  1. As per post below, to gauge opinion I have created a poll which I would appreciate your feedback. 1. Get the CAT6 network done throughout the house. 2. Wifi is the way forward - CAT6 will have a limited lifespan which will make the kit redundant over time. 3. Use powerline adapters around the place. 4. I couldn't care less for your first world problems.
  2. Will be looking at 12-14 ports throughout the house. Would be for at the moment 1x Workhorse PC, 1x HTPC in living room, 1x Tivo Box, 1x PS3, 1xPS4 adding a couple of PoE IP Cams at front and back doors. I'm feeling 6 of one and half a dozen of the other in doing this - looks like a 50/50 split on here so far too lol.
  3. Morning, I am just getting the final details sorted out on my home renovation and I have been quoted for a complete rewire of the house including having a 10u home network cab with CAT6 cabling around the house. Before I make the commitment to the data part of the work, I was wondering what your opinions are on getting this done. The reason being I will be putting a real wood floor down throughout and if things go wrong I do not wish to have to lift flooring to get to cables etc. I am also looking at the current generation of homeplugs which run at a theoretical 1200mpbs. If you were going through a renovation would network points be something you would consider and if not, why not? I might be able to save myself somewhere in the region of 40% of my sparks cost if the consensus is forget it.. All comments and ideas welcome
  4. Thanks I was thinking of powered hub, but was wondering if it could also be driver related?
  5. Morning, Looking for the best solution to a sporadic problem, our Hitachi DUO FX boards keep reporting that there is insufficient bandwidth, these boards plug straight into the USB sockets in the classroom PCs there are no extenders or other cabling involved. Has anyone else had this issue and what did you purchase to boost the USB signal?
  6. Try Kelway?
  7. Yes I work for one, one of the leading girls grammar school in the country. Great place to work. I was actually bricking it when I secured an interview as I was expecting it to be all mortar boards and capes. You could never meet a nicer bunch of staff and the girls, well it makes it a lot easier when they have no interest in opening machines to nick the RAM or proxy avoidance techniques....
  8. These videos just validate what an immature, angry and tragic society we live in today. Even the on line point scoring between the two camps (motorists and cyclists) as to who is right/wrong getting their blood pressure raised beggars belief *sighs*
  9. Ibasso or Cowon devices are worth a look at.
  10. All VMs here so scheduled task restart from 6am every Friday - FRDC 6am RDC 6:10am Members 6:15am and 6:20am etc...
  11. Intake 2015, Intake 2016 etc is the easiest way to manage users in my opinion - the only "headache" is that for us when new sixth formers arrive from other schools to remember to add them into the intake that they would have been if they had started her in year 7.
  12. Hello from someone who spent the first half of their life growing up in Edinburgh too. Just returned from two weeks staying at my parents in Croft-an-righ
  13. First two weeks off - wee trip up to my home town of Edinburgh. Then back to the grind.
  14. Never used remote assistance but we used remote desktop connection mstsc.exe to connect to machines. The problem is it I have never managed to get VNC to work or deploy around the school (RM CC4 estate). I know that teamviewer works out the box and I did get a quote back in 2012 for V7. I can justify this spend if it helps us do our job more effectively.
  15. Morning, We are losing a technician over the summer who is moving on to bigger and better things and sadly we will not be replacing him due to budget cuts. For personal use, I love team viewer for remote desktoping as I have used it for years and as my team has shrunk I believe that this would be the most convenient application for us to use in the school to keep us efficient. Just wondered who is currently using it in a school environment and how you configured it to lock it down to stop pupils accessing it or connecting and sending chat messages etc? Thanks in advance!
  16. Thank you my friends, makes it all a bit clearer now
  17. I am at a stage now where I am going to get my complete house rewired. Looking at having LED lights throughout the house, but baffled as to how many I need per room and what brightness and its equivalent to oldskool bulbs. Has anyone else gone down this route and just wondered how you worked out how many you need for dimensions of room, plus what brightness you chose? Andy T
  18. I am slowly losing love with technology, it doesn't excite me anymore. I plan to get rid of my mobile completely at the end of the contract, I am not interested in television so the ancient Samsung 720i will possibly replaced with a monitor only. Also looking at non tech jobs so I can get back to interacting with humans again.
  19. We went live with inventry about 4 months ago - wish this thread was around before that
  20. You are quite right - VM Superhub V2 I think - sorry lack of caffeine caused me to do that.
  21. Morning all, I am trying to enable MAC filtering on my son's devices, however it seems to be acting in a binary manor - even though I have set time schedules of 20:30 to 06:00 weekdays. I can turn it off, but when I add time schedules it just blocks regardless *sighs*. Has anyone else noticed this?
  22. Cool - just awaiting the nod from our reseller on this - might have to come in over a weekend and update the MFDs which I presume I can do from a USB stick with the .pkg file on?
  23. Steve did your reseller say the upgrade on the MFDs was also needed or recommended?
  24. Sorry if this isn't the forum to ask, but just wondered how easy it is to upgrade papercut to a newer version, we haven't touched ours since install V13.4 and was wondering if it is just backing up the database installing the new version over the top and re-importing again. Are there any considerations to take into account? Ours is running on a VM so we could create a snapshot to revert back to if it didn't go to plan..
  25. Never tried creative cloud but my technician managed to cobble together a CC4 package for CS5. I'm sure that we had the error 16 which was resolved by running the app as admin, closing the app and then allowing students to log in. I would also create a smart list on CC4 to highlight how many stations that it is installed on as we had realised that we accidently had allowed the packed to be inherited from other locations, thus putting us well over the 250 licences.
