If the server is down they will be complaining of more than just Lexia being not available plus I'd have more to worry about than just Lexia! Anyway running from a server for us is not an issue speed on load etc as we only can have 5 concurrent users at any one time on Lexia. Did load it on some PC's for the trial but took a while on our network to download and we do not re-image all PC's that regularily (primary school). Worked OK and not that much quicker if any on loading up than from the server, anyway the issue was that our proxt to get the net was changed so that meant I had to go to each PC and edit/change the setting, from the server its only once. Lexia tech support do say it is reccomended from a local install but when pushed did admit that some schools do run it accross the network and they just warned to be aware that they would not help with problmes running over a network. The product being sold to schools should be designed to run over a network especially one that is required everywhere.

Also found out that it does not like running from a UNC path to the server and needed a mapped drive letter to the location, worked fine then. Hope thats of help to someone.

Had a similar issue today with netbooks connecting to the access point thgen disconnecting and so on, untill it dawned on me the key was wrong...why?...only had num lock on and I though I was typing the correct key but because it was hidden what was being typed was not the correct key! No light on netbook to show num lock was on, light to show caps lock but not num lock! KerChing! Turned num lock off in bios and away we went. Just though I'd share that, one to check there if you're having problems connecting.

As per the title, getting more and more requests to have Youtube videos for lessons now that they are trying to teach a themed section of work. I can understand their requests (needed some myself for the kids, but fortunately techy enough to download the ones I wanted and convert them). I know from reading on here some secondaries have it unblocked but just wondering about primaries? I can have it unblocked but only on a school basis not on a per group of users basis.

Got to that time of year where we update the pupils etc in Librarian, usually just use the report in SIMS that exports the data automatically to a floppy drive but now the admin PC's don't have a floppy drive. Has this routine been updated to export to a USB drive etc now, can't check on the website as the school have decided to stop paying for support. If it has can anyone send me a copy of the report thats run?

Ah! Thats why I couldn't get it to work at first then! Brilliant!

Why would you have to set the exe's to read only? Did try running it from the network but didnt have pupil logon details to check if there were any problems once more than one was logged in. Looks like it could be an easier job than I thought as I have the thing set up, just need a shortcut now :-)

Yes, I would be very much interested on how to run it over a network. Made the mistake of using the msi over the wireless link oops! Just got it installed on one PC then copied the installed folder to the server, now I just copy the folder to whichever PC needs it (when they finally decide where they want it!). Its expensive so we have only bought five licences so I've been told. Anyone know if thats five users, pc installs or what? They don't seen to really know. Did install it on a few PC's for the trial but then the LA chnaged the proxy setting and as thats held on an ini file on each PC it kind of scuppered the trial a bit. Never got chance to change he setting so the program does not work on those. Why they can't have designed it to be fully online I dont know.

Sever spec influencing logon times?
TechSupp replied to TechSupp's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
We used the memory scanner but its not always accurate, especially for servers. It won't suggest any for one of the other schools NEC servers. All the switches are 100Mb, yes the profiles can be an issue, all children on mandatory and not bad logons, staff on roaming but that may be changed if they carry on as they are. Had logon problems on Wednesday only to find some teachers had dumped music/photos etc ending up with profiles of the 1.6Gb region!!!! Why is it so difficult for them to file stuff in their own user area! -
Sever spec influencing logon times?
TechSupp replied to TechSupp's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
We are a primary and its about 4/5 years old and the times comming up for replacement if there is any money as usual. Yes its 2003 with possibility of 60 approx being connected at any one time with a peak of about 30 (the suite connecting at once)...and yes I did say 512Mb and its a 100mb network. Did order 2Gb of extra memory but had to return it after it was incorrectly ordered this summer. Its a Fujitsu Siemens econnel 50 server and getting the correct memory seems difficult to identify the correct type. Had same problem when suppliers did a similar one at another school. In one of the other schools I did upgrade to 2Gb and a new HD for more room, but that in some ways is worse as we are running out of space on the OS drive and some of the data areas! -
A simple question really, our server is a P4 3Ghz with 512Mb Ram, would increasing the memory have any perceivable impact on logon times when a class logs on? Would it benefit me at all? Just thinking about where to go next with improvements and that thought just popped into my head as they often do!

Had this ourselves and we got it reapired under warranty, they reported it as being a "bulb fault" what ever that means.

They are TFTs. Can see the screen is on or has power to it not just from the light on the on button but that the screen changes from a deep black to a lighter black when the power is switched on. Cant replicate the problem on demand unfortunately so Ican see this being a frustrating one as I'm only at that school .5 days a week. Will have to check if its down to one make of screen or not as we have three makes in there.

Had a strange on today, the ICT suite had been dismantled due to work being done in the suite area and we put it all back together last week. There had been no problems before the summer break, no work done on the PC's or server but now we have connected them back together and odd ones have now while a child was working on it the screen went blank, PC still on, power still on to the monitor but no response from keyboard or mouse, as though it had gone to sleep but could not seem to wake it up. Had to shut them down, loosing kids work and it booted up into windows as normal! Never had this before and not sure what it is or how to get around it? Any ideas? Looked at the power settings on the PC and they are set to all being on always.

From my own experience, I would stay away from Talk Talk, they have good deals and may provide a reasonable product but as for trying to get hold of anyone via a phone to sort a problem, no chance! Took me about two months to get shut of them. Did the same to my Dad as well.

Been running PaperCut Print report software (free version) for a while now, much to teachers disgust :-) but now need to clear alot of the old report files it creates and update the web page it uses to access them. Whats the easiest way to do this without crippling PaperCut, if I just delete the files they are still listed on the web page. Must be an easy way just can't seem to find it!

Just looking at creating a new default user profile and following the info on here to do so. Looking at the existing profiles the Application Data folder seems to be the largets culprit as to the size of a profile. What advice would you give to reduce this issue (mainly for teachers roaming profiles, pupils have mandatory, although I may put them on the new default mandatory if it would make things quicker!)

I'm administrator and I have already deleted some files from the subfolder but the folder just won't go. It does not say I do not have permission to delete, just that the file or folder does not exist!

Got a folder in a pupil area that I want to remove but it just tells me that it cannot read from the source file or disk! It has a space at the end of the folder name (its a sub folder of the childs name). Tried renaming it but no joy and can't delete it. Any Suggestions? I can remane the childs folder just not the specific sub folder. Just managed to move the whole folder structure to another folder out of the way by dragging it but still can't delete it, so now not an urgent problem but would like to solve it.
