That helps If it was me I'd have broken down the roles and data differently - a simple split is staff/students, or homes/profiles in terms of servers would have been a starting point for discussion during discovery of the data requirement. I'd ask them why they went for a single big file server, being VMs you can carve up the workload and split out the software fault domains i.e. so a file server holding staff having a problem doesn't hurt students, etc. What did you agree to in the design? They may well have a reason for going about it this way, I'd ask them before you put anything into it though as moving later is harder work.

You can stack Standard licenses up but it all depends on how many cores in your hosts, how many VMs, etc. Datacenter is viable if you have beyond a certain number of VMs on the host at which point stacking standard licenses costs more than datacenter. Lets start again, how many CPU cores in the physical servers, and how many VMs do you want to run? And which hypervisor?

Hi there, I recently put two blocks in on essentials plus licensing that worked fine but on essentials (without the plus) it's more restricted with no HA or vMotion but as long as HA is off on your cluster it shold be OK I'd have thought from that perspective. What happens when you try and put the license in, it should tell you what is annoying it? The vApp is another one though, I've had problems in the past deploying those (such as vRealize Ops Mgr) because it looks for DRS that isn't in place on the cluster but I couldn't find anything to suggest it wouldn't work (or to say it would!) Just had a look on an Enterprise Plus host licensing tab and it doesn't mention anything specific to vApp other than App HA but we're not bothered about that. In short, if you can't get a decent message out of why it won't let you put the license on, make sure HA is off on the cluster and if still no joy take a host out of the cluster (watch out for nutanix shenanigans) and apply it there to see if it is happy and put it back in and try your vApp. Good luck

It shouldn't make any difference on ports in reality, you can tunnel all of it over the gateway anyway so TCP 443 (and UDP 3391 if you want RemoteFX). So full screen desktop or individually published apps - you shouldn't be allowing 3389 at all. It depends how your users want to work, talk to them, POC and ask them what works best for them. Someone on a mac would welcome SIMS in a window, someone on windows may prefer it in a window, or in a full screen with other windows apps they don't have locally.

Looks like it's failing to bind to the port, are you doing this on a domain controller or something that is already listening on LDAP? Do you have the docs for the IP Phones that suggest installing a standalone ldap setup?

Hi James, IANAL but you're right, no need for RDS CALs on Horizon - you'd need them with RDS VDI with Hyper-V though if you went that route. Also no need for VDA if you have SA(Software Assurance) on your endpoints as this includes virtual desktop access rights. If you don't have SA you need to look at the licensing. It is also possible to license SA/VDA on a per user basis as well as device basis depending upon your needs. VDA licensing is an absolute killer and is why a lot of people go with a server based OS like 2012R2/2016 and strip it down to look and feel like the desktop counterpart to do this with RDS licensing instead of VDA. (still giving users a 1:1 relationship with the desktop but the virtual desktop OS isn't a desktop SKU)

Sounds interesting, the removal of the snapshot should be virtually the same on the backup as on the replication - it sounds like for whatever reason there's a difference in what's going on on the ESXi/Storage side when the removal happens and fails causing the consolidation need. For it to then fail with the snapshot hunter to consolidate would reveal some very interesting logs on the ESXi side. I wonder if it's some kind of storage reservation issue perhaps. You say you have multiple hosts, I wonder if its as simple as a lock file issue on the datastore if two hosts simultaneously call for a removal of snapshot and just by luck it's not happened on a backup yet. We could test this theory out quite easily with an orchestrated replication job from a single source datastore. Nonetheless, you should take a vm-support from VMware's side and a log bundle from Veeam and send to both vendors to see whether they can see what's happening. I'd be betting on an ESXi/storage issue myself, the actions being carried out by Veeam are all tasks issued to ESXi/vCenter but if Veeam can reliably cause it in your environment it might help provide insight on what is happening.

What does Veeam say about the VM in question when it happens? I am suspicious of whether this is happening snapshot removal on your local storage through too many things happening at once. (we sometimes see it when a machine drops into wanting consolidation it's because the snapshot removal timed out or such). You could try slowing Veeam down on the number of concurrent tasks, or possibly looking at proxy configuration. Your post says you backup and then replicate, do you know which of the tasks it happens on? (I presume you're backing up and then replicating from the backup, or are you hitting the prod server again?) What is your Veeam configuration in terms of proxies, etc?

Hi there, TCP Port 443 to the gateway will mean mstsc / rdp client will work but not rd web access unless you put web access on the same server as the gateway. Typically people co-host these together for this reason, otherwise it's a second public IP on port 443 pointing to rdweb access box. You probably also want UDP 3391 to the gateway for better performance too.

Are you sure it's only RAID0 and RAID1? How many disks have you got plugged in right now? It might not show you RAID10 until you have 4 plugged in.
