  2. soooo coool There are a whole of self build projects on the web for this type of thing but for the right price I buy a built one like that.
  3. I use a Linux box with EHCP (Easy Hosting Control Panel | for Ubuntu and alikes...- Free Fast Opensource web hosting control panel for your server **) installed. The tutors can easily setup sub folders as needed with FTP and mysql. So the student gets students.school.ac.uk/jbloggs the students install wordpress or what ever cms they are working with themselves as part of the lesson plan.
  4. have you confirmed that php is set up correctly. if you remove all the moodle files and just put in a simple index.php does that load correctly. if not try with an index.htm file
  5. moodle 2 will run on php 5.3.2 as it's minium. As for when I upgrade tend to do it every half term or term break although I will do it sooner if I'm having a specific problem that I know is solved in the weekly release. I also use git for the all the upgrades which makes life much simpler and means that deploying from my dev server to live server is childs play. My own moodle it pretty complex which lots of module and custom stuff. We host a very simple moodle for an external company and their upgrades are directly via git.

There is a way of doing it via SSH. Think you just need to install libssh2-php and the (s)ftp option becomes available Update WordPress plugins via sftp (ssh) | Super Nerdy Cool WordPress › SSH SFTP Updater Support « WordPress Plugins

  16. Why US only? We're going Office 365 in the summer and this could be a great addition
  17. take a look at proxmox https://www.proxmox.com/
  18. we currently run with 8 gig ram 4 cores at 2.5 Ghz 300 gig disk space Ubuntu server 12.04 APC caching This is a VM running atop Vmware ESX We used to run two windows based vms - one for database and one for Apache also on the vmware server. however the single Ubuntu VM has given use much better performance
  19. Let them know that they can just ignore the other fields. Then just focus on the fields you actually need to use and make sure they are documented and clear presented to the tutors. Many of our tutors here barely scratch the surface of Moodle and it's often the students that help drive them. Be prepared to help them set up their assignments and remind them that one of the great things about Moodle is once you've got it setup in year one, then in year two everything is in and ready to go.
  20. but then most android and ios apps aren't trying to do something as needful complicated. It has both of these. When you had an assignment here is a description filed. You can put the assignment brief in there. If the assignment is more complicated then you type something like 'click here to download', then highlight the text and click the link button. This will then let you upload the file you want to 'attach' not sure what you mean by this. all students will be assigned to Moodle courses. the assignments on a course will be available to all students on it. the student then clicks on the assignment and uploads there files as needed. When they click the final submit the teacher is alerted and can go and mark the assignment. There are a ton of options here also for due dates, assignment types, groups with course etc
  21. the default one is perhaps not the most initiative but it is the default. as such you'll find tonnes of you tube videos, websites, forums and other training resources that can teach people how to use it. There is a learning curve but once they are other that it becomes pretty simple to use. Also most of the assignments plugins out there are extensions to the existing moodle assignments system. Not entriley new systems.
  22. not with a vlan it wouldn't. another option would be to put in a 'server' - ie a big powerfull desktop with plenty of ram and install exsi or hyperv onto. Then host the VMS on there. That machine could be given very restricted access to the network. Then the students RDP into their assigned VM and do whatever they need to. At the end of the lesson all the machines are reverted to their golden snapshots.
  23. why XP, it's going to be end of life soon? surely Win 7 would be a better option? Also surely having these in a vm is no different from BYOD? Sure they will be on your network but they won't be able to join the domain as they won't have the password. Also if the machines are running from an ICT lab set of machines you could put then on a vlan and wrap some firewall rules around them.
  24. yeah no probs
  25. give me a shout when you get the install done and i'll help you with the rest
