What constitutes a large number of broadcasts?
jamesfed replied to jamesfed's topic in Network and Classroom Management
All part of the plan Thing is I need to know what 'a large number' means first -
Ooh back up to normal now Time to get back to watching Tublar Bells!

So has anyone seen a sizeable drop in their net speed? Have been uploading a 1min video to Facebook (of a water main leak no less outside my house) and I am being cited 1hr 15mins to upload.... Quick speedtest.net says my connection has gone from a norm of 62ms ping to 995ms with net speeds at 1.67/0.15 against a norm of about 5.5/1.5. Thought hey..whats it like at work? So quick VPN onto a RDS server what is a normal connection speed (dedicated Fibre line) of about 80mb down/70mb up is now 10.75 down and 8.11 up (although ping hasn't suffered).

Weird situation in that case!

Ouch - I wouldn't put a consumer SSD in a proper HP server as the RAID cards don't always like non HP kit. For things of that size I would wait for another guy on here to chirp in or talk to the X-Case guys direct
-
Oooh yes that is me - the SSD is so that the OS dosn't get taken down while the HDDs look after the backup data.
-
If that was for the VDI then yes
-
Fine and dandy then

Would you be keeping all your live data/backups in the same physical location in that case? I know some are of the mind that backup data should be as far away from live as possible but we take the stance that our backup server is a separate block and the likelihood of both burning down is low.

Home setup recommendations for a VDI noob - Hyper-V and VM Sphere
jamesfed replied to bondbill2k2's topic in Hardware
For just home setup/mucking around I would look at just getting some desktop parts and mashing them together, if you are looking at VDI a SSD is a near must I did a post on my blog a while back that had a PC made out of normal desktop parts for £265 that would run VDI stuff with no issues, link is - What does it take to run a Citrix VDI-in-a-Box Proof of Concept? | my world of IT -
Using TMG 2010 for Firewall / VPN / Web Filtering
jamesfed replied to waya01's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yep SQL Reporting Services so if you are a dab hand at it you could make your own reports We are running it as a Hyper-V virtual machine, 4vProcs assigned and RAM ballons up to about 6GB on a busy day. At any given time there are about 250 users on the network using the internet/ect. Most VPN connections I have seen was 15 (during a teachers strike day of all days!) and it worked perfectly We have a UAG server as well but use it as our students portal. Have a look at the Direct Access features in Server 2012 - all without IPv6 requirements! Plan on looking deeper at this the moment it goes RTM. -
and just to be a pain........ Time for a new backup server | my world of IT homebrew FTW!

How about a DL165 G7 with a MSA attached? You would have a external SAS card that would go into the back of the MSA and give you the extra hard drive bays.

Making a new machine! I have £210 (£240 stressed) budget! Help please
jamesfed replied to MelodicBrush's topic in Windows
Novatech do bundles as well and even have pre built cased systems as well - Barebone Systems : Computer Supplies and PC Components from Novatech £199.99 will buy you a quad core AMD PC with mobo and RAM, another few £s will buy you a low cost hard drive (unless you have one spare). -
Using TMG 2010 for Firewall / VPN / Web Filtering
jamesfed replied to waya01's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We use TMG for Firewall, Webfiltering and VPN and find it great. Are moving into logging/reporting over this summer holiday and in testing it is ok although maybe lacking in detailed reports that many other filtering solutions provide. Either way we saw it probably just as you are - a very VERY low cost solution to schools that ticks all the boxes, our staff are finding the VPN very stable and having the connection client built right into windows is a big help (no silly Java things to install or a website to visit). If you have any specific questions just post here or PM me -
It doesn’t answer your question but what edition of Windows Server are you running? If its Enterprise or higher you could do the same using DFS-R (Replication) and get it to do the migration, just setup a namespace add the two servers let it replicate over and then take out one of the servers.

Setup your server as a virtual host now and setup your DC ect on it as a VM - that way you can save the issues of P2V migrations (and associated downtime) later along the line. As far as backup goes Server 2008 R1/R2 includes a backup system out of the box (free) just enable it as a feature if you are looking to backup a large number of servers you will want to use DPM although it doesn’t require SCCM to work. If you have a decent VPN link to this server (if you have a main site ect) then you could do an initial sync of the server with it hosted at your main site and then do incremental from there on in over the VPN (overnight).

Had confirmation our new PCs were on the way on Friday (should be with us in a week once they are built) - AMD E-350 CPU, OCZ Agility 3 SSD, 4GB DDR3 and SATA3 Tiny little machines as well about the size of 2 DVD cases stuck together! Have some extra money after the summer to spend as well - thought so far is thin clients for what will soon be our RemoteFX setup (SSD in both the host servers and the clients).
