  1. I published a video in a thread very simlar to this one only a few days ago - Using MDT and App-V to deploy Windows 7 and applications - YouTube A mix of MDT (free) and App-V (part of MDOP which is very very cheap) makes it very very easy for us to get Images/Applications to PCs
  2. Seems like we have another case of a non technical issue with people looking for a technical solution (because everyone knows IT guys can do anything ). The issue is students are using their phones - this is a discipline issue and should be treated as such.
  3. Have you tried testing from a full blood Windows PC (rdping into your VM from a full PC) - that would indicate if its an issue with the thin client.
  4. In our LEA we have a LEA provided SMTP email relay - dosnt require auth as it does it via internal IPs. You may find yours has the same set up and you just need to ask them about it.
  5. When you are saying Audio what audio is it that you are playing? RDP can do audio remoting for things like WMA (where the endpoint does all the hard work) but only if the endpoint (your client) supports it. So main question - what are you using for your endpoints?

    Conficker

I thought Microsoft released a patch that prevented Conflicker getting on things? Conficker Worm: Help Protect Windows from Conficker
  7. If you have the cash maybe a enviromental monitor (temp/airflow/humidity).

    i5 versus SSD

    AMD A6 + SSD
  9. Like we'd be so luckey If they could do these at £300 a go I would jump on them right away (after a quick POC) but I couldn't imagine them selling at less than £260 here.
  10. Looks like a great idea Would be nice to see if they include the Flash redirection component of ICA if they are running it on Linux...
  11. Take hardware inventory if you haven’t already (sounds like you might have already with the software). After then maybe time for a complete rebuild of their server and a reimage of machines (with your shiny new licenced software). I will say that in a primary we look after FSU, Year 1 and Year 2 do have generic user accounts (FSU, Year1, Year2) however years 3+ have their own personal accounts (mandated passwords with all of them in a list for teachers to easily get to). I would take a good long look at server and backup setup, maybe time for a new server (should be able to get something very decent for a primary for less than £1000) and a decent disk to disk (if you have multiple sites) or a tape based system.
  12. Would it be of any benefit to anyone if I were to mash together a comparative video (HDD vs SSD) - I know there are plenty out there on YouTube ect already but I'm thinking something more education based/something that you would like to know but that isn't on any other videos.
  13. We just enter the DNS name of our proxy server in any iOS devices - Windows PCs do WPAD perfectly fine but never seems to work just right with iOS (for us at least!).
  14. Oh oh pick me pick me!! Remember when Star Trek was in the Science Museum - was fantastic I seemed to be the only one there who could correctly align the sensors to detect a habitable planet
  15. Hear you loud and clear there - at 1.6ghz dual core my PC should be the slowest one in the school but you know what - the Vertex 3 inside it changes a whole lot of things (8GB of RAM only for running VMs) Problem is the same is happening in the mobile phone market at the moment with people saying look at my shiney quad core android phone it runs as smooth as butter then all the review sites knocking Windows Phone because its only single core (but still runs as smooth as butter)....in that case its the OS fault just as with full PCs its the storage fault for things being slow.
  16. Buy your own SSDs, swap them out and keep a few hard drives lying around if you need to do a warranty replace
  17. We are going solely with SSDs in all new PCs now - staff PCs get 120GB drives and students are getting 60GB. We aren’t going to be doing any HDD - SSD swap outs as most of our kit (that it might be an idea to do it in) is just too old anyway and are moving to more energy efficient CPUs like the AMD E-350s. Servers are getting a SSD boost as well using PCI-E OCZ RevoDrives. The biggest reason for us doing it is making things faster, I'm of an opinion that IT should 'just work' for our users even if it means spending a little extra.
  18. Sysprep is handled by VDI in a Box so not something you have to do yourself
  19. Give the Citrix Support guys a email Most of the time I've seen things like that its a network connection related error though.
  20. Yep we get this now and again - I would imagine its down to whatever polling mechinisim that Windows uses to determine if there is an internet connection. To be honist its not worth burning time on trying to find any kind of a fix.
  21. While not a direct solution to your problem we use a networked scanner from HP here - just uploads the files to a place on our student/staff shared drive and then once a week a script deletes out the contents to keep things clean and tidy. They don't come cheap though!
  22. Not in today however just checked the VPN and we've got 7 (out of about 80) staff connected
  23. Never a problem - @nickbro gets all the real credit though for a fantastic bit of software
  24. My fav quote from YouTube - Wouldn’t be the first time the Argentines have run like hell on the Falklands
