Yes easiest thing is to get some kids to do a social studies experiment, names of partners, kids, pets, bet half would give mothers maiden name. Even forcing staff to change the password isnt that secure. Seconded. If you want to learn something that follows the same syntax but a bit more cutting edge, look at c# or any .NET language. Either that or something like Ruby on Rails or AJAX, etc.

Have a look at "the Drobo" or Buffalo TeraStation. 1TB model for around £329. NAS would be a better solution that trying to link something via USB to the machines.

You can always offer to resit Maths, that is the main one required for IT courses. If you would like to go to college, look at vocational courses such as national diplomas or national certificates. As previously said professional certifications are also good. A+, and Network+ are fairly basic and would give you a good base to build on. Doing the course at a college shouldnt be too expensive. Having the certs also shows employers your skills. If you can get a trial version of server 2003 to install and play about with look at buying the books for the MCP/MCSA/MCSE. 1 exam = Microsoft Certified Professional, 4 = Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator, 7 = Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. I wouldnt look at doing the course for these as they are expensive and i'm assuming that paying £1500 for each exam isnt likely. Buying the book then paying £88 for the exam works out a lot more cost effective! Good luck with it.

Maybe the prisoners would be better behaved? Management might not turn round and say you cant punish someone for damaging equipment...... Thanks for all the suggestions, had tried running wireshark, implemented spanning tree, all yielded no results. Managed to swap the suspected faulty cisco switch out (which is al LOT harder than it sounds when you have no spare switches), asked staff not to use thin clients in 3 of the suites so we could test in a smaller scale, all seemed well. Alll seems to be running well right now! Phew!

We did think that at first but the behaviour isnt the same. Only one behind reception. Dont think they'd have managed to get behind there. Only people who go in there are the receptionists and SLT.......... Maybe i'd better double check that cab. That one sounds interesting, i'll keep an eye on that one, did anything show up in event viewer anywhere to give any clues?

Ok, here's the gist of it: We have a network that was happily chugging along, 160 thin client introduced in summer, working ok. Now: all of a sudden everything is screwed. No changes to any config anywhere. CMIS keeps booting people out, Thin Clients freeze and loose connection to TS. Checked error logs on TCs message saying "The Group Policy client-side extension Folder Redirection failed to execute. Please look for any errors reported earlier by that extension." but that seems to be logged before the thin clients log on. My thoughts, and things i'm currently looking at are: Dodgy nic on DNS server - could loose connection when Thin Clients are trying to connect? Nothing in DNS logs. Failing Switch - seems most likely as it's quite old (Cisco Catalyst 3500) and it is the switch that most servers are plugged into either directly or indirectly. We are actively monitoring the servers, and managed switches including the perhaps dodgy cisco with nagios. Other than the occasional warning bcs no data recieved from host everything seems to be fine. We no data recieved warnings disappear on next polling. Does my hypothesis seem correct? It's very frustrating as all the equipment is telling me it's fine, but something is going wrong somewhere. We've managed to take the cisco out of commission so hopefully tomorrow will tell. If not suggestions of other things i may be over looking would be appreciated!

Tell us more, could the second drop-down contents be dependant on the first? That would eliminate the need for an error message. The error message and post selection valdiation would make it messy.

Theres no other servers in the domain also handling DNS? Just wondering about replication delays. At one point i was having real issues with AD replication when my predecessor set up a second DC. Ballsed it up, reformatted and started again without demoting the server. Just deleted the server from AD. It was only when we got exchange and had problems with connections dropping, services stalling, etc. that we found hidden away in the schema a reference to the previous instance of the DC. Once this was deleted exchange has run like a dream.

DNS issue? Have you checked for any conflicting ip addresses? Does the same server also handle DNS / DHCP?

Except viruses. They only tell you you have one. You then have to run a full scan to delete it.

My, somewhat limited, understaning of it is that: Person A & B recieve attachment via email. Both save to home dirs. System realises that they are the same, copies to SIS common store, we'll call it file(A). Person B edits file and saves it. SIS store realises copies the original file to their home dir and saves it. We'll call it file(B). the original file "file(A)" remains in the SIS store. In your scenario, Person A deletes their (link to) file(A), realises and restores via shadow copies. Because (so i understand) they restore the link (which is in their home dir), it would be file(A) that they see when they open it. I know what you mean about it being cleaned up as no links remain but if it is compatible with shadow copies then that is a seperate copy of it.
