Hello. Got a odd one here. Some laptops have got a issue with Edge/Chrome and outputting sound. I have tested the speakers on the laptop, and they work but no sound though Edge and Chrome (Might be more programs but only tested these 2) I can see the volume mixer for it moving in the taskbar for the browser but not the speakers one. Has anyone seen this before? I've reinstalled sound drives, BIOS update, Reinstalled Edge but still nothing.

I have 2 machines that are experiencing this issue, one is an official windows 11 machines, the other has had it shoe-horned onto it. These machines live in a training room, and due to the drive to save money they were turned off between the start of the Easter holidays and sometime in August. They successfully installed the 2022-04 CU update, missed 05, 06, and 07 updates, and then failed to update to the 2022-08 onwards CU updates with error 0x800f0988. I'm pretty sure it's because they have missed out on a servicing stack update as part of the CU, or the 2022-04 update did not install a SSU component correctly. I've tried to do all the usual resets of update components to no avail, the troubleshooter does not detect a problem. SSU are not available separately. I've only avoided nuking these from orbit because they have a load of training software on them that is... Difficult... to reload for a variety of reasons. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm currently working on a script to map network drives on local laptop accounts, where it prompts the user for their credentials and maps the drive using them. I have it working, where it maps the drive and it is browsable...but it stops working if I log off and back on again. The mapped drive actually stays, but it has a red X and states the username or password is incorrect and prompts for a password (with the username pre-filled). I am using the NET USE command with the /persistent:yes switch, but it's not working as expected. Update: It's actually happening when I use NET USE in the traditional way, without any extra weirdness. It seems to be related to the fact that I'm using credentials that do not match the user I'm logged on with. $Credentials = Get-Credential -Message "Please enter your computer credentials" #Get user's AD credentials $Username = "DomainName\" + $Credentials.Username #Get the username from specified credentials and append the domain name at the start $SecurePassword = New-Object System.Management.Automation.PSCredential ($Username, $Credentials.Password) #Get password from saved credentials in a secure string $UnsecurePassword = $SecurePassword.GetNetworkCredential().Password #Convert password to plain text $HomeFolder = "\\domain.fqdn\staffhome$\" + $Credentials.Username + "\Documents" #Specify the path for the home folder, using the username from the AD credentials entered $StaffShare = "\\domain.fqdn\staffshare$" #Specify the path for the staff shared area If (!(Test-Path "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Connect\GUI\scgui.exe")) { Write-Output "Sophos Connect is not installed. Please install the software and try again."} Else { Write-Output "Copying Sophos configuration file..." xcopy "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Connect\VPN.scx" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Connect\Import\" /Y #Copy Sophos Connect configuration file to the Import folder in Program Files Write-Output "Mapping H: drive..." Write-Output $HomeFolder Net Use H: $HomeFolder /user:$Username $UnsecurePassword /persistent:yes #Map H: drive Documents folder using the user's credentials to authenticate Write-Output "Mapping J: drive..." Write-Output $StaffShare Net Use J: $StaffShare /user:$Username $UnsecurePassword /persistent:yes} #Map J: drive Staff Share folder using the user's credentials to authenticate The reason I'm not using New-PSDrive is because the -persist flag doesn't save the mapped drive and it disappears after log off, even with the -Scope Global flag. It seems this is a quirk of mapping drives with a different user's credentials than the one who is logged on. Also, the reason for the weird credentials bit is because I want the user to be prompted to enter it...but it saves it as a secure string and NET USE fails to map it, so I need to convert it to plain text.

Strange one this, teachers laptop cameras and also usb cameras have stopped working. By that I mean either the camera won't open or it opens and freezes every few seconds. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the camera driver with no luck We have this on 2 different laptops models, but they were installed from the same image. Have tried most general idea's surfing around the net We did do an in-place upgrade to 21H2 over the summer and my best guess is something happened at this point. I can try some other things but slightly panicking at the moment as we have some 140+ laptops and the teachers will soon by doing a remote parents evening. I'm hoping someone can provide some clues or experiences Thanks in advance

Hi,I want to install the CyberStart VM into one of our ICT suites but have ran into an issue. Our proxy is client based and so when the VM is booted into the preloaded Linux OS users are able to browse the web unfiltered becuase the VM does not have the proxy client.Does anyone have any ideas about how I go about making sure the VM is filtered. Its VMWare workstation player that is being used to load the VM.Thanks

Morning, We have a Wi-Fi network with a hidden SSID. I added it to our five tills and they're all happy, apart from one where I inadvertently mis-typed the password. It has now remembered that and I cannot for the life of me find where to remove it again. I added another connection to the hidden SSID with the correct password, but it refuses to connect. I'm assuming it is continuing to try to connect with the wrong password so I'd like to remove it from it's memory! Stuart

Hi folks, I'm looking at Win 10 feature updates for the Summer and just wanted to check my understanding. Normally we always rebuild classroom PCs in the Summer with the latest version of Win 10, but this Summer I am looking at going away for 4 weeks and won't have time to rebuild them, if I go away. We currently have 21H2 education on our classroom PCs, and that has an end of support life of 22/6/24. Therefore it leaves a gap of 3 or so weeks before the 2024 Summer hols start. I am trying to gauge how much that exposes us from a security point-of-view. Is it absolutely the case that security updates stop at the end of the support life, or do critical updates, or some other class of updates, still get produced for the build? Thanks

Hi Everyone, I have setup a WDS Server to deploy out windows to new and existing pcs but running into a problem with joining to the domain. So the first thing I do is create the unattended file and then add to the image in wds and the. Pre-stage the client in ad with the gui But the problem I’m facing is that the unattended file isn’t working as it should, can’t join domain basically. Please could someone provide some help on this? Thanks

I'm tearing my hair out over this one as it used to work reliably and now doesn't, I've tried 4 different methods of scripting network printer connections but none of them seem to work 100%. I can't use PaperCut Print Deploy because it doesn't support deploying printers based on Active Directory properties of the computer. Same for Group Policy Preferences. I have tried: objNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection \\PRINTSERVERNAME\PRINTQUEUE cscript.exe %windir%\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\prnmngr.vbs -ac -p \\PRINTSERVERNAME\PRINTQUEUE rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /in /q /n \\PRINTSERVERNAME\PRINTQUEUE objShell.Run "%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe \\PRINTSERVERNAME\PRINTQUEUE", 0, True Can anyone suggest any other more reliable ways to deploy printers? It's not the PrintNightmare stuff as that would mean it wouldn't work at all, what is happening is it is randomly deploying some of the printers and not others.

I have a couple of test rooms set up for WUFB with a view to killing WSUS in september. WUFB is working fine insofar as the updating side goes, the machines are updating nicely. Even a test non 21H2 upgraded to 21H2 without being prompted. What I am having issues with is the log analytics for about three quarters of the systems. These will not appear in log analytics at all. All the machines are hybrid joined, I used the MS script to get the ball rolling for WUFB. This is the log portion with the error: 2022-08-04T10:17:02 : Info : Start: RunCensus 2022-08-04T10:17:02 : Info : Setting property: FullSync to value 1 at registry key path HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Census to turn on Census FullSync mode 2022-08-04T10:17:02 : Info : Running C:\WINDOWS\system32\devicecensus.exe 2022-08-04T10:17:02 : Error : ErrorCode 51 : RunCensus failed with unexpected exception HResult: -2146233087 ExceptionMessage: Cannot bind parameter 'Date' to the target. Exception setting "Date": "Cannot convert null to type "System.DateTime"." any ideas? My googlefu has failed on this one.

I don't think this issue is specifically related to our VPN itself, hence why I've started the thread here than in another section. We use Sophos IPsec VPN for external access, however we are finding that an increasing number of users are reporting that their mapped drives aren't working. This mainly occurs when they are connected to the VPN, however I have also seen it when they're connected to the internal network, not via Sophos. I am struggling to replicate the issue when connecting the device via my phone's hotspot. I can see in the event logs that the folder redirection was sucessfully applied The mapped drives end up having red x through them and when you try to access them, it says something along the drives of "Could not reconnect the drive. The network name is already in use". The Documents folder also won't work, because Documents redirects into their networked home folder. Although I can see in the event logs that folder redirection applied correctly.

Hi All, Had a few reports of delays opening files from a network share, when I watched the issue in action I saw that the files were opening a dialogue box where the file was downloading before opening and then opening afterwards but for some reason this "new download" was taking a few minutes to download and open (downloading and then opening instead of opening straight from the share) Anyone seen this before? Server 2019 Share, Win 10\11 devices, Office 2019\365, observed issue with recently .pptx files (using Sophos AV) Cheers!

Hi all, We currently use Mandatory Profiles and redirected AppData and I am looking to see if there is a better way so I was wondering how other have set their profiles, what is the most efficient way? UPDATE: We are a secondary school.

Have a weird one.... drivers installed and work fine (according to device manager) Speaker icon show as muted, soon as I adjust the volume, it make the usual sound as you increase the volume, but then it instantly mutes again. I've remove the drivers and updating them - this work fine whilst I am logged on, but soon I log off and log on again, the same thing happens again. Anyone come across this before and have a solution? Cheers

Hi all, Upgraded the machines during the summer to 21H2 from 1908 and weirdly a number of staff don't get the printers assigned to them from Group Policy. Print Server is on 2012 R2. Other users in the same OU get the GP deployed printers. Deleted appdata, profiles, settings packages and still nothing. Really stumping me this one.
