  1. We had a partial powercut the other day, some of the computers worked, but all the infrastructure was on the fuse that had blown. Some girls knocked on the door: "why isn't the internet working" "There's a problem with power" "nah man [see it's a quality school], you should get wireless" "erm, ok, but 1: Wireless still has to plug back in to the router, so it's not completely wireless and 2: there's no power to power the wireless. When they invent wireless power and we can afford a huge generator we'll let you know" Then her mates started taking the p155 out of her. Also had other staff asking if we could plug our (hardwired to mains) 42U cab full of switches into the few plugs that worked, which would have been ok, except that the cab that they connected to had no power anyway!
  2. Jeeze, talk about jumping out of the frying pan into the fire! Pink and white open neck shirts are going to be so much better than shirt and tie. Lets just hope every male at that school are "leg" men otherwise it could be worse than the skirts!
  3. Looks very good. I have pointed our ICT teachers in the direction. Agree with the SCORM compliance thing, might be worth looking at if thats the way you want to go. Just a couple of suggestions though, when you click on a menu option i.e. module 1, the menu changes, but the page stays the same. It might be worth changing the page to the introduction section within the Module 1 context. Also i notice a lot of your content has spaces in the names which then appear as "%20" e.g. www.ictpro.org/module%201/task%201.htm You may want to consider adjusting this, maybe use an underscore instead. It's not causing you any major problems, but some webservers dont handle spaces particularly well, and if you distribute scorm compliant packages, it makes sense to get rid of things like that.
  4. I'm not sure how this will effect schools. They seem to be an entity to themselves. I, for example, have some responsibility for Assessment and Timetabling, I cant imagine those being on a standard JD for a systems manager. I now also (in last 6 weeks) line manage not only the 2 ICT techs, but the 2 D&T techs and 2 science techs, plus the possibility of 1-2 technical admin staff. I think the Gov / LA will say what is standard and what pay they should get, but i think schools will have some flexibility with regards to any extra stuff. I hope.
  5. Bit geeky but how about after famous computer scientists? Babbage, Turing, Rivest, Shamir, Adleman, Dijkstra, Hellman, Diffie, Merkle, Knuth, von Neumann, Shannon, Hamming, and one especially for all the lady geeks: Lovelace;
  6. Is that slander or libel? If anybody is going to be swayed by biased / unbacked up findings then they are not a "reasonable person" and shouldnt be in IT. That being said, if there are problems with a product, give reasons. I would automatically see rants not backed up as coming from a competitor, or somebody with a vested interest.
  7. Do not do more revision!!!! Have a good breakfast instead regards Simon Yeah you gotta have a good brekkie. I always used to read MY brief / important point notes before the exam. Depends on the time of the exam, distance to travel etc.
  8. Best advice i can give (and i've been through lots of exams!) is stay calm. Read the questions carefully. Nothing says you have to do the questions in a particular order. You can leave space and start another question. Giving a good answer on a question you know will improve your confidence. Get an early night, get up early and do a bit more revision (if you have a chance). After the exam dont discuss it with friends, the whole "what did you put for x", or dwell on any questions/answers you werent confident of. And most of all, never, never, never, read through your notes again after the exam, you will be more critical on yourself than any examiner. Just move on to the next one. It's past, nothing you can do, why stress.

    Servers

    Ah right so two dual/quad cores = 2 server 2003 Licences. Got it. Thanks for all the help guys.

    Servers

    oh while i'm on the subject are there any hidden costs between dual and quad such as server 2003 licensing?

    Servers

    Sorry Ric_ there was no option C it's either 2 duals or 2 quads.

    Anybody that sells HP. It's a HP offer nothing to do with resellers. You may have to move quickly though. http://www.hp.com/uk/proliantcpu for details. Check out the link for qualifying servers, gives the code of the required CPU. You pay for it then claim back the cash from HP. Just make sure your invoice will say May on it.

    Servers

    btw, not sure this would effect opinions but the servers will be used for terminal services. As i see it: 2x (2GHz x4) = 16GHz 2x (3GHz x2) = 12GHz Not sure whether its better to have 8 2Ghz or 4 3Ghz;

    Servers

    Right about to buy a server, but i've just noticed that HP have a free processor offer on, which doesnt include the 2 processor server i had in mind. But it does have the same model but with only 1 processor (and less ram) in a number of flavours. If it was your choice which way would you go: Originally wanted: HP DL380 G5 High performance 2x 3GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon 4 GB RAM 4MB Cache Memory Choice Between: a) HP DL380 G5 Base 1x 3GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon + 1 Free 3 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon 2 GB RAM (would pay for upgrade to 4 GB) 4MB Cache Memory b) HP DL380 G5 Base 1 x 2GHz QUAD Core Intel Xeon + 1 Free 2 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon 2 GB RAM (would pay for upgrade to 4 GB) 8MB Cache Memory So considering the processors and Cache Memory which would you choose?
  15. Exact same problem in our LEA, I used dreamweaver to do ours but since the Joomla edu pack was released i am serously thing of buying hosting. But was quoted £50 for having the DNS changed by the LEA :twisted: Get your own server and ask them to forward web.schoolname.city.sch.uk to your internal server. Then you can control exactly what technologies you want.
  16. Will it also require a new installation of eportal?
  17. no prob, btw welcome to edugeek
  18. But we were/are affected so should have been called.
  19. I think that the issue here is that not all the calls werent recieved. I for one wasnt notified. I agree a phone call would have been better than an email but if the call was never made/received email would have been a good back-up.
  20. However, if you click on the file, and then click "Create" it will create a copy of the file that you CAN edit.
  21. the subscript 's' signifies that it is a system report. No editing i'm afraid.

    Interview

    You could always try and find out what systems they have: is it RM, Viglen, Vanilla? They may ask you about their MIS - remember if they ask about one you havent yet used your answer is: "I havent used that one, but i have used x which is also a management information system and provides similar functionality, i'm also a very quick learner and confident i could pick up a new system very quickly" They may ask how you feel you can take the school forwards, what your vision for ICT in education is. Experience of web development, VLE's, etc. You could always ask for a tour, that would give you a brief snapshot of how many pc's in classrooms, servers etc.
  23. Yeah having some sort of "Sign up here for instant updates" type of thing, or even RSS would be better. Who wants to look at a static page every day "just in case"
  24. I'd agree with that statement. We should have been notified as soon as it was discovered. Most people would have done the upgrade yesterday afternoon or stayed behind after work or even come in early this morning. A lot of angry people. The big question is will LINK2ICT be staying around until 6pm like all the technicians / NM / SMs will have to incase of any problems?
  25. @btdt: I dont mind ignoring the error, I'm more annoyed that i called at 1:30 and wasnt informed about the second upgrade in a week. Why was this error not picked up sooner in testing? Surely in your test cases you have permanently excluded pupils? Sorry to rant at you, i'm sure it's not your fault. I'm sure this will be a pretty heated thread. @limbo: sorry mate, i knew about the upcoming upgrade. Should have thought to mention it on here. Big thing to remember: census = upgrades where upgrades >= 1
