Bugger. Thanks for the link, but not sure i can be justifying any cost for my convenience. Especially when i can use logmein.com (etc) to connect to a server and view nagios that way. Should soon be getting VPN access sorted soon so i suppose that will solve the problems for me, but it would be nice to have general access via the web

Not sure if i've put this in the right place, if it's possible or even if the title makes sense but here goes: I have a Server 2003 server hosting school website (php, MySql, Joomla - yes webman et al. i know i could've used linux but the previous one was ASP.Net and we still use a bit of that ), it is accessible through council firewall. I have an internal server running ubuntu & apache and hosting a nagios installation. What i would like to do is see my nagios stuff outside of school. Is there anyway that i can set IIS so that if somebody goes to http://www.schoolsite/nagios/ it looks at http://internalserver/nagios and displays the content to them. (all securityified obviously) Not sure i explained that at all well.

Our techs (i was one for 2 years) have been working in the server room since time forgot. Finally got a new office (read: converted toilet), that is almost completed. In the end we played the: Health & Safety: Parts, dead pc's, sound levels, heat; Physical security of property: little storage = things left lying around, that sometimes go walkies, plus it would be quite easy for somebody open up the door chuck a bottle of water in (it happened - right down my back.) which could land on a rather expensive server. Data security: with people walking in and out of server room to fetch techies, there stands a chance that personal details of staff / pupils could be seen. If you are trying to prove a point i always find it best to stage a situation. Maybe call somebody in just as you are switching all the servers on (when they go really loud and do the fan test).

To be honest i swear by HP. We've had 120 HP Desktops and had almost 0 problems with them.

@meastaugh1: The main problem i;ve been having is with 2X i think. I've been trialling it and really struggling to get a connection, even as an admin, with no persistant connection, when i click connect, it says active, then does nothing and then shows disconnected . Removing it and using NLB which doesnt seem to be causing me the same problem. But we'll see. The servers i have are HP DL380's each has 2 3GHz Dual Core CPUs and 4GB RAM, cant really say they're under spec'd.

_Ric, just out of interest, have you found any way of removing the Shutdown button from the HP Thin Connect user session?

Anybody had any experience of running the Promissor ALAN testing "administrator" (client) software in a TS environment? Our Ass Head (deliberate abbreviation) has decided that we need to do 180 test simutaneously. Not sure how this will work and have a number of concerns. Any of your experiences would be appreciated.

I had: "Main" server: Dual Core Intel Xeon 3GHz, 2GB Ram runs DNS, DHCP, Impero Monitoring, Staff user areas. Used to also run CMIS. Server 2: 2x Dual Core Intel Xeon 3GHz, 2GB Ram, 50% Student areas, Hold applications that can run over network. VCD Server. Server 3: 2x Intel III 1.4GHz 1GB Ram, 50% Student areas, ALAN testing software. Exhange Server Intel Dual Core 3GHz, 1GB Ram ePortal server, 800MHz, 256MB RAM, Server 2000. Web server: 500MHz, 256 RAM That was all i had until i pursuaded them to give me some investment this summer. I have now retired the last 2. First 4 still same, although server 3 may be retired and used for testing soon. Web server: 2x Intel Dual Core 3GHz, 2GB Ram, May host VLE also if we go internal. If not could use as virtual server host. MIS Server: 2x Intel Dual Core 3GHz, 4GB Ram, Hosts CMIS and ePortal. 2x TS servers: 2x Intel Dual Core 3GHz, 4GB Ram, Hosts Kids TS Sessions, have a third of similar spec but holding off at the moment as they seem to be holding up. Quad Server: 2x Intel Quad Core 2GHz, 4GB Ram, at the moment hosting a virtual server for Spiceworks Help desk. Plans: Retire Server 3, and take student / staff areas of server 1 & 2. Buy 3TB server to store user areas. SV1 used as DFS for staff areas to Storage Server. SV2 used as APP server and DFS for 50% Pupil areas Virtualise DNS / DHCP server on Quad, as a back-up. Virtualise ALAN testing S/W and WSUS on QUAD. Put 1 more TS server in place. To stay as they are: Exchange Server Web server MIS Server 2x TC server. EDIT: SV1 also does the sophos AV, and print serving. I might give these roles else where also.

Wasnt necessarily the band width that was the problem, it was the constant dimultaneous connection attempts when nobody tried to connect, the session timed out and then re-connected. The NLB doesnt include many decent load balancing or management features unfortunatley.

Take a look at windows built in Network Load Balancing (NLB) it's more round-robin than true load balancing, i.e. dish it out to TS 1, then TS 2, then TS 3, etc. , rather than check which has most free RAM, CPU. I trialled 2X and although it was good we had various problems with connections timing out. If you do use NLB be careful about setting clients as persistant, i did this and tested during half term - worked fine, however once all the staff and pupils came back and started logging on to 120 desktops & 100+ staff laptops, the 150 thin clients trying to constantly connect flooded my network in much the same way as a loop back would. Maybe it's because literally every one of my switches is at full capacity.

When i said 192.168.1.1 is usually a router i was suggesting in a domestic setup. I know you have set your server to be that. I was merely suggesting that the conflict maybe because somebody has bought device in from home. Maniac's suggestion on how to find the exact location is a good one. you may also need to unplug the sever also.

192.x.x.x is a reserved ip range (only used for internal addressing on a network) http://www.duxcw.com/faq/network/privip.htm 192.168.1.1 is usually a router, not an ip address given to a client. This might sound like a silly suggestion, but if you search for a wireless signal do you get any that you think shouldnt be there? I wouldnt be suprised if a "tech literate" teacher (is there such a thing?) has gone out and bought, or brought in, their own wireless router so that they dont have to have a cable hanging. Not many people would realise that a wireless router (with DHCP) and a wireless access point are different, and the wrong one could cause no end of trouble, failing that if it's not wireless, maybe just a router, maybe someone who shares an office or has a shortage of network sockets??? Hope this helps.

Tips for priority: 1st Priority: Something effecting whole school (i.e. internet down, server crash, e-reg problems, etc) 2nd: Something effecting a large number of users (i.e. an entire class), this could be a problem with teachers laptop, when they are trying to teach, etc. 3rd: Something effecting admin staff stopping them from doing their jobs 4th: Something effecting a single user i.e. a password change as other have said something from SLT/SMT, although only effecting a single person would jump in higher becasue the give you the budgets, etc and you need them on-side. If you want to sugar-coat that last bit something like "they lead the school so a problem they may have is in effect hindering many people", just like cutting the head off a snake. The test you will likely get are fairly basic, it's not going to be a mis-configured DNS server or anything like that. Check things are plugged in, make sure cables are in the right way (upside down IDE cables on a floppy are difficult to spot). If its a projector, check it;s on the right input, etc. Check simplist things first (and a proper check), nothing worse than giving a quick glance at a network cable and saying its fine if isnt quite in enough to connect. You sound tech-savy, try not to be too nervous, and show a bit of personallity.

I've just swapped CMIS over to a new server. It is now asking for the license key. Anybody know where this will be stored (i.e. specifically) on the old server? Thanks. Lee

Thanks everyone: parent. D'oh. No wonder i couldnt find it. It's upstream in tinyproxy so thats what i was looking for.

I am currently playing with dansguardian (free edition). I have managed to configure tinyProxy but if i plan to use dansguardian with more than a couple of users i'm told squid would be best. As our internet has to go through our council filter i need to set the upstream proxy. I could find the option in tinyproxy but not squid. Anyone have a clue? Using Ubuntu. Sorry if none of this made sense. It's been a bad week.
