I was reading about _Ric's experience with them but they're around £7k. Does the s7000 include everything thats needed? or are further switches, etc needed

We're currently using VMWare ESXi on a single server. Its currently running 8 virtual servers but getting nowhere near it's capacity - except for storage. My idea (before it gets shot down by SLT) is for a SAN to hold the VMs, allowing us to add further hosts later. Looking for suggestions on what I should put in a proposal. I'm looking for decent equipment, but finance is exceptionally tight! Suggestions on iSCSI, FC or SAS direct attach (minimum of 3 hosts to make it interesting). Guess I'm after a shopping list, item by item! Thanks Lee

You're thinking of paying for it? surely LinITX would lend a (fully branded) full system considering the flood of extra traffic they've just had and the fact it will be showcased to geeks with budgets at bett.

Had a flight a couple of years back with "Captain Miles Long". Maybe the parents were cruel with the name, but he chose the career!

Hardware: HP for desktops, servers and infrastructure, used to only buy Toshiba for laptops but we've had quite a few issues with the VGA output recently and toshiba loosing the 3 yr warrenty details for a batch of 30 laptops and another couple of individual ones.. needless to say, i'll be switching to HP. Software: Currently enjoying our new Swyx VOIP phone system and VMWare ESXi - drastically reduced our physical number of servers and given us much more scope for implemeting new things! Personally: I like my iPhone and the best technology ever......... Aeroplanes! Gotta love those trips to Las Vegas! (or insert other fav holiday destination!)

We've got our website internal and a VLE elsewhere, we dont really use SINA for anything. The response I was given when i asked the question about withdrawing from it was that it was heavily subsidised and bundled in with the core package so they couldn't split the cost. My opinion on it: You PAY for SINA????? It costs so much you have to heavily subsidise it.......?!?!?!?

I don't Think exchange 2003 standard single server install natively supports it. There are ways around it, some break webmail though so you may want to check you have not broken anything else.

Which version is exchange? 2003 or 2007? Standard or enterprise? Did it connect prior to the 3.0 upgrade?

Spec sounds plenty for a primary with 100 pcs. You should only think about 8GB RAM if you're going to virtualise a couple of PCs (ESXi is free and pretty good) or will be installing 64bit server software. How much have they quoted and which company? (PM if you dont want to shout it out) I've not always been too impressed with Link2Ict's "recommended" companies / products.

Sorry Matt, wasnt trying to bite your head off, was just doing a bit of trolling.. Did try and warn with the smilies. I would also be annoyed at ebuyer passing my details to a "sister" company. Didnt know ebuyer used to be called by any other name. Learn something new every day. Yeah they do do them, but their not very practical. I suppose their a bit like mini-bars in hotels. Everything needs to go into a specific spot and then it registers that an item is missing.

the clue is in the name ebuyer. not PC components buyer. they are an online store not specifically an IT retailer. I bought my house 3 years ago and bought my microwave and vacuum from them! The non-IT stuff isnt a new trend. Besides maybe they'll be able to fully integrate IT into your kitchen. TV/Internet terminals embedded into the worktops, great for menus or watching tv while having your morning coffee, or a fridge that re-orders it's own stock from asda or tescos et al. Makes sense to me.

I personally dont like CC3 (never looked at 4) infact our local infants school were so unimpressed they dumped them after about 6 months, they were having a complete nightmare with the workstation installs, roaming profiles, etc. It all depends on your available time. Also do you work there full-time or are you shared (ooh err) between several schools. Do you have full control or is there a ICT co-ordinator getting involved adding users, trying to do some of the management. There is nothing really that RM offer that cant be achieved in a vanilla setup even if you do have to go out and buy the occasional third party app for it. To put it simply, which do you have more of, time or money?

Are you trying to connect via the machine name or IP address? If machine name - try IP address, if that works, then it looks like a DNS issue.

Does anybody have any experience of Swyx as a telephony system. Our current system has gone up a certain creek without a paddle. Being recommended Swyx, but just wondered if anybody had heard of it or used it?

Not touching with a barge pole doesnt sound fair, but anyway, you can't get experience without a job. You can be seen as a dabbler but networking your home or repairing friends PCs will only get you so far on an application, regardless of whether you have a degree or not. I would put somebody with people skills that shows a willingless or an ability to learn, ahead of others - again regardless of degree or not. From the 64 applications we recieved we only interviewed 8. 56 candidates were rejected whether they had a degree, 5 years experience or no experience. The point i'm trying to make is that it's all well and good saying 3 years experience is better than a degree, but if it's 3 years changing toners and replacing mice (BSF anyone?), with no desire to improve themselves, the systems or try to use new technologies then it's not necessarily good experience.

To me that comment is very short sighted. My current team consists of myself, a Computer Science graduate about to finish a part-time masters degree, a computing grad, one member of staff who started at uni, but never finished and somebody who didnt go to uni. All have their own strengths and weaknesses. It takes all-sorts. Do I feel that the degrees have taught me anything that I either use or couldn't have learnt myself? Probably not, but like it or not, employers look for degrees, MCSEs, etc. Especially as you work your way up the ladder. In answer to the OPs question about the 3 years experience or a degree for the role of a IT Tech, I'd interview both, the final decision would be taken by a panel of at least 3 and personality goes a long way. I would like to see some sort of quals and certs from the non-grad candidate though. The last time we advertised a post we had 65 applicants, the application needs to stand out. A non-existant quals section or supporting evidence/experience section stand out in the wrong way. One other point that would stick in my mind is why isnt the guy with 3 years experience looking to progress to a NM, etc. (obviously somebody that started very young would be an exception to this!) Above all else showing a desire to learn and improve go a long way.
