Hyper + V and dynamic memory on failover cluster
jamesfed replied to Rozzer's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Phew well u've got me there then! Never seen anything like that -
It is possible to use Virtual Box in direct Hard Drive access mode - Chapter*9.*Advanced topics That way you wouldn't need to do a P2V. All the same....this is something where you need to give a solid no, 95 is just too old to be used anymore just as XP will be soon enough (and I'm sorry to our Schools Science Department but on the last day of XP support your acient PCs are going to be pulled off the desk and put into the mincer).

Hyper + V and dynamic memory on failover cluster
jamesfed replied to Rozzer's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Is there a differance in RAM between the two servers at all? Also this is where you should look to check the resurve settings - would be surprised if it is set at anything else. -
Does anyone have any rack rails that would work with a HP DL385 G1 (old school!!) that I could have? Would be happy to pay a reasonable price for them via PayPal. Cheers! James

You will want to go to the hosts tab then select the host you are having problems with - just click into its properties and see what its all set to as reserves. -

Are you running SCVMM with any host resurves set on the 2nd server? -

Dynamic Memory is relating to RAM usage - when your VMs are being hosted on the 2nd server does it run low on RAM? -
Citrix VDI in a box demo day
jamesfed replied to jamesfed's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Little bit of a bump - I am hoping to go ahead with this on Wednesday 6th June 2012 starting around 10. Have confirmed that I can get someone from both Citrix and 10zig on site. Also for anyone that is intrested do have a look at this RAID Cache and VDI | my world of IT -
Would be a bit of a dramatic change but have you looked at using Thin Clients with VDI/RDS - the thin clients can take more of a beating that any PC out there as all the expensive bits sit safely in your server room

PRTG appears to be a lot cheaper for simlar/same features Mobile website works great on my Windows Phone 7 as well

XenApp, XenDesktop, VDI-in-a-Box
jamesfed replied to Byford-Rew's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
In our next deployment we are going to be increasing our VDI in a box estate from 20 to 50 and moving to Windows 7 at the same time. As far as the base OS goes all it will be is Windows 7 with Adobe Flash/Reader/Silverlight/Java/Shockwave - all the applications will then be mashed out using App-V with Office 2007 already in the local cache of the machines. That way it closely mirrors what will soon become our normal desktop deployment strategy leaving you very little to worry about (especially considering App-V works on almost anything and creates start menus based upon the users permissions for applications and not what is locally installed). Using App-V with both VDI and fat clients also means you don’t need to replicate application installations in two places (one for App-V on the fat clients and then again for the VDIs). If you are interested in VDI in a box do let me know as I hope to hold a mini conference around it soon.- 3 replies

How much data is being backed up? - also when the backups are running are there any resource conentions? Most likely in your network connection to the iSCSI box.

[mdt] Installation Media for non-PXE Workstations
jamesfed replied to deano's topic in O/S Deployment
I would want to look into the reason why this isn't working on some of your PCs - are they all of a simlar design? Do you have others of the same design that work fine? What is the networking like going to them - any breaks in the cables ect? Just bypassing around an issue might result in you finding other issues later on. -
Looking for a 10" Tablet - Any suggestions?
jamesfed replied to flyinghaggis's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
That is what Windows on Arm is all about - uses the same kinds of low power long battery life processors as you might find in your Android tablet. Although no word on pricing yet I would imagine them to come in at more expensive than most Androids but on par with the iPad. -

Windows 8 is on the way -
If Hyper-V in Server 8 is as good as promised we will be going onto it ASAP With the new world of public Beta and RC testing I think the days of shoddy first releases (expecily now that service packs are mere roll ups of previous updates and hotfixes) are starting to fade away.

Thanks for posting - good to hear others are getting theirs working.

+1 for backups as above - this doesn’t sound like the time to watch things falling apart. It does sound like you should consider a ground up build - what you have there sounds like something more complex than even most medium sized businesses and is not suitable for a school. Spend plenty of time planning your new network – you might even want to take Windows Server 8 in mind as it should be with us before the end of the year. Other than that you should to look at mixing in a few value added features like a VPN for staff or virtual desktops for the students (just so it doesn’t look like you have made massive changes spent loads of money but not actually brought anything worth while to the table).

If possible I would usaly go with a dedicated switch for iSCSI - that way the traffic dosn't touch your 'core' network.

Good to hear guys - any views of term time/non term time? -
Are we talking Single Instance Sign On where you login to the PC once and thats the last time you touch a username/password box forever or Single Sign On where you have a single username/password for all your services but are prompted to login to each one?

Put it in the AUP that using tethering to bypass internet filtering is not allowed and then pick him up on it - to be honest I can't see a technical solution to this but then again it shouldn't be a technical issue in the first place - its a disip/user issue.
