Suggested alternative design: Can you tell we don't have photoshop here?

Always found Acer to be pretty reliable myself... Just on the times they do fail, their warranty support is shockingly bad! Don't really NEED it for work, just choose to use it in this way... Hence I don't get one supplied.

So my aging (4/5 YO) Acer Aspire 5750 is starting to run slow. It's on Win10, has 4GB RAM and a Dual Core CPU... I assumed it was to due with Win10 as I did an upgrade as appose to a clean install, but after wiping it and starting again it would appear not - It seems the HDD is possibly failing. I don't use the laptop for much - mainly at work for emails, RDPing into servers and basic web browsing, so the spec should be able to handle everything I do on there. My dilemma is this - do I upgrade to a new laptop, or just bang an new drive in it? (Would an SSD be worthwhile on my hardware?)

Am I missing something? Why on earth would they need that? Or at least, what's their excuse?

Not taking sides here, but wouldn't this increase more likely be to do with the fact that technology has improved, meaning we're now able to detect it more reliably than we could in the past?

Hi All, Not convinced there's a way round this, but has anyone found a way / can anyone think of a way, that we'd be able to bulk register Fujitsu warranties? Their warranty site is: https://ts.fujitsu.com/supportpack/ As you'll see, you pick your language, click next, fill in your warranty package number, click next, fill in your address and contact details, click next and then it's done. This is fine, until you have 120 computers to do. And supporting multiple schools, this does at times happen during holidays. Anyone any ideas? My colleague attempted to script it, and asked them for their API, but they said no...

No and no From what I've read its only really achievable with a mac, but it'd be cheaper to buy am airprint enabled printer I think.

Have you tried disabling impero altogether from a PC just to be doubly sure that's the cause? I'm sure that's one of the first things their support will ask...?

Does anyone have anything in place to allow their users to print from their iPads to their normal network printers shared from the server? I've had a user ask if this is possible, and looking about I've found various solutions for this, although they either seem to be old posts that worked with earlier versions of iOS, or the sites look a bit dodgy (maybe I'm too cynical). Preferably looking for a free solution, or at least one that offers a free trial, so we can test it out first - but if anyone can recommend a solution that'd be great! Cheers

Hi All, At my sites, we have a shared drive that staff have Modify permissions on and students only have read. I'm having more and more staff ask to give students the same permissions as staff to student shared - what are your thoughts? My initial thoughts are "no chance" - but then I thought, maybe just give them write access rather than modify, so they can't delete anything, but all that does is end up with kids saving 10 different versions of the same files as they can't modify the one they created. As they're primary schools, I can't see any issues with kids maliciously deleting one another work, but that doesn't stop it being accidental. Staff do have access to the student's home directories so they can view work etc, but the staff are asking to be able to have a full class save to the same folder, to then allow them to view each others work in certain cases. Any thoughts?

Hi All, I'm dabbling with PHP, and am currently trying to put an inventory together. It's not going to be used properly by anyone, it's just more a way of me learning something new at the moment. Odd - but to be honest, we've installed hundreds of this particular model of laptops across various schools and these particular 15 were the only ones we had this issue with. Even a further 15 we purchased a few months later at the same school (which had the exact same image put on them) didn't suffer from this problem... Never experienced the other issue you mentioned however.

Its been about a year - I thought id updated this thread to say I'd sorted it to be honest. Sorry!

I found in the end that Fast Boot in the BIOS was causing this... I just disabled it, and they've been fine since.

I second the Remote Assistance idea ^ Teamviewer seems a costly solution when there's something already in the OS.

Tried the LNMP suggestion already - no such luck The HPUPD also aren't any use as the model is an MFP... and the HPUPD only cover printing don't they? It's a weird one, as it was worked fine at one point then just not any more... No new installs / updates done during the time it stopped working either.

We have a user who has a standalone USB printer connected to her machine, it's a HP Officejet 8500A Pro. After a lot of investigation and having the problem ongoing for weeks, it appears the drivers for this device are causing the network printers to show as offline, unless we restart the spooler after login. I've tried re-installing the drivers, including older and newer versions to no avail. Since the printer is out of warranty, HP offer no help - I'm just wondering if anyone has had similar/the same issues and can offer any help to a solution, other than setting the spooler to restart at logon?
