Thanks for the reply. We already have printer limits in place, so that's not an issue. We usually split the classroom up so that half the machines print to one printer, etc. We have two printers earmarked for the room, so I think I'll put them both in there. All I need now is the time....

We have an ICT suite with 30 machines. We're possibly going to be replacing the two laser printers within that class with a single new one. The old ones are rated at 17 and 21 ppm, with the new one being 28ppm. I'm simply curious to know what other schools use to handle their printing demands. Cheers.

Virtualisation (or platform virtualisation in your meaning, I'm assuming) is where you can run multiple virtual systems on one physical system. For example, on one physical server you could have your file server, print server, dns and dhcp servers all operating concurrently. The advantage are a reduction in hardware and power costs. Plus, once the virtual systems are configured they're basically just virtual hard drive and configuration files. This means that you could store a copy and if one physical server went down, it's easy enough to transfer them to another.

We need to order a bunch of new ones. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which? They need to be cheap, optical and usb. Also, we have a number of children who are partial to ripping the buttons upwards, so a model where it will be difficult to get the fingers underneath the buttons would be a godsend. Cheers all.

I'm going to echo the statements about buying 'nearly new'. I bought a colt last year, and whereas the brand new model would go for £11K, I got my 18 month old for £7K with 18 months left on the warranty.

The properties of the twisting also guard against a surprising level of outside interference. Granted, I'm not saying that running UTP outside is a good idea, just that it's possible.

In my last job, a school had a cat5 cable suspended between two buildings, naked to the elements. As far as I'm aware, it's been working without issue for quite a few years. Don't worry too much about insulating the cables using armoured CAT5. There's a reason why the wires are twisted

Yes it does. One of the previous updates added the feature. This project is moving rapidly as they're releasing updates once a month.

My GF has the same. Excellent quality as you'd expect from SE. My next purchase will be either the SE g900i, or Samsung i900. Both are touch screen, the former a Symbian and the latter Windows Mobile 6. The reason I want one or the other is Tomtom and Slingbox compatibility.

I'd cycle to work if it was practical. It's an eight mile journey, which in itself isn't that far by bike. The trouble is there's a pretty substantial hill between me and the school, with the road being not that wide. Then you have to account for cars racing along at 60mph as well as poor visibility some of the time. It's safer and more practical to use the car, unfortunately

We'll be moving on to TFT screens in our next purchasing cycle. Combined with some thin clients, ICT suites will be a lot cooler, easier to maintain and cheaper to run. Things are looking up.

My sister has a Creative Zen 4GB on my recommendation and she loves it. Plays XviD, too. The Clix (Gen. 2) is a very nice player, and I have one. Trouble is, the USB connection on it has packed up just after the one year warranty has ended. It's a common enough fault that I don't think I could recommend one again. I doubt you'd find a linux-based NAS that would handle NTFS, even though Linux has been able to handle the file system for a while now. Why not go for a USB dock and a few high-capacity drives (3.5" or 2.5" for that matter). Plug in one each day and perform an incremental backup. It would be like using tapes, but it would store more and you'd have multiple redundancy. When the drives are not being used, there are plenty of cases available to keep them safe. I've tried Admin, Administrator, admin, administrator, root, email address etc. Nothing will let me log in to the admin section. I'm using the admin password that I supplied on installation, and the software's running on WAMP server 1.7. The only thing that I didn't fill in was the ftp section, because I don't have an ftp server set up yet. After checking the joomla database (jos_users) there's an 'admin' entry, with the password field completed. TIA EDIT: Never mind, helps to read the bloody pdf. My excuse is a lack of sleep. So there.

A hardware failure in all four servers can only be explained by a power surge due to a lack of UPS. I can't see this being the case though, so it's most likely the whole domain is botched, with whatever controlling third-party software being unable to access it.

It would be interesting to see comparison prices for various courses, such as Zimbra versus Exchange etc. Has anyone completed a linux-oriented course?
