I'm looking to extend coverage our existing Unifi Wifi (NanoHD APs) due to the fact I now have 3 laptop trollies around site. Originally, when I put the NanoHDs in, we didnt have any laptop trollies and the coverages was for BYOD (Phones, and the odd tablet/laptop) Fastforward a bit and last year we introduced our first laptop trolley (32 x Dell 3190) due to staff not being able to book IT rooms when they needed and it went down a storm and staff were happy with performance/logon times etc Fastfowrd another 6 months and we have a 2nd trolley (32 x Dynabook) - again these have gone down well. Starting to notice a couple of issue with Wifi coverage, as APs are mainly in corridors (approx 1 AP per 4 classrooms) I am gettings reports that sometimes, so students are taking approx a good 10-25 mins to logon and get to a desktop - when I've brought them in for testing or I have tested them in place, they appear to work fine. The two laptop trollies are never in the same vacinity so I dont have 64 laptops trying to overload the APs in that area. So... now about to introduce a 3rd (15 x HP) trolley, so I think I need to look at adding some additional APs. I'm a little torn between keeping with the NanoHD, as they offer great realibity vs cost, or do I go U6-Pro for the additional APs, Laptops wont take advantage of Wifi 6 but will add they little bit of future proofing for next few years. There is approx £20-30 difference between the Nano and U6-Pro but when multiplied by X number of APs, then that could potentially be abother couple of Nano APs....... Laptops will be around for approx 3 years, by which time, the Wifi will be due for renewal (will have been in 7-8 years by that point), so the existing NanoHD will be replaced and/or Wifi 6 as well if I get them - as when the Wifi is upgraded/changes it could change to a different vendor. What would you opt for? NanoHD, as laptops dont support Wifi 6 and the current bulk of BYOD are not Wifi 6 as yet or Get Wifi 6 for potentiel BYOD devices connecting which may support Wifi 6 which will hopefully help when Laptops connect to those APs. Cheers

Teams Sites or Just SharePoint for Staff Departmentals areas

This may sound like a stupid question - but what naming convention do people use for their sites? -
Teams Sites or Just SharePoint for Staff Departmentals areas
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
This is the way I just insisted we go after a meeting I;ve just been to and was the way I was planning to move towards, but after some staff offered suggestions, I thought it only fair to hear them out and look at their suggestions. -
Teams Sites or Just SharePoint for Staff Departmentals areas
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
Will I had made my mind up to use a Team per Dept but then I realised on SharePoint, you can have Different Document Libraries - and with permissions set, anyone selected AD/Azure Group cannot see them. So now thing, so I keep the Single Staff SharePoint, and have different Document Libraries for each Department with AD/Azure Group Permissions set on each Library...... I set out emails to staff asking which they would prefer, and responses were somewhat lacking and even then, they haven't a clue! What are peoples thoughts about document libraries? Cheers -
Smoothwall - Renew or replace?
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I was digging though the last renewal quote and realised that we got 6 months extra when we renewed last time, so it means I have a bit more time to look at this in the new year as renewal now due in June. -
Smoothwall - Renew or replace?

Not keen on Meraki due to their high licensing costs at renewal times. What model of Fortinet or Lightspeed have they gone for? Does Fortinet comply with Dfe requirements for web filtering? -
Yep, pretty much in the same boat with looking for Unifi kit - couple of suppliers I've contacted have just said Ubiquiti haven't and cannot give them any dates for deliveries. I'm after G3 Dome Cameras and the 48 port EdgeMax Lite Switches - POE versions.

Smoothwall - Renew or replace?
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
No complaints about smoothwall (other than reporting can be a pain at times) - been using smoothwall for the past 10 years (8 years of which have been here) Just a bad year for renewals as I have lots of things coming up for renewal this year, so making sure I do the due dilligance etc - and to keep the auditors and finance people happy -
[21h2] Sound automatically muting and not working
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Windows 10
Turned out to be an Impero issue (Version 8.6.11) Just updated to 8.6.12 - so need a change to test on the affected computers when the rooms isnt being used. -
Our Smoothwall is up for renewal in January and I'm torn between sticking with the devil I know - with a new S9 box or opting for a different vendor altogether and the learning curve and network reconfigurations associated with a new vendor etc. So... for people who have recent moved away from Smoothwall (Firewall/Filtering/BYOD) what did you opt for and are you happy with the choice how big a nightmare was it moving over? Knowing what you know now, would you have stayed with Smoothwall or you glad you switched? Cheers

[21h2] Sound automatically muting and not working
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Windows 10
Nope, just a basic no thrills keyboard. Works while an admin is logged on when the drivers have been removed and reinstalled - but soon as admin logs off or switch user, it goes back to muting again. -
Have a weird one.... drivers installed and work fine (according to device manager) Speaker icon show as muted, soon as I adjust the volume, it make the usual sound as you increase the volume, but then it instantly mutes again. I've remove the drivers and updating them - this work fine whilst I am logged on, but soon I log off and log on again, the same thing happens again. Anyone come across this before and have a solution? Cheers

Removing and Reinstalling AD Cert Services
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Enterprise Software
Also....looking at event viewer on the server, it is telling me there are some Certs missing or the directory replication may not be complete. As it is a single CA server I dont think replication is the issue - which now leaves me scratching my head as to why it is telling me some Certs are missing -
I have a bit of a strange issue where I have been going through PingCastle and I'm trying to sort Certificate enrollment so it is HTTPS. Going through and trying to swap over the bindings to https and I'm getting an error about process already in use. Also, when I look at the Certificate enrollments, PC enrollments havent taken place for the last year :consfused: as the expiry dates are 2021 - which is about the time I didnt an inplace updrade from 2012r2 to 2016. Since I cant get iis to switch to https and enrollments are not taking place (even though GPOs are set - but works for VPN users ) Is it a massive No No to remove and reinstall ADCS? I would have to re-issue certs for VPN and Radius BYOD clients but that isnt the end of the world (or is it??)

I have been asked if it is possible to come up with a voting form where outside people can complete but ensuring they can only complete the form once. Can Power Automate check completed forms for a certain field (such as email address) and if already found on a previously completed form then not allow the form to be submitted? Cheers

I currently have student resources on SharePoint and all home drives and staff resources on premise. Only staff can use RDS (html5 interface) with MFA enabled to access home drives and staff resources. Plans are to move staff resources to Teams/SharePoint and then user areas to One Drive.

Ended up changing to split tunnel and then adding the subnet again but with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 So all working now...... 2-3 days on something that will be used for 1 user!
-
Yep, subnet is on smoothwall. I'm wondering if it down to how the IP address is assigned as I have just looked at the DHCP lease is down as the VPN server and an unique ID as RAS. May need to do some more reading I think.
-
Morning all Just configured Always on VPN and have it working with a device tunnel and for the most part works well, can access all internal network resouces, but when it comes to web browsing, I am hitting a bit on an issue. Internal website are fine and any website exceptions on smoothwall are accessible, such as Office 365. Anthing else I am getting "Access denied: authentication configuration missing" Looked on smoothwall and no user details are being passed on to smoothwall. I have IDex and Active Directory are configured for Smoothwal Authentication, so not sure why user details are not being passed over. Anyone else who uses VPN and Smoothwall able to help - before I go down the rabbit hole and contact Smoothwall Support. Thanks Mark
