Of course - the other problem is that the separation between "Admin" and "curriculum" is blurry at best - I have found that pretty much, people want to sit at a PC and be able to work, be it in the MIS system, office stuff or educational programs - not a problem for Admin staff who usually have an office - but often a problem for middle & senior management on the teaching side.

Ours is a Fujitsu and keeps freezing up =- then it shuts down - then we notice and it works again as the ice has usually melted by then. Grrr:mad:

Foxes. We had a deer with its head stuck in the railings yesterday - but no one would let me kill it for venison. Also a tame pheasant lives under a PortaKabin and follows the site staff round in the mornings. All pretty strange as the school is close to the centre of town - not rural at all.

Given VHS quality is so low - pretty much any card would do - but if your PC is not very highly specced - getting one with on board mpeg2 encoding would be a good idea, as it takes the load off the PC - I put a HVR-1300 in my media PC (around £60) - and that chugs along fine.

Too right - biggest waste of money we ever spent - was very glad to see the back of it.

We have a folder with a .dat for each ICT suite in, that only has the details for that room, when a teacher kicks up ABTutor, a script looks at the name of the teacher PC and puts them in the appropriate folder for the room. Us IT techs get access to all the rooms - you can choose a PC by name fairly simply. We did it like this because we had a problem with (some) teachers using the system to control PCs in other teacher's lessons - so we had to lock it down. I believe in the latest version - you can turn off the "Find" button - so should be even easier - though we haven't rolled that one out yet. Also - it works for TS/Citrix sessions too - which is a boon if you use that sort of stuff (we do).

Nice - but I still prefer SequoiaView - makes it really easy to see whats going on - and with a sensible colour scheme see who has a load of videos or music secreted away...

We use CMIS - and are pretty happy with it - its tons easier to maintain than SIMS and is pretty robust nowadays. ePortal is pretty easy for the teachers to use. The down side is that it needs setting up and configuring properly in the first place, which is not always somehing that gets thought about in schools - then there are complaints that it doesn't do this that or the other. As an aside - we've recently heard that they are looking to integrate a decent accounts package (IRIS) into it soon - which will lead to much rejoicing as we can finally ditch FMS (spit spit...)

Uninstall or disable it temporarily - then do some testing for a solution to switching off this "feature"...or make it happen so much that the school begs to replace it with something decent (like AB Tutor)

Another vote for fibre here - though we did have a couple of problems - When we had diggers on site doing some building work - one caught the buried line and just kept lifting - its quite amazing how far it stretched before it snapped it pulled all the fitments off the wall 50m away where the cable ran up the inside of a wall too! Later the kids dug it up and cut it with some shears - which was a pain to have repaired! Apart from that - top notch!

True - but it is free and (at least for us) does work

JUst link the old Civil Service method of "Dynamic Inertia" - leave a problem alone long enough and either someone else will fix it, or it will just be forgotten..

Fortunately the powers that be have reconsidered the move back for us. Practically, you need to ask why its better, and then address any issues that come up. Usually its better because someone knows how to use SIMS and is not keen on retraining - not a great use of £40k or so

Yep - as tosh says - its just a /c argument, I do this just prior to kicking off psshutdown

I clear all the records overnight each day from a script - its not perfect - but it helps. I suppose you could run the script at lesson end or break & lunch time too.

We did it in Northants a few years ago - expect a whole world of pain and misery until it settles down again.
