Thats interesting mate, im running it on an old NEC Versa C160 (Athlon XP2200+, 384MB RAM) and it runs reasonably.

ctrl click anyone? I must admit tho it can be a lil irritating and i do find myself using my third finger in an attempt to press the non existent right mouse button sometimes but thats coming from a windows environment every day

Ive got a mac mini and its great, it actually makes me cringe coming back to windows when im at work because of all the litle niggles (and my love for exposé)

True, but for the short amount of time you want to keep the systems up for, it shouldnt be a problem(ie 5-10 mins). Also i wouldnt rely on the UPS to keep the systems up for more than a minimal amount of time, id more look at them for power conditioning (ie brownout and overvolt protection) and to perform graceful shutdowns.

If you are feeling brave, check the power consumption of each unit (in Watts), add them all together. Then compare the result and the maximum running load of the UPS (usually quoted in VA). VA is slightly different from W so a 1500VA UPS and you have to use power factor corrections (which differ from device to device) The industry standard however is around 60% i believe. To safely spec a UPS, i would reccommend using the calculator above but if you must do it the hard way, multiply the wattage by 1.6 to give the size of the UPS required Switches pull 25-50W each, routers and adsl modems (small ones) pull around 20W each, rackmount probably pull some more. From the hardware you mentioned i would put them on a 1000VA unit for decent coverage and some room for expansion.

Just disable drag n drop access to the start menu for the kids and voila, no double clicking EDIT: Forgot to tell you how lol Group policy: User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar -> Remove drag-and-drop context menus on the Start Menu

What level are you patched to (office and XP) and do you have any sort of software to control internet access?

if in doubt, create and ou called "member servers" then block inheritence on the ou (i do this anyway and write a custom gpo for member servers.)

Hater! lol seriously tho, why the bad vibes for macs? i bought one a few months ago and i love it, so does my GF. Back on topic tho, id edit the webby to relative paths otherwise this one will keep coming back ot haunt you on configuration changes, a well thought out and written search and replace would go a long way (after a backup of course ) If you have dreamweaver, i believe it has a "search for broken links" option too so you can automatically check for borked bits.

Did you install Office with the option to use MSI shortcuts? (i think it does this by default) If so i am going to hazard a guess that you havent allowed the location where the shortcuts point to access to run, but hte shortcuts on the desktop will probably be "normal" shortcuts so do not suffer the same problem.

Im looking at the possibility of dual booting my mac between OSX and gentoo, need to do some reasearch into if its possible (im sure Geoff will tell me it is, being the uber gentoo guy here ) but for now, its just OSX Tiger.

FYI the .net installer is available from WSUS too, j2se comes in 2 types, online and offline install, grab the offline install and open the exe with winrar and extract the contents, including the msi. As AJ said take a peek at http://www.appdeploy.com it is an awesome site for creating unattended installs.

I use CD based images at the old place for the exact reasons stated, it worked on all our hardware configurations (using oempreinstall to install extra drivers) installed all the non msi software (such as Macromedia Studio MX 2004 after pulling it to bits and writing unattended install scripts) and performed tweaks such as removing the intel igfxtray icon from workstations and installing the macromedia license. The rest of the software was deployed using GPOs and GPOs locked down the comps. Printers are installed using con2prt (good old NT4 resource kit) via batch scripts assigned to computer rooms.

Well im only 22 so my comp experience is quite limited in comparison, but i have had a ZX Spectrum, and an Amstrad CPC6128 which me and my dad built a voice synthesizer for (was sooo cool lol), then it was onto a SX/33, DX2/66 then the rest is history lol

In theory, yes, but its voluntary and no bugger uses is apart from microsoft and a few other people. The whole windows patching issue can be avoided by adding a rule for the whole windows directory as it should be read only anyway for joe public
