I’m aiming to keep the break glass - it jump a case of swapping the push button with a reader. Overall aim is to stop sixth form students sneaking off site.
-
We have Paxton in place and Mag locks with readers on the outside and push to exit buttons and a break glass option on the inside. We also have some external gate with readers on one side and push button on the other. Do we need the push the exit buttons? Can we replace the push to exit with readers (keeping the break glass option on external doors) Mag locks release on fire alarm plus we schedule door release at start and end of school. The aim is to try and funnel sixth students through the main entrance when leaving site during the day as presently they can leave via any door and we would potentially not know they have left if we have a fire alarm. Cannot seem to find any info if the push to exit buttons is a legal requirement. Cheers

Testing alternative Firewall/Filtering products
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
I do have a switch between smoothwall and router as the switch also connects the failover connection. I did consider that, but then would have to create a new vlan with different gateway routing addresses - as all but BYOD vlans use core switch as gateway before going to smoothwall. Plus, I would have to set and external IPs on the test VMs - as they would then be exposed directly to to the internet. Unless I am overthinking things...... -

I'm currently looking at alternative Firewall/Filtering products and some have VM versions available, so I can download and try. My question is, how would you go about testing with another product in place? In my office I have an edge switch, I am thinking of using a spare switch and server in the attach image config. Then on smoothwall, set the IP address of the VMs user a transparent proxy and filtering exceptions - so Test VMs are then basically doing the filtering etc...... Does that make sense and should that work? Cheers

Turns out the first I tried could be faulty! Setup a 2nd one just before I left and that appears to be working fine. Will be picking up the support call on Monday.

Just taken delivery of 6 x SV23 sensors and I am struggling in getting them working. Currently on with Verkada support and drawing a blank. Anyone use these with Smoothwall? Did you change any settings on Smoothwall to get them workings? Cheers

We're on a blacklist and can't get off!

Have a look at MXToolbox - https://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx May give you some further insights -
Hi All I seem to be posting a lot regarding ISP/Firewall/Filtering etc at the moment...... so please forgive yet another one Does anyone use Schools Broadband just for their connection (no filtering etc) I've seen past posts about their service which seems to include the filtering side of things and I don't want those posts about filtering side of things to muddy the waters in my decision making. So, how you found the connection on its own? Cheers

Anyone head of this ISP supplier

Got 4 quotes and I am currently waiting on a 5th quote due to the large variation in costs. The quote definitely mentions managed leased line - 1gb on 10gb bearer and was mentioned during our conversations. I've asked for clarification and to double check the quote - along with copies of SLA/T&Cs plus any testimonials. -
Has anyone heard of or used a company called Communication Plus based in Rainford, Merseyside? I have a quote for a leased line - 1gb connection on a 10Gb bearer which is ridiculously cheap when compared to others. I'm trying to workout if it one of those "too good to be true" situations or if it is a genuine really good deal. Cheers

I've been doing the same

I deploy Office 365 out via SCCM and installs correctly with all items. Shortly after installation (I would say a couple of hours to a day later) MS Access disappears -as in it is removed! No other office installation of office versions exist on SCCM which rules out another version of Office being deployed out. Event Viewer shows nothing (or that I can find) Anyone come across this before? Cheers

I'm having a look at different ecosystems and my brain hurts from looking at the different offerings, especially as just discovered Sophos do APs and Switches! We currently use Unifi Nano HD APs and EdgeMax Lite switches for edge cabs, with a few FS switches - and 2 D-Link DXS-3600 Core switches. Ideally I am looking to try and bring as much as possible under one management interface, such as - Firewall. Filtering, APs, Switching I think ultimately I am going to have to be realistic in terms what we could realisically afford with budgets against what I would like. So, Ive started to look at the following (I know some don't Firewall/Filtering offerings): Fortinet - looked great at Bett Sophos - only thought about AV and FIrewall/Filtering and now just discovered they did other things - so need to look at this more. Zyxel - only seen a brief demo at Bett and the discussions on here. Unifi - currently use but, use EdgeMax Lite Switches and Nano HD APs and the switches and APs use different management interfaces served from a linux VM running the controllers. Ignoring Firewall/Filterings for the moment......... If I stayed with Unifi and updated the APs to Wifi 6 and Switches to the Cloud version, so they are on the same management interface, this would be a start but then....... would you then use a Dream Machine (or VM), a couple of Hi-Capacity Aggregation Switches and a EnterpriseXG 24 to bring everything together before going to the Firewall/Filtering box? I know support is a big area for some people, but apart from warranty, I use Edugeek, Google and other Forums for help. From a cost point of view, I would imagine Unifi would win but they are quick to discontinue kit and support is mainly forum based. So, looking at all options - I think a phased change over would be the only option due to cost. unless I managed to persuade SLT for a leased option...... Ideally looking for a ecosystem which does not involve any major subscription fees. I've just started reaching out to some companies for demos and for budgetary pricing, but would love to hear other peoples thoughts. Cheers

Our current Leased line is due for renewal towards the end of Jan 2024, so I am starting to look at alternatives now, so I can get things sorted before the 90 day notice period! Currently using M247 and apart from a sligh blip now and then, they have provided a rock solid service. So, apart from Cost.... I'm looking for the following. 1gb connection with redundacy QoS enabled for our on Prem 3CX system. Free Fortigate device with decent reporting ( I can live in hope ) Some form of DDOS protection - which doesnt cost and arm and a leg! Can my fellow edugekers, please let me know who they use, along with their experiences please. Cheers

Fortinet echo system - your opinions

Does Fortinet support off site filtering? -
Student Appdata folder - redirect or not?
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
Do you have teams installed on these devices? Found it created user folders under C:\ProgramData that do not get cleared on a profile clean. I ended up removing Teams and left them to use the web version. -
Would you mind share your settings?

Morning all Currently using Smoothwall for filtering - Have no issues with Smoothwall - but licence up for renewal in June, so looking at alternatices. We used Unifi for Access Points and a mixture of 95% Unifi EdgeMax switches and about 5% FS Switches. Looking to try and being eveything under one umberella for ease of managment in terms of one interface, one system So with this in mind, I was thinking Fortinet - does all this and (as far as I know is KCSIE, Dfe, etc compliant) So, before I go down this rabit hole and spend time looking into this....... Anyone else use Fortinet for Firewall/Filters, AccessPoints and Switches? Should I look to keep things seperate? Welcome all thoughts and opinions on this. Cheers

XML has no mention of access. Manage to sort it now - used SCCM to redo the deployment package - Its Tuesday and its already being a bad week

Smoothwall - Renew or replace?
mdrabble replied to mdrabble's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I renewed for an additional 12 months to give me more time to evaluate other products especially with the new KCSIE updates. -
Ok, so been deploying out Office 365 for 3 years - and yesterday I got a message that MS Access was needed for a lesson today. Checked and yep, MS Access not included with Office 365 we deploy out - but is included with the version they can download and install themselves. To save me trawling through loads of web pages, rabbit holes etc.... anyone know of a quick way and I install it? Cheers
