Just my two cents: Decisions should be made with a teaching and learning focus, i.e. we cant just go out and buy something because we want to play with it, BUT just because we suggest something or are against something else doesnt mean we are trying to hinder or not considering T&L. We've had problems here with staff buying software, bringing it to us and then us telling them it wont work. Their response: "But it does everything i want and it says it works with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, and ME; surely it will work with XP" - As far as i'm concerned if a program lists the recommended machine spec processor in MHz steer well clear! All too often decisions are made without consultation with us geeks, yet its us who have to pick up the pieces, deal with the installation, expected to reduce network security because some crappy program requires all users to be administrators, or have access to the root of c; Ok, now i'll be a bit more positive, it seems to be happening less frequently. More often than not SLT will ask us to spec something up, or how can they acheive something through ICT. The main stumbling block now though is the cost. In education we recieve fantastic discounts, but most of us are given small budgets and for bigger projects we have to jump through a number of hoops, write proposals, costings, include research, etc. to push a decision through. Rather than accept our opinion people would rather make their own minds up, all well and good, but they use our research (which we could fiddle to support our argument if we wanted) to do so. I wish they would give us the time and money to do this!

Maybe they've blocked it bcs of BSF, so you cant turn round and say, why are we being forced to use and effectively pay for [insert BSF contract winners software here] when there's a perfectly good piece of open source software available which a huge support community and the versitility of being able to edit ourselves?

I think that server lasted about three weeks - we have two Dual Processor DL360's - one for CMIS and one for eportal which is a bit overkill now the problems are sorted but for a time it was the only way we could keep it running for more than a few hours without a reboot. eek. Slightly worried that my single processor DL360 wont be enough. Although at the moment CMIS is on a 3GHz single processor 2GB Ram DC running DNS. DHCP, Network monitoring sw, staff user areas, staff shared drivel etc..... eportal is on a 900 MHz 750MB Ram "server" ( - sarcasm intended). Hopefully the step up will be noticable (and appreciated)

lol, you still using the LA issue compaq for eportal? we are. Seriously considering upgrading to a HP DL360 3GHz Dual Core, 4GB Ram to host CMIS and eportal. Has a spare slot for another processor if it starts to show strain.

@all Ok this has kinda popped up here but you mind listing (in your opinion) pro's and cons of single or seperate installations please. Single: Pros: Quicker upgrades Less network traffic Runs faster Cons: Greater strain on server Memory leaks Problems with ePortal could affect CMIS usage Seperate: Pros: Can use a lower spec machine Can restart eportal server without any affect of CMIS Cons: Slower Network overheads / traffic Slower upgrades

Charcoal! Gas is cheating. We bought a BEAST of a BBQ last year http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3454787.htm and had an amazing world cup party. Invited about 40 people round, put a screen and LCD projector (perks of working in the IT dept) in the garden underneath a gazebo to keep the sun off. Luckily for that party England won, everybody got drunk and ate loads. Did the same for England v Portugal and strangely enought nobody really felt like eating or drinking. Will most likely do the same next year for the Euros if we qualify!

Hi, I've been looking at Sharepoint, i've managed to set it up correctly (i think) and insert some exchange webparts in the "mysite" part. However, i keep having to enter my exchange username and password. Looked at single sign on but that seems more for writing your own webparts. Any ideas?

I would have added that while the Internet may be "free" i.e. no one person / entity owns it, the damn internet connection she is trying to access it on is owned by the school. You gratiously give her "free" access, on the proviso that you control what comes in and out of the school via said connection. If she would like to contact BT, Virgin, etc. and pay for the installation of a dedicated line for herself to be accessed using her own computer she is more than welcome. Students. cant reason with 'em, hands-off policy says ya cant trottle 'em.

I would suggest also asking the parents if their child has a mobile phone, and can they prove that said illness isn't from holding their mobile within close proximity to their ear or from having it about their personage at all times. Let 'em dig theirself out of that one! It would have been more cost effective to ask her to take half a step left or right when addressing the glass. How daft was she: teacher: "class take a look at this..." pupils: "we cant miss theres f*cking shadow in the way" teacher: "hmmm, must be something inside the projector, let me look inside.... arrrrh" :twisted: Or could you not have just issued all staff with sunglasses? The thing that put me off was that literally within 5 mins of logging in and looking at their pricing i got a phone call asking if i wanted to place an order, was there anything they could do for me etc. I have to say i find the daily emails a bit annoying too. Maybe it's just me, but the companies i use regularly arent the ones who call me on a daily basis.

Also consider HP Procurves. Bit more pricy but i believe they come with a lifetime warrenty.

We've got a shed-load (thats not where we keep them tho) of the 2600's. Not got any major problems with them, except one keeps thinking the toner isnt HP original but thats not too bad. They're quite decent printer in our experience. Although they do get through toners like nobodys business. Although i suspect that is down to being abused, which is a whole other matter that is being monitored seperately.

I'd give them a call and ask if they made a typo. £8k to install a 1.6k server? c'mon. Tell you what, i'll do it for 1k plus expenses. £800 would be acceptable, you could save money if you did it yourself, but it may be worth the cost to take the stress off your hands. If you sit and watch them, see what they do then you'd be more confident next time. Or if you feel confident and the school has faith in you go for it. Do it yourself. Word of caution though, i would buy the server. Not the components. Takes the hassel out of it if anything dies.
