I have the same set up, but instruct people they can't save directly to the folder and need to save to My Documents and then copy the file to the shared area (that way they always have the original copy too). As I'm relatively happy I've never looked too deep in to it, but I assume it is because Publisher (and any other Office app) will save a temporary file in that directory prior to it saving the final version. Once the final version is saved it will look to delete the temporary version (which of course it can't becuase of permissions) I could be wrong on that, but as I say I'm happy with the fact people can't save directly. Another possibility you have is to add the permission for the Creator/Owner to be able to delete from there. This should let the UserX save direct but prevent UserZ from deleting UserX's file.

I'd agree with Matt40k - don't go putting SIMS and Exchange together. The spec looks ok for a SIMS server... but i'm not sure about the badge on the front of it!

Is this the set up that uses Promiser as the client program? If it is, welcome to world of poorly managed updates, flakey support and possibly having to tweak permissions on stations!

I don't know about a program that would find AND install them for you, but if you're after something to tell you specific makes/models of componants etc, then SiSoft Sandra might be your answer?

It really does take the P***. What was the national average eventually accepted last year for Unison non-teaching members - about 4.5% or something? And that was before the current climate! Who in their right mind would stand up infront of the country and demand a 10% rise for a job which is arguably getting easier (workforce reforms etc). I hope it gets thrown out and not even entertained. If the government can afford to even entertain the possibility then someone should give them a shaking and point out there are more deserving people to give it to.

I'm sure anyone could figure any of us out if they really wanted to / tried hard enough, but it's useful to know how easy it is (or not!) Thanks to all who took the time to reply

Thanks Dave! I'm not sure I agree with some of the things you've listed - but I'm thankful for the reply as it's exactly what I was wanting (i.e. other people's perspectives, irrespective of whether I agree or not!) I'm happy that restrictions (such as budget etc) aren't considered in replies here

If it's only xxGB and moving to somewhere else on the same physical disk, then it shouldn't take that long at all. As a rough guess i'd say about 5mins per 10GB? Sadly I'm still a server 2003 man, but if 2008 has robocopy built in and has the potential to provide a safer move anyway i'd plump for that. You could always test it out on a test directory first to make sure it does what you want (maybe test permissions that way too?) If it's a shared area maybe spend a bit of time checking out what the permissions are before you move (just in case!)

What about innovation? Would you want a traditional feel to the place - desktop PCs, laptops, Interactive Whiteboards in each room etc, or would you want something completely different?

How large are you talking about? Are there likely to be locked files in the tree or is it largely data that no one will be accessing? If you're only talking about a few GB of data, and it was still Easter there (with no one else accessing files etc), then I would be inclined to just copy via explorer. If it's a bit messy and you would like an alternative app, I haven't used Robocopy (although i've seen it mentioned before with good feedback) but have used Beyond Compare. Permissions / security will depend on whether permissions are inheritted from the folder above and if you're moving it to the same volume etc.

Hi All, I know a lot of people reading this may have been / currently be / will be following a BSF or PFI build and be quite restricted in terms of ICT etc.... but.... if you didn't have those restrictions, what would you include in your new school build in terms of ICT? Hi All, I've done a bit of searching on this one but can't find anything! (It's probably more the case that everyone else is used to the concept of blogging and automatically knows the answer to my question anyway!) My question is: Once posted, do EduGeek blogs then get released in to the public (i.e. Will Google sniff them out and display them for keyword searces?), OR, once posted are they only ever available to registered EduGeek users? I guess it depends who you ask that question to. If you ask it to the network team managing it, probably not. If you ask the teachers who know nothing else, then probably not. If you ask someone who has experience of both and wants to ensure overall best value + real-world experience of using IT for learners, then it probably does, yes.

I think it would also be important to ask for the backgrounds of the schools / network management teams which are being asked the question. An RM connect network might get a positive report from a school / manager, but have the school / manager experienced anything else? Are they comparing their product to a well-managed dynamic vanilla system? I come from an RM background, but moved to Vanilla and never looked back. You are only restricted by the bounderies of your own knowledge.

I agree with some points raised here but disagree on others. It really depends what the basis for the request is. If it is simply becuase the Head suspects he's got loads of music in his home directory, or was logging on to the HT's pc, or for some other kind of flimsy reason, then I would either not give the information, or just give the raw basics that I felt comfortable with. If however, the HT is asking as it is a potential Child Protection issue or other legal issue which is being internally / externally investigated then I would say one thing - co-operate. This individual might one day be able to turn round and attempt to use data protection laws against you, but there is not a court in the land that would uphold such a case when the actions were supporting the investigation of a higher offence.

The article was published on April 1st.... I would hazzard a guess it was a similar revelation to the artificial intelligance creation of theirs which discovered it liked Panda's based on analysis of Google Search results!!

I struggled installing an evaluation copy on hardware, and in the end resourted to having to install it on VMWare. Runs fine on there though.

The only reason I sounded suprised is I have loads of them scattered over several schools and have no problems at all (along those lines anyway). I've found their support to be second to none too. What have their support people said to you? (I'm assuming you've logged the issues with them?)

As much as the technical issue might annoy me, I have to smile at myself occasionally when things like this happen (or at least when it happens outside of my work domain - as inside we're responsible for backups etc!) If a user has ultra important information and doesn't archive it elsewhere or back it up elsewhere, what do they think is going to happen...! I'd agree with the previous poster - if those utils haven't worked then I know of no other way to get info out.
