2 in 1 flip style Chromebook + management license = £228. An iPad is more than that on its own (last price I got for a 2018 iPad 9.7 32GB was £250). Add a case and MDM and the price is considerably more. For a device with no keyboard but does have a touchscreen and can run tablet apps etc...

Except, it hasn't has it? All the arguments I've seen to counter it have been weak or just not sensible. I'll put it simply - children are required to type up work. A physical keyboard with proper haptic feedback is better for fine motor control development than tapping a touchscreen which doesn't give accurate haptic feedback.

Just to put this out there - the i3-2100 gets around 3700 Passmark CPU score, vs 8000 ish for the i3-8100. So, realistically its only about double the speed. I only just upgraded my personal i5-2550k in the last month, and that was capable of playing any modern game I threw at it. So, I would say that a 2nd gen i3 is still perfectly capable for general office type use. We are still using third gen devices all across the Trust without issue.

Yup. This is how we did it too - we've got a good 150 devices with SSD's held in place with velcro. No moving parts, nothing to go wrong.

My audio comment - the whole "camera picking up the speakers" set up for sound makes the sound super unclear for anyone with hearing issues. Hearing loss isn't about volume really, its about clarity. Most hearing loss is loss of higher end or middle range frequencies, so when you have that sort of sound setup, the bass and echo basically end up drowning out the rest of the sound. I ended up giving up watching as I just couldn't make out what was being said, sorry. If the audio has a direct feed from the mic, it allows the listener to adjust it their end to get rid of stuff that prevents them understanding. For example - I have a equaliser on my PC which allows me to turn bass down and certain mid frequencies up. Glad everyone had a good time there though!

I'd work up the different OSI layers. Check lower layers - Any lights on the NIC or the switch for those machines? Can your switch see the PC connected to the port by its MAC address? In your DHCP server and DNS server, are there records for the old machines? Have you tried removing those records, and restarting the PCs so new ones appear?

Wait, what? I thought the whole point of federated IDs was that you as an enterprise were confirming that people under the age of 13 had permission - it even says something about people under 13 having to be federated IDs on their site!

I'm confused, that doesn't seem to be true at all? SDL works fine with Adobe 2019 - indeed that's why they built the new system - as the old device based licenses didn't work with 2019. SDL has only been out a couple of months, superceding the old device licenses. I've just built an SDL package to install, so will see what it installs now.

There definitely is a shared license scheme - we have 25 licenses under it.

At the scale of 1 or 2 schools, I would probably agree, but once you start scaling to lots of schools, it becomes far more attractive.

All current model Chromebooks are USB C as they can't be certified as a Chromebook by Google without it. Basically, Google give the base design spec for the machines, and each manufacturer develop their own version - but there are a bunch of things they can't change. Personally, I like that they use USB C chargers. MUCH easier to source replacements. The USB C connector is a well designed connector tested to withstand 10s of thousands of uses - if your connectors are falling apart that quickly, then I think the make of device you're buying may be using poor components.

The haulage industry jump at every possible opportunity to save money through efficiencies. Its why you see so few "old" lorries around for most of the big companies - the reduction in fuel consumption of new models far outweighs the cost of the vehicles themselves. Its why the industry is so interested in electric lorries and self drive lorries etc...

Every little helps. Also, the efficiency of a ICE is far lower than even our worst coal power plant. So, the emissions are lower from electricity generation than burning petrol/diesel. The attitude of "other things are worse" is not a great way forward - we all need to make changes as it has a knock on effect. All of those things are moving to cleaner technologies. Lorry makers are working on electric models. "Black Cabs" in London have much more stringent requirements now, with the move to electric happening. Why not both? Air travel is disastrous to the planet, absolutely. Which is why so many people are against the new runway for Heathrow. What's fairer than "it affects everyone, so everyone has to change"?

I'd prefer to have the originating issue resolved rather than bypassing it. If Google have detected dodgy activity coming from the CPOMS servers, I want to know what it is before advising staff to bypass such warnings.

So my thought on that would be that maybe we as a species need to stop and think about our actions - sometimes those spur of the moment things aren't exactly great for the planet. If we are to survive the climate emergency, we all need to start reigning our world damaging habits in a bit. Also, there are close to 20,000 charging points around the UK now - for many "spur of the moment" trips, you'll still be going near charging points.

Why does a section about safe communication with children have any comment on staff owned devices having 3g/4g on them? One thing is for sure - it is not supposed to be used wholesale, without consideration to your school's operation. If we were to look at that, we would write our own policy based on it, and the 3g/4g part would be removed. We have a "all personal phones must be handed in" at nurseries, but at schools this isn't policy as it is unrealistic.

Where is that document from? Only I cannot find a 2019 version of it anywhere - only a 2015 version. It is also a "guidance" document, and not statutory. We couldn't adopt it here, for example, as we use phones as part of our jobs...

May I ask how often you go on these long journeys? Only, with the majority of people, long journeys are an exception rather than the norm. Leading to people to buy a car for the "occasional" rather than what they do every day. Whereas, you could rent a vehicle for those occasional long trips, for example. A 2 week rental on something like an Insignia is about £250. Of course, if you're going on these long trips every week, then that's a different matter, but if you're doing it only a couple of times a year then you may be shooting yourself in the foot.

This isn't a thread about why I'd do this, or other suppliers, it is purely a technical question - is it technically possible. My job is to plan for all reasonable possibilities, and us still being on the legacy SIMS system is a reasonable possibility in 2 years time when we're intending to get rid of all on-site servers.
