This is a great topic and full of good advice and tips. Wish I'd have found it a few weeks ago when I was doing our initial O365 configuration. Like someone near the beginning said a lot of people seem to be recreating the wheel when it comes to things like this since PS came out. And while there are a lot of good scripts already on-line I always find myself having more trouble trying to work out what they do and making sure they are safe and not going to screw anything up (call me paranoid) that sometimes I can see the benefit in creating them yourself as at least you are learning how it all works at the same time!

Just a few queries on what you said... 2) Is there a list of all the ISO's to download? 3) Once I've got it installed do I need to copy over existing documents? And what is the "DSM Server Option" I need to configure? Something within SIMS? Or a separate service?

Afternoon All, Got a quote from Capita but they came in at ~900 quid so looking to do it myself this summer. Our current set up is 2 servers. One with the DB on and one with the S:\ on. We'd be looking to consolidate the two existing servers into one on a new 2012 server. Not done this before and have a few queries so bare with me. 1) In terms of the DB... Is it just a case of backing up the database and copying it to a new instance of SQL Server 2012? Or is there more to it than that? I remember hearing something about needing to use a SIMS Tool to do this in order to preserve user passwords etc. Also will a bog standard install of SQL 2012 work or does it need to be configured in weird and wonderful ways? 2) In terms of the S:\ and various other bits and bobs can I just move this manually or do I need to "install" it again from some sort of media? 3) Someone mentioned something about a document server. I've not come across this before in my use of SIMS. Is this just a shared folder which needs copying and SIMS configured to point at it? 4) In terms of SOLUS 2 \ SOLUS 3 how do I go about setting this up and migrating or installing? Any help on the questions above would be awesome. Any guides on this would be welcome as well. Thanks in advance,

How did you redirect the libraries?

It was more to do with the fact if for some reason your SAN \ VM Cluster should fall over or you need to take them down for maintenance you still have a physical DC available. I was thinking more from a disaster recovery point of view rather than a day to day usage. Also to add to things not to virtualize one thing I've always been taught is to not use a VM as a NTP server as the drift on the VM clock is a lot worse than that on a physical server.

One server per role and some back up built in so couple of DCs etc. Like mentions above with a datacentre license world is your oyster. Keep one DC physical though for obvious reasons.

Yeah I've did about a dozen back in 2012 but it's been a while. I always fancied doing the MK one as the route looked a lot nicer. Should probably get back into it again as running by myself is nice but it's slightly more competitive with the Park Run. Not the worst exam software I've ever had to use. That award goes to Promissor. But it's not the easiest either. My main issues have come from trying to explain to the Exams Officer how it works regarding the rooms \ invigilators etc.

If you are concerned about SCCM it's worth bearing in mind you can still do LTI with SCCM. It's what we use at work. Totally get why you wouldn't want to do ZTI though. Horror stories like this are why I refuse to implement it.

Morning All, We have Office 365 set up with Dir Sync. In Office 365 we have 1600+ users. Most students, some teachers. I'm just about to license them via powershell but will need different licenses applied to each group. What is going to be the easiest way of doing this? Is it possible to create groups in Office 365 and assign student licenses to one group and assign staff licenses to the other? Or am I going to have to filter the students \ staff when I'm running set-msoluserlicense cmdlet?

Thought I'd give it a bash and no issues until it came to finish off creating the Password Object. I'm getting an error something along the lines of: Operation failed. error code: 0x20e7 The modification was not permitted for security reasons. 000020E7Tongue TiedvcErr: DSID-03050681,problem 5003 (WILL_NOT_PERFORM),data 0 I've tried the usual of looking through MS and Google but can't find an easy fix. Has anyone who has used Fine Grained Password has this error before at all?

Looking to change our password policy to force students and staff alike to have 8 characters in their username. Thought I'd test it out on a test OU but creating a GPO and assigning it to the test OU doesn't seem to enforce it. I can set other settings and they apply but not the password policy. Are there special considerations when using GPO to set password complexity on OUs? Also I see that it's a computer policy... if I say wanted to force students to have one set of rules and staff another then I assume that I would need to enable loop back processing and assign it to a USER OU? Generally happens when the machine hasn't been shut down properly. Any ideas? HDD light goes crazy, almost as if it's running a chkdisk when logging in for the first time after not shutting down properly.

C++ runtimes is a good shout. Didn't include this in our original build last year but definitely will be this year.
