I'm having a bit of trouble getting Windows Server 2003 network load balancing working correctly. At the moment it's running in a virtualised setup for testing / learning how; but will eventually be actual servers. I've gone in to network load balancing manager and set up a new cluster called "tcservers" - ip x.x.x.1 and added 2 virtual hosts each with 2 network cards. I've selected Local Area Connection 2 for both, and given: tc_server1 the ip x.x.x.100 (conn 2); priority = 1 tc_server2 the ip x.x.x.101 (conn 2); priority = 2 i've set a rule for the cluster of start: 3389; end:3389; Protocol: both; Mode: Multiple; Load: Equal; Affinity:None; If i try and Remote Desktop to tcservers it puts me through to tc_server1, when it trys to send me to tc_server2 it times out. I've added entries in DNS for both. On tc_server2 checking the local area connection, shows a lot of out-going traffic, but virtually nothing coming in (8 packets in 17hrs) Any ideas?

Maybe you could highlight that you wish there were no need for you to have their passwords but that because of the way the LA do things you need the information to get their issues resolved as soon as possible. Sounds like the LA need to pull their fingers out and sort something. I hate it when quick and dirty workarounds get left in place because it's "easier".

We once had a kid HEADBUTT a laptop. The laptop screen bled out. laptop = B.E.R. Now i insist that all TFT's are hard glass. If there was only going to be one broken i might consider saving the money. Anyway i cringe everytime i see a kid with their messy greasy fingers touching our glass ones, let alone if it was a non-glass one.

Maybe AB would be best for you. The word filter worked for us as we managed to trace back some posters that were appearing round school that had a pic of a teacher and unflattering comments. I actually found it quite amusing but the teacher wasnt impressed.

Depends on the amount of PC's and consoles. We have 5 consoles and that is fine for us (200 clients atm). One in LRC; 1 in server room, and 3 for ICT teachers. Will probably have to buy a few more soon though. From what i've read on the AB website, impero offers a few more functions, like key word filtering, on any window / document, that warn you if a pupil has typed someting they shouldnt; and being able to block any window or application. If you are serious about getting a system, trial a few. Compare functionality and cost and do whats best for your school. You are the only one who can make the decision really.

On your server where CMIS is installed, you should have the "facility data controller" open that.

It's actually a very nice program. We found it last year. We trialled it for 30 days at the end of the summer term and were so impressed we bought it over the summer. VERY reasonably priced also. Just an upfront license fee for the one server app, each client license and console license. No yearly renewal fees, except for maintenance which was around a £100 if i remember correctly, will get that confirmed. One of the best things i like it is the support and fact that they are willing to listen to suggestions and try and implement them as soon as they can. Think of an idea (sensible one), email to them or suggest it on their forums and as soon as they can it's distributed automatically in the next update. We've found them very helpful whenever we've had minor issues.

I cant find this on our server, is it a paid for add on? Where in midlands are you tosca925? we're a brummy school and it's on ours.

Toshiba portege M200 tablet PC. Also bought the *very* nice docking station and seperate monitor. Upgraded to 1GB Ram, although it's getting a bit slow recently, so i might have to up that.

Don't you have a cupboard to hide in? I have several places to hide in school. My number one is my cupboard, but staff have finally learnt the days I work in that school so ignoring the knocks with the excuse that I wasn't there doesn't fly now. My number two is the back of the ICT Suite behind a wall, invisible from 95% of the rest of the ICT Suite. My ICT coordinator soon found out about this and has told everyone to check there when looking for me. My number three is in the corner of the library, which again, is invisible to 95% of the rest of the library. There is a decent computer in the corner where I can get some work done. Unfortunately the library is also a corridor and is too risky now, especially as I have been caught there several times already. Of course, the person who knows the school best is the caretaker. First thing tomorrow, I must ask him for other decent hiding places . Then there is my mobile... darn, I'm gonna have to think of something to do with that. James, James, James, now you've just posted all your secret hiding places on t'internet. Hope your ict co-ordinator doesnt lurk on here.

lol, but how often in schools will they let you have a farm / test network. Even just having one machine dedicated to running VMware server, running loads of instances of machines, for testing, is a real battle.

The bloody hoops i'm having to jump through at the moment to replace some 500 MHz & 900MHz servers is amazing. They're like well didnt we just buy a server last year... erm yes, that was for email, these will be for CMIS/eportal and a web server. Considering we have a budget labelled ICT infrastructure, which i'm not in charge of (moot point), i'm having to write a huge proposal to get the to consider thin clients, and replace a few servers. grrrr

Maybe i'm missing something but i've tried the APC thing, stuck in the servers (5) and a switch and they say i only need an UPS with 3.7 kW. Each one of the servers i've looked at say they have 2 power supplies, which equals 10 for the 5 servers, yet the APC recommended ones only have 8. I'm guessing that i wont really need to use both supplies, if i'm using a UPS, unless one just fails.

Hey guys. Looking at some new servers but to accompany them i'm looking at a UPS. so here goes: 2 servers x 800w power supplies = 1600w 2 servers x 700w power supplies = 1400w = 3kW So.... i'm figuring that a UPS that provides power of 3+kW will be fine? Currenty looking at This one which seems a complete bargin. Thoughts anybody?
