That may be the case, but over time desktops and laptops will degrade in performance and stop meeting needs. Eventually they will need replacing, paying the same price no doubt. Paying for decent thin clients, you'll get years out of them as its only usually the back end infrastructure that's ever upgraded. I still have some Wyse C10LEs connected to Windows 10 VMs with RemoteFX enabled and they perform exactly as would a brand new thin client. The council for example, have 2008R2 Citrix servers with ancient grey thin clients connected and they're still bomb proof. With Dell, personally I think you're paying for quality and, like with most other thin clients, long shelf lives.

If you know what the local printers are called, I.e. "Fax" and "Send to OneNote", in GPP do the same, but instead of shared printer choose new local printer. Again set it to delete and type the printer name to remove.

I am using Group Policy Preferences to manage printer deployment. How are you doing it? Do you have much knowledge of GPP? In the printers GPO you have, go to: User Configuration -> Preferences -> Control Panel Settings -> Printers Right click and choose "New Network Printer". Change the type to "Delete" and it will give you the option to delete all shared printers: If you have multiple rules to add printers, make sure the new rule is set to first in the order, otherwise it will add them then delete them.

I Haven't rolled it out yet but as with Win10, I'm currently offering it to people who want it. So it's not really in mainstream use yet. Let them suffer when things go wrong before anybody else!!

The thing to watch out for with hotspots that's even if you have unlimited data, hotspots are still capped (WiMAX, Phone, 4G modem etc.). Somehow it detects it's a hotspot and I believe is in place to 'stop' people using t to replace their home broadband.

Hey. Just something I stumbled across. I know Office 2016 isn't supported by SIMS yet, but unlike when 2013 wasn't - it has a few bugs. When you run some reports that export to Word, they freeze SIMS with 'Unknown Error' - then kick you out. We had an ICT teacher excited about 2016 but then found he can't do any reports!

How many users do you have accessing it at once just out of interest? Cheers.

What happens if you use Group Policy Preferences to create the folder at first login: User Config->Preferences->Windows Settings->Folders Call it something like "N:\Downloads" and choose 'Create' as the action so it doesn't keep trying every time you log in.

It took them long enough to support Office 2013 and Windows 8(8.1)

I've noticed it does not work with Word-based SIMS reports, throwing an unhandled exception and crashing SIMS.

I had a similar issue running SQL 2014 with SIMS consuming all available memory, 16,24,even32Gb. Running the DB in 2008 compatibility mode reduced this problem and is now only taking about 6-10Gb with 16 allocated to the VM. I'm not sure about 2012 if it's a similar problem, but you can try and give it a go.

Now I've got Office 2016 RemoteApps setup on a pool of Win10 VMs via RDS. It is so much quicker than 2013 (as appears to be Win10) - finally something that's right. Just need my KMS key to stop them whinging about activation.

Thing is, today drags and I bet the download takes forever and drags due to the amount of people hammering MS's servers. I've got the pro 90 day trial on, but of course it won't accept the product key being a different type. Come on MS

I've found it pretty much the same to be honest. It does seem a lot quicker, but I find Win10 is a lot quicker on the same hardware as 8.1 - hence why virtual desktops are probably quicker. I just wish the on the RDWeb login page they'd change it from "Windows Server 2012R2" (it's just the old one) I find Office 2016 a bit faster than 2013, so it's just the final piece of the jigsaw. I'm trying it out virtually as opposed to rolling it out across the whole site - which will probably be the beginning of 2016. It's like waiting for XMas - COME ON MICROSOFT! Paul.

Sad aren't we Playing around with Server TP3 and Win10 VDI. All I need to finish off is Office installed on the guest and I'll have a working setup. Tension.

Has anybody noticed some weird things about Win10 Education. I've installed it on a few machines using the ISO from the VLSC. During setup then choosing to join it to a domain later. When it finished setting up, I added software etc. Then I noticed the task manager was disabled, plus the ctrl+alt+del security screen had nothing on it, not even the option to log out. Both of these had to be enabled via gpedit on the local machine. I think it's a bit odd as its every install. Is it a built in design limitation 'forcing' people to join it to a domain to allow it to work as it should? I thought it was available for student devices at home, but the only two real setup options are to join an Azure Domain or a normal Windows domain 'later'. I don't have an Azure domain and I'm not giving every student a DC to take home :-) Paul.

I'll give creating a new one another go. I just don't understand why it would happen. As the rest of GPPs are XML files, you'd think others would have the same / similar problem. Stuff just randomly disappearing from what is basically a text file is crazy. Cheers everyone.

Each of the 3 DCs has it's own copy of the SYSVOL etc.. Replication etc. is working properly too. These are GPPs - which are saved as XML files and not .pol files which use the .adm / .admx templates. Thanks, Paul.
