Ah, the everyday battles of working in ICT in education. We have similar situation with joke emails. I'm not against them, in moderation, but when i check our exchange message log theres loads of "FW: how many men does it take......" etc. Now, how exactly can I implement a policy, which has to go through the head, when it's the head that most of these emails originate from! Not quite on the scale of the LimeWire thing, but perfect example of the difficulties we face on a day to day basis. Schools see us as there to serve their needs, which in a way we are, but we should almost be seen as external entities, paid to provide a service the school uses. They see the network as "theirs" without any consideration of what impact things they do have.

ours does for google but not for yahoo. Strangley enough doing an image search for "p" or any other single letter via google doesnt get the same results.

Ok, here's a new one on us. If you do a yahoo image search with safe search off (which the config page isnt blocked by our LA (@eduabncs any chance?) ) it is very predictive..... just an image search for the letter "p" or "c" or pretty much any letter manages to find hardcore p0rn.... And before you ask, it was one of the kids who told a teacher. We dont just sit there searching for random letters all day. honest Just thought you all might like to check your filters.

Why do you say that? Have you taken into account the dubious websites that some staff visit that could introduce a virus or other nasties onto the network? I think that was his point webman I think in todays climate it is unrealistic for the ICT Co-ordinator to line manage NM's. Like others have said, personal priorities may take effect. However ICT co-ordinators shouldnt be taken out of the process altogether. They are the side of ICT that parents see, policies will need their backing whether we like it or not. I occasionally butt heads with our ICT co-ordinator about things, but i'm lucky in that we get on, so any disagreements are usually spoken about calmly and points explained. Try not to get too agressive with the ICT co-ordinator, but at the same point she needs to understand that schools are now businesses. You have responsibilities to other areas also.

During term time Shirt, Tie, trousers (as opposed to jeans, not that i would come in trouserless.... that would be silly). during the hols we can wear pretty much whatever. The DT tech can dress more casual as he's cutting wood, etc all day. Science techs seem to get away with wearing whatever they want.

Done that too. Shows a grey (inactive computer) I think i've discovered the problem. The "Altiris eXpress Server" service seems to start but when you refresh it has stopped again. I think the problem is that i've got 2 network cards on the server. I think it's trying to bind to the wrong one.

tried all that. I'm thinking i have a problem with multicasting. I want to set the actual ip address on the client but cant find anything..... I hate computers.....

Do you have the url? Everything i've found on the HP website says go to the altiris website. The altiris website only really has instructions for the full console. Do you run the script on the server or client? I cant get the client to even show up in the altiris console, to be able to deploy anything.......

Did you remember to change the jumper settings? Causes all sorts of problems if you have 2 drive saying master

Ok, Had my nice HP thin client arrive today for testing. When with advice from forum to order linux one. Now only problem i have is how do i get it to connect to the blasted Altiris software!!!! All i want to do view client details, and deploy options globally, such as automatically connecting to our server via RDP. Am i completely grabbing the wrong end of the stick? Can anybody offer some advice. Thanks. Lee

Similar thing here. I hate to say it but it's office politics. If the face fits and you do a good job they will do their best to keep you for as long as possible. @Chris: Remind them how indispensible you are and that to replace you they would need to pay £x amount, and cant guarantee what that person is like. Finding job ad's for the same position in either the same LA or nearby LA's will also give you ammunition (or something to apply for)

Now the next question is: what makes somebody currently satisfied with their salary. @Chris: Is your LA doing the Single Status grading review? Could you get hold of a standard network managers JD from HR? If you can show that you are doing more than that you may be able to get some more. Failing that look for a new job... and dont be quiet about it. Tell someone who values your contributions and has the ear of the head.

Theres 3 measurements to consider width, depth and height. I thought the width was standard, otherwise stuff wouldnt fit, and it was only the depth that changes....... Obviously any panelling doors etc would change width slightly but surely the internals have to be the same.

OK, here's a related question: Who writes your policies? ICT Technicians/Network Manager/Systems Manager or ICT Co-ordinator. I'm in a position where i want to re-write some of our policies (namely AUP) but the ICT Co-ordinator is digging her heels in saying it's her job. I understand that as ICT Co-ordinator being responsible for whole school ICT she would want to write it for pupils but why the staff one, especially as it pertains to the network security.
