DCHP all the way. Even when it's for printers or workstations that need a contstant IP address so LA can remote in for MIS support I just use DHCP with reservations based on the MAC address. This means that when the device connects to the DHCP server they always get the same address, no other device gets it as they dont have the same MAC (unless they are cloning). Only time I might consider static is for the DHCP server (i.e. so it has it's ip address before the DHCP service starts) or for key switches (or for Wireless Access Points), which I want to get the correct IP if the server is not available.

I thought the same. It did sound like you were saying that dual ports weren't much use in windows RabbieBurns, rather than that the article isnt much use for his current situation. lol

if you think of a server as a room and each network port as a door then imagine that 100s or 1000s of people want to get in and out. More doors = faster people can get in and out. Can also be used for port teaming as domino suggested (although i'm not sure it has to be supported by switches depending on manufacturer of the nic), or if you use MS network load balancing you can have several servers listening on one IP which is assigned to one port on each server, they then use the other nic to communicate with each other and the network.

Thats a bit harsh. Tony has never been Pro-BSF, just not totally anti-BSF. BSF on the whole wont be a bad thing for schools, it's just the IT part of it that we all have issues with. Tony has to look at the bigger picture as part of his role on senior leadership. Anyway, not trying to turn this into a BSF debate, there's far too many of those on here. Congratulations Tony.

Don't shoot the messenger. Yes i doubt RM will be too impressed with you going on residential trips, or that the school will want to pay for you to go as you will technically no longer work for them. Speak to your head, voice your concerns about the working arrangements and ask if they can be put into your contract. I know the feeling, once the benefits no longer outweigh the negative points of the job, it's time to start looking.

I was under the impression that all staff were to be TUPE'd (Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment)) and kept on their initial contract (inc. salary) and that their jobs are secure for x amount of years. I believe it has been suggested that the contract winners have in some cases offered the new tupe'es new contracts (with higher salary). Once the new contract is signed they are free to release them after a few months. Schools can keep certain staff if they like but must offer them a new position, i.e. an IT tech could be kept as an IT Teaching Assistant. NM/SM could be kept as a database admin, etc.

The £2k pay cut is one thing but are they giving you a car/fuel allowance for the extra travelling? That could be quite costly if they are expecting you to do lots of travel as part of your job. Like others have said, if you can afford a £2k pay cut, go for it. If you are young with no wife/kids/mortgage, then long term it might be better. Try to find out how quickly they will push you through the courses. Maybe study one or two of the modules youself from books and sit the exam (£88), if it means you get the increased salary faster it might be worth it. The microsoft courses generally take 1 week. Are they putting you on the entire week course or the odd day here and there. I'm assuming they arent going to push you on all 6 courses in the first 6 weeks, so they may spread them out over 12 - 24 months.

I think you get more rep power depending on who thanks you, i.e. a member with more rep power thanking you is better than somebody with less rep power. If that makes sense.

Backbone is fiber, new switches will have dual personality ports. Good point there about client NICs Nick, checked out thin client spec and they are only 10/100Base-T. No point plugging them into gigabit switches just yet. I'm thinking that as long as my uplinks are gigabit then 100Base-T will suffice in the short term for clients to plug into, with gigabit in certain key areas.

Just out of interest what speed is your network infrastructure running at? We have a large number of unmanageable HP 2324 switches running at 100Base-T, we're looking at upgrading a few, but not sure whether to get a 1000Base-T switch or just get manageable 100Base-T. What is everybody else's infrastructure running at? Cost is a bit of an issue, but it's not worth buying 100Base-T if i really need to be running 1000Base-T. By the way we have thin clients, which is why i'm slightly leaning towards 1000Base-T. Thanks

Dont know about any other models, i've only tested with 2600n and 2605dn. You might want to try updating the firmware though. Some of my older 2600n's didnt give any data back until they were upgraded.
