Lol, I had someone on today to fix my connection. It kept dropping. Couldnt log in to certain sites, kept getting session expired messages. Those darn i-mimic servers are causing more trouble that the volera ones. And i hated the Volera ones.

insight are pretty good. Especially if you can get the catalyst pricing.

Last month I got 2 DL380's 2x3GHz Dual Core, 4GB Ram, 3x 72.8GB,Raid 5, 3yr warranty for £2337; and 3 DL360s (same spec) for £1900. I swear by HP at the moment. They've got some great quality machines. Not really a fan of Dell.

... and i've just noticed they've got another free processor offer on, so you'd get 2 dual core processors. You just buy the processor and then send the invoice to HP promotions, they send you a cheque back.

By the specs the storage controller only supports Raid 0 or Raid 1. If that is the price range you are looking for i'd suggest this Server You may pay slightly more for the drives, but at least you wont have to buy the raid storage controller. How much budget you willing to spend?

hmmmm, i completely agree, resented, mis-understood, abused... all come to mind. Issues i've had over the past few weeks: 1: run in with the head bcs a senior teacher complained that the on-line ALAN testing system wasnt working properly and we should stay til the job was done, as it turns out, that teacher was working til 5:45, the edexcel documentation was incorrect, and they weren't clicking the right button. They "happened" to bump in to head, had a whinge, and all of a sudden, ICT turn in to exam invigillators because the test is done on pc's despite not a single technical issue occuring over the whole period of them being used. 2: teachers blaming missing deadlines on the fact "the system was down" - infact it was a power cut, little bit out of our control 3: teachers laptop hdd, gave up the ghost, while we waited for a piece of hardware to come in so we could run some file recovery software on the drive she moaned to the head that she couldn't hand in some minutes of a meeting because her laptop was broken. He asked us to make it a priority! 4: our backups are a retrieval for pupils stupid enough to delete their work, or give their password to somebody who does it for them; not a disaster recovery

Normally i would agree and would never order it as SoCo in this country. Maybe when i go to vegas this summer. Was just a bit of a pain to type southern comfort though!

50:1 is a bit high. Especially with no redundancy. I'd go 30:1 max or plan 20:1 then the site should still run if you loose a server. I know 50:1 is a bit high, i was only expecting it to be 30:1 to start with and then slowly phase more in, and increase servers if needed. They are both 2xIntel Xeon 3GHz Dual Core, 4GB Ram. SLT tend to make the decisions without asking though. @Dave.81 we bought HP DL380 servers and HP thin clients. SW wise we're just getting TS licenses and office licenses. The TC's will only be used for basic MS office / web browsing, maybe some maths software called headstart (anybody got experience of this over thin client?). I've explained to SLT that we may need to look at citrix or buy more servers within the first 3-4 months depending on the workload. It's so hard to judge in advance as every situation is different. I've had people suggest that 40:1 would be fine, MS whitepapers say 100:1 (or similar). I think for us its a case of suck-it and see.

lol, experimenting would have been good here. We're jumping in to it. We've bought 100 thin clients and 2 beefy servers to handle them. I'm hoping it works as expected otherwise i might be looking for another job!

So if they dont log off but close lid it works fine, it's only when they try and log-on fresh from home it screws up? Are they plugging in to a home network / got wireless on by default and connecting to an unsecured wireless network near their home? I've seen laptops / pc's / even non-DC servers take an absolute eternity to log on when a network connection is present but no domain controller is available. Even though no re-directions are set, i'm assuming that it's things like the mapping of the drives, looking for the DHCP / DNS.

Will also help with those programs that people buy without consulting the ICT dept, and require administrator priviliges on the root of the c: grrr. At least with this are no issue with kids installing stuff and it staying!

We're just about to move away from a split installation, although that being said, eportal was on a 500MHz server with 750MG Ram, and CMIS is on a DC that does DNS, DHCP, Monitoring SW and staff user areas, so not the best set-up. To be honest, I dont think that either solution is much better than the other. It all depends on the hardware. Our helpdesk have said that they've seen it work (or not) both ways.

Exchange has the facility to "archive all messages sent or recieved by mailboxes on this store" to a given mailbox. e.g. set up a user account called ex_archive and tick the box in the general tab on mailbox store properties, enter the new user. All emails will now be copied into that user. You would still have to manually check emails but you would now only have to connect to one mailbox. *NB I am not suggesting that you do this for your general use email. There would obviously be a number of privacy issues, and you should only do so after a converstation with the HT/SLT and most likely on the understanding that the email is only ever viewed under specific circumstances e.g. where a complaint is made.

I always find it funny when i get junk mail through the door, saying "change your career" earn up £25k pa with an A+ cert, upto £30k with Network +; erm yeah right! Almost signed up for CIW course a few years ago, signed contract and all. Then did some research and found out i could get same qual for about £500 by buying books and doing the exams myself instead of the £3k they quoted! Redbox, if you are a qualified teacher, i'd stick with that. The change would be difficult, not just the money but the fact you would likely to not get the full hols. £14k is about right around these parts. Depends where you are based. Dont forget that with BSF you probably wouldnt be working for the school in a year or so. If you do want to get the quals, look at A+, Network+, CCNA, MCSE, but I can only recommend doing the work yourself or at a local college. All of these training companies that make huge promises are a waste of time/space/money.
