Hi guys, I'm looking at thin clients at the moment, as a possible solution for a department (so looking at about 30 pcs). Just have a few questions as i've no experience of thin clients and need to feed back to ass. head. My understanding is that thin client boots in to Windows CE then creates terminal services session to server (or network boots via PXE into term services). Is this correct? Does the user have to create the terminal services connection themselves or is it automatic? Obviously the demand on the server will be quite big, especially if 30 users all logged on and ran MS office, what sort of spec server should run that without too many problems? Are there many issues with bandwidth? or would you suggest storing the server nearby, plugged into same switch. What licensing issues arise? For example if i install Office 2003 on the server, would i need one license? or would i need licenses for all the sessions? Thanks in advance!

That wouldnt work for most schools. If an order is placed on 15th march, it is for the current financial year, and subsequently even if you invoiced us/we paid after 6th April, if would need to balance last years accounts. Thanks for the offer tho! We may look you up in a month or so!

Can't say i'll miss sky one. i never watch it, although i'm an avid 24 fan. Thank god for torrents.... i mean boxsets released in time for chirstmas. Sky are pulling this childish stunt because they cant compete with the package Virgin are offering, t.v., internet, telephone and now mobile, factor in to that the fact that satellite is an inferior recieve only technology. If we are headed for a truely tv-on-demand future, cable will be the way it will happen. Sky are having one last go at trying to grab customers by keeping the best channels and programmes for themselves, in order to play the numbers game. Anyone remember the advert a few years ago, if you dont get sky one, you dont get jack???? They just want to pull all the old posters out of storage again. I cant see Virgin pulling their channels from sky, they will take the moral high-ground on this one, especially if it goes to monopolies commision. If they loose that then maybe they will. I'll be looking for Virgin to get some decent (read: recent) programmes / series on their on-demand service tho, or maybe pass the savings on from no sky fees in better internet connection....... Maybe they could partner up with google..........

I've not seen anything regarding how amount will be figured out. I think they usually tax you on what it cost - depreciation. anybody? Although it is four years old, laptops were more expensive then. Wasnt accusing you of playing games, i know what it's like working in ICT in schools, but i had a teacher give me a funny look today when they walked in and i was looking at "The Dude" network mapping software. I think they thought it was some strategy game or something, all those clouds, globes and lines, appearing over the screen.

If it's a work laptop I would suggest not buying one for games for the following reasons: 1. How can you then tell teachers they arent allowed to install games because of network security, piracy, etc. 2. How can you defend complaints that you sit playing games during work, even if you arent. 3. The visual studio solution will not apply to you unless you have the source code, which i doubt. Has the company recently sent out an upgrade? have you installed office 2003 / 2007 (not necessarily access)? Do you have a back-up? Your best bet might be to contact the suppliers of the software and see what they say...... We have a few horrible programs that have a similar kind of set up...... Good Luck!

I usually hate CMIS upgrades, but i think that this time it is very much needed. So many problems were caused by the last upgrade that need fixing as a top priority, that there was no alternative. Let's just hope this one doesnt bring too many of it's own problems with it!

Although you cant (i'm pretty certain) sit the NT4 MCSE exams anymore, you could install the server in a virtual environment and play about with it. I believe you only need 3 quotes total. Also i'm pretty certain that only applies if the order will exceed £10k, although individual schools, LA's may have their own threshold for that.

I would assume there are implications with deleting stuff off users own personal pen-drives. Now, if you were to issue students with a pen-drive the school "owned" and you could block all other drives, that would be different.

I've mentioned it before, but i use AD infinitum, great little tool, creates all users, group membership and any AD property you can think of, folders, shares as well as setting NTFS/Share permissions. Cost about £100. Nothing extortionate.

We use a year identifier e.g this years year 7 are 06 next year will be 07, followed by first 5 letters of surname, followed by first letter of first name so john smith in year 7 would be: 06smithj Where there is a problem with clashing we will either usually give them: 06smitjo, 06smithjo or some other alternative. Therefore no problems with moving in to year 8, 9, etc Do you create your users and the folder shares manually or use a tool for it?

Dont get me wrong, the newness kept them safe for a while, but unfortunately, we dont have the option of moving the pc's every few months / year. Nice suggestion though, and if we had the network/power points in each room i'd be very tempted! I've considered getting a glass cabinet with thick rubber-gloves stuck in it, so the kids cant get their grubby little hands over them but they school wont shell out for it. Sounds like the best idea to me. PS/2 to USB convertors also usually have 2 connectors so you could connect a PS/2 mouse and keyboard to the same USB socket. Unless somebody in an infants school etc. has any contacts.

I'm not saying to refuse to do the website. I also see it as my responsibilty to implement but same as you, i see the actual content as other peoples reponsibility, i.e. heads statement, departmental stuff. I just put it on there. I'm just saying I wouldnt want to scan anything for it. People have to give me anything as digital in the first instance. IF there is a photo that they MUST have but cant get again i.e. visit of VIP, then I MIGHT make an exception, or point them in the direction of a scanner or a hungry looking technician if they supply biscuits/cake/alcohol/all of the preceeding!. Dont put yourself down _Bat_ any idiot is capable of using a scanner (except the ppl as SimpleSi's place which is how this all started!), I would suggest that creating a website is a valid use of your time, spending 2 days scanning photo's might not be.
