[windows software] Microsoft Lync on EES
jamesfed replied to jamin100's topic in Licensing Questions
When we did it you had to pay for the Server Lic but the cals for users are included -
Sounds like you are getting screen artifacts - had the same with a 9800GT of mine a while back. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=screen+artifacts&hl=en&prmd=imvnsfd&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=HmHtT5nRF4ephAeZrNyVDQ&ved=0CEoQsAQ&biw=1680&bih=954 If you are lucky try a reseat of the card and that will fix it if not you are on the way to a new graphics card.

Replace Cheapo SSL VPN Solution
jamesfed replied to chazzy2501's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We use Forefront TMG 2010 as our SSTP VPN - works with the built in VPN features of Windows 7 so no client to install We run it in a 2008 R2 Virtual Machine and being Microsoft though EES/ect its dirt cheap. -
Working for me

1. Lots of people in both cloud and on prem (we have a on prem backup system) 2. Backup EVERYTHING - that includes user data but also your servers operating systems that way you can restore quickly (and remember the whole idea of backup is to be able to restore) 3. We do full backups of everything over the weekends with daily incremental, user data and the likes gets a incremental 'backup' using volume snap shot every 2 hours during the school day 4. Software sends (over the internet) to your backup provider, bear in mind if you have a large amount of data and a slow internet connection so called 'cloud backup' wouldn't be ideal 5. All data offsite should be encrypted (your provider will usaly do this for you) others will pipe in on here with more details Personally we spent about £340 on a QNAP NAS box (TS-212) to handle the backups for a primary we take care of, it does daily backups of everything (full/incremental) and are quite happy with that. One off cost, I know where the data is kept and have used it in a disaster recovery scenario not so long ago when their server melted. They only lost 2 hours worth of work and the restore took about 3 hours to have everything back to 100% once the new server had arrived.

I will never leave a webpage/close a program if I've still got some text highlighted in it

No problemo maybe lock/delete thread? (not that I want to be a greedy signature monkey)
-
Sorry to be a pain but the bottom link isn't pointing to the right place
-
Hi Ben, Cheers for that - sounds like its quite a little bit of fun but thanks for updating my signature with the links. James

Its a silly thing really but does anyone know how to add a hyperlink into a Edugeek signature? If so could you share this little snippit with me I'm just hoping to have the links to my blog working instead of just plain text

Would I be correct in thinking that Mac Servers can talk to anything that does iSCSI? If so then a basic QNAP iSCSI storage box would fit your needs quite well.

Theres a load of very useful videos here - Download: App-V Video Series - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details I'm accualy working on a blog post at the moment about App-V and its wonders, won't be up for a few more days though.

We have a HP DL165 G7 (little bro of the 385) with a AMD 8 core HE processor here, with a quite a few VMs on it rarely goes above 40% usage - the trick to server virtualisation is always in the storage speed In your case maybe consider a little storage tiering in a HP DL385 G7 - 4x 300GB 10k drives (exchange/ect) and 4x 500GB 7,200 drives (file storage) for example.

+1 for QNAP from me as well, we've got one of the 2 bays at a Primary for their backups and I've got another of the 4 bays at home for iSCSI/few other fun things. Firmware and web GUI are always very good and well worth the money.

Most of the time we will leave the drilling of holes/ect to the site team and do the rest (cable runs/trunking) - you may find that marking out precisely where the holes need to go and asking nicely will work out fine for you as well (but do be precise!).

No boot device - RAID 5 Unconfiguration Bad
jamesfed replied to bondbill2k2's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Sounds to me like the controller is having a little un-fun fun with you. I think it may end up as replacing the controller and a restore from backups. Any power cuts or other abnormal behaviour over the weekend? -
How many disks and at what speed is a thing to think about first.... Otherwise pretty much the same with me as @tmcd0035 - RAID1 for anything that is OS related and then RAID5 for data. If you aren’t using your server to store data (other than your AD) just RAID1 would be fine.

Flash Player Package on CC4

Thats the one I was thinking about! -
Flash Player Package on CC4
jamesfed replied to Serenastra's topic in Network and Classroom Management
If I remember correctly there is a version of Flash you can get off Adobe that comes as a premade MSI (so nothing fancy to do) - have a hunt around and you may find it -
Do you have your XenDesktop setup to pre provision desktops? (ie have them ready and spun up before anyone goes to login) Sounds good otherwise, low/0 noise is a common thing of all thin clients I'm really looking for something in a usage case that makes the M80s special though.

I would be looking at 2 in each as well - that way you can loose one and everything will (largely be ok). We are running 3x DCs at the moment but will be condensing that down into 2 that purely do DC work (right now one of our DCs is a file store, the other also does DHCP + WSUS and one other looks after WDS) over the summer holiday mainly on the grounds of keeping everything simple. I would say if it isn't broken don't fix it but having 1 parent and 2 child domains for a school of your size (pretty much the same as ours) does seem a little excessive....

This doesn’t answer your question but- We use App-V to deliver our applications, works in the same way as most application packagers but you don't need to install the application in the conventional sense on the Machines. Through EES licencing it doesn’t cost much for site wide roll outs, more info is here - App-V Enterprise Management with Microsoft Windows Enterprise
