and search for the following exactly: 0000000000000000.cdf-ms 14) Delete the following text (you will find it may appear a bit different on your file) <Checkpoint/> <DeleteFile path="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_000000000000000 0.cdf-ms"/> <MoveFile source="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\e56 db1db48d4cb0199440000b01de419._0000000000000000.cd f-ms" destination="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_00000000 00000000.cdf-ms"/> Your PC might not have all 3 sections of code (<Checkpoint>, <DeleteFile>, <MoveFile>). Just make sure you delete section "Checkpoint" and whatever other sections have "000000000000000.cdf-ms". They will be right next to eachother. 15. Save the file, close notepad, close command prompt, restart your computer. Once your computer starts up, do a normal startup (it may stall for 5-10 minutes at the "starting windows" screen, but leave it going) and the Service Pack will install some more stuff and restart a few times and then everything should be working! For some people, it reverts everything and cancels the service pack installation. For other people, the service pack installation completes. Either result is fine. Thanks to EduTech for the original post, but I was also in the middle of writing this having come across it and fixing it last night too!!

Yep - its to do with the Messenger integration in the Windows Live services (SkyDrive, Hotmail etc). Caused big issues for us...

Ok, something we are just about to implement - Password Policies for Staff. However, I hear you cry, you can only have one policy per domain - the "Default Domain Policy GPO". Yes - pre Server 2008 that is true... With Windows Server 2008 you will now be able to define different password account lockout policies within the same domain. Previously this was not possible and this was also one of the reasons many of our customers implemented multiple domains in their forest. With Fine-Grained Password Policies you can assign different policies to users (individually if you want) or groups. Its in there, but minus a GUI to configure this and you need to use the ADSIedit to create, manage and set the password policies. This is a bit of a pain, as its not the most friendly of beasts - and a licence to break things if you arent careful. If you want to go play the ADSI way, Kurt Roggen has blogged on it HERE. Me on the other hand, would rather not. There are some community released nifty tools where you can manage the policies through a GUI, command-line or even by using PowerShell. Some of the best...
