I think they were meaning downgrade your Win8 machines to Win7. On your Q re registry settings to XP machines, yes you need the preferences pack.

Yep, this is what I do. Another trick is a combo of the first post. Add the old app into SCCM, and publish an uninstall task sequence; or create a task sequence which includes the uninstall with an "allow to fail" in the TS step followed by your new install step. This way, machines without the app to uninstall wont bomb out. I did this with Smart Notebook I remember, where some machines ended up with 2010 version from our previous 2007 SCCM implementation; and refused to come across properly.

Similar when I took over at the Academy. Laptops which were an array of different setups, including some standalone. Now, all domain...bitlockered for when they take them offsite, and with offline files. That way, no faffing with different logon details etc.

I forgot to add, that the VMs are "read only" - they are essentially Live images, which exist on all machines - so once closed - any "fiddling" is lost. It means a completely flexible environment...they key was explaining the importance of saving to their home area!!! I likewise understand the concerns...but we have to work a solution that keeps everyone happy. Part of the solution should include educating the students why it is set up in this way.

Virtual machines is how Ive managed this one. For us, we have built a Linux VM based on SLAX, which has loads of great programming utilities in it. In our case it was Python and Scratch among others. I read you need VB, but Im sure there must be some utils for it - or use an XP VM. Weve used VirtualBox, which has no network connection, but uses and allows access to the mapped U:\ (Home Drive) of the logged on user. Hey presto - file access and storage. They can write and run the code in the VM, save to their area, but not run the code from the normal network. I hope this makes sense.

Hi All Long time no post, and new into the Mac side of things on here..., though I have managed Macs on systems before. The background - we now have 25 macs on our system, managed by Centrify. All is good - except for the broken kerberos in Safari with our proxy. Therefore, we have swapped to Firefox, which once configured works fine. Now - ive seen bits and pieces about adding a .cfg to the Package Content, and editting/adding .js files Configuring Firefox for Deployment But, no joy. It either wont launch anymore saying error in the package (in the case of the consumer release); or it just doesnt apply anything (in the esr release). Any ideas on how I can get a centralised config - since it doesnt play by plist files either! We do have ARD, so once Ive got the package content right, we can through it out with that. Thanks in advance
