  10. As I understand it - you HAVE to have 28 days of holiday, though this can include Bank Holidays see Holiday entitlements: the basics : Directgov - Employment - so the Head has discretion over when, but cannot stop you from having your full entitlement - so you must both come to an arrangement over when the days will be taken.

  15. We did a 100 PC refresh last summer - that took the best part of a week - what with moving the old PCs, unboxing the new, cabling, assembling, putting the build on, setting BIOS passwords, testing and getting rid of all the packaging.
  16. I'd second that. At the very least I'd acquire a decently spec'd PC and vitualise up a 2008 environment set up how you want it all to work with virtual clients of each variety and make sure it works in principle before you even touch your existing setup - or you'll just be in for a world of pain.
  17. Too right - Alistaire Campbell was on Newsnight yesterday and reckoned that taking that was a huge error - he should've have got himself a big department - as thats where the power lies.
  18. Well, now we've got a new government committed to "austerity" - we're not going to have to worry about what to do with new tech-toys, we'll be brushing up our old skills of building PCs out of the leftover spare bits n pieces we find at the back of the stock cupboard...'-)
  19. Dunno if you're responsible for photocopiers at your school - if you are - you might want to watch this short clip - quite worrying I thought Copy Machines, a Security Risk? - CBS News Video
  20. Ah - but teachers just can't be managed by anyone except other teachers....whereas of course ICT specialists can be managed by anyone....grrr
  21. Ideally you will have a policy/strategy in place for renewing your equipment on a rolling cycle, etc - so you should be able estimate how much you need - so if you're replacing 50 PCs, you'll need x amount, say £25k just for that, plus everything else. A fixed 20k is not much use at all. I'd suggest that if you haven't got one - you sit down and have a think about it - say 4-5 year replacement of PCs, 5-7 years for servers & network kit (for example), and estimate of consumables & breakages, things you'd like to do to "improve" things and then print it out & have a chat with your line manager/head or whoever.
  22. Bless you! I love that optimism - none of our lot could blow their nose without US OK and worrying about some specious "Special Relationship" that doesn't exist anywhere except in their rather sad minds. Now the French - I really believe that they would do their own thing.
  23. Shame you're not using ESXi - we ported across when our "real" server was playing up - and it was a done deal in under half an hour..
