LMAO! Now that makes me feel f***ing old! I just mean through installing Windows and the apps by hand and syspreping it and capturing it. Would be useful for a lot of those annoying little older apps that are a pain to package up.

So these days there's no way to create your own image from scratch manually and capture it? It has to be through a TS?

We're replacing a load of our old ones. I'll see what I can find on Tuesday for you.

How does MDT help with capturing? I have to admit since moving to SCCM I've always imaged with the standard install.wim from the Windows 7 DVD. Did try and make a master image once but it kept on causing issues with the Config Manager client when I tried pushing it out and never figured it out so kept with the default image instead due to time constraints at the time.

I've moved from WDS to using SCCM for our OS deployment and completely skipped MDT. I've heard that MDT offers a lot of decent features and functionality that SCCM OSD is lacking and it's possible to integrate MDT into SCCM. Would anyone be kind enough to let me know what the benefits of doing so would be over the bog standard SCCM way of doing things? I've found it fairly painless to use SCCM to re-image machines and it obviously has a lot more about it than WDS. But if I'm missing out on some cool features than MDT can bring to the table I'd love to know more about them!

Seems slightly overkill for a home network although would be a nice project to get some experience I guess. I can't think of anything else of the top of my head though. Perhaps someone else can help.

What is it exactly you want to achieve?

Glad it works. You might want to turn "Prestaged Content" off. Only reason I mentioned it was in case it was turned on. I've had it cause issues by being enabled for me in the past.

Under monitoring have you checked Distribution Status > Content Status to make sure it's been distributed? Can also check under Deployments > (your java deployment) to see if that gives any info. First thing that comes to mind though it that is your DP set to allow prestaged content? Try turning that off and redistributing.

We have lightspeed for our filtering and then use End Point Protection for our AV on our workstations. No issues at all. Used to use Smoothwall as our filtering but had no end of trouble with iPads.

Yeah that's right. You will need to create it by hand using ADSI edit if you've not had an SCCM installation on site before. There's also an AD Schema Extension you need to run as well. The two areas I'd check are... * Make sure Site Boundaries \ Boundary Groups are set up correctly. (we have IP range and AD site set up and then both of these are added as our "main boundary group") * Admin > Site Config > Server and System Roles > Distribution Point (right click properties) > Boundary Groups (make sure this is set as a boundary group containing your site boundaries)

Wow. That is a big database! I'm guessing that's mostly log files? We're a secondary school and our SIMS db is approx 7 GB and FMS about 700 MB. Although I've known our log files to get absolutely ridiculous before (think we had 40GB before). There was a command we run to shrink the log files but I can't recall it off the top of my head (will dig out my old topic on it when I find it). I seem to recall capita giving us an re-indexing patch which also sorted out the log files. Might be worth giving them a chat. EDIT: Do you have your log files set to SIMPLE or FULL and when was the last time they were truncated? Gave them a shout the other day and they refused to budge because we don't have a support contract. Fair enough and what I expected. I asked how much just for the upgrades and they refused to do it as they were only prepared to offer it as part of a years full entitlement and support and wouldn't just offer us the upgrades. Bit shi**y but that's capita after all. In the end stuck SQL 2008 Express on the 2012 server alongside the SQL 2012 instance and works fine (after tweaking the TCP port).

Took about an hour in the end to do everything. Easy.

The sad thing is by the time it becomes a big enough issue for someone to take it seriously it will probably be too late!

Second this. Air con went at a school I worked at and they bought in a portable unit while waiting for parts for the main unit. They really aren't very good. We had to keep on emptying the water tray every 90 minutes otherwise it would shut it self down and the heat coming out of the back almost completely negated any cooling affect the front had (although granted this wasn't helped by the poor ventilation in the room in the first place).

So how did this turn out in the end?

I was planning on ringing them up today to check on our entitlement but they are on a "whole company training day"! I was under the impression we opted out of the FMS support and upgrades to save on a bit of money a while back but I will call the check in the morning.

Yeah I assumed this was the issue and the solution! The problem is I don't believe we are paying for updates for FMS anymore as it is only being used as a legacy system. It gets accessed a few times a year if that. SOLUS only shows a few small patches and no major upgrades as being available. I guess it's a case of suck it up and keep the old server ticking along for FMS or purchase the upgrades and migrate over. I did try a straight "attach" using SQL Server but it won't let me log in to FMS after doing this. Am I right in thinking that's because the migration tool moves the users \ passwords over with it?
